I wish I knew what this Harriet died from. I have Harriet Gillett’s death certificate but dying before Queen Victoria came to the throne, all those men in charge, no one thought of practical sociological issues. Sure there was a long-time War on and statistics were beginning to be thought of in a way relevant to its needs but I think men are slower to see the human connections and needs than women are. Harriet and I could probably have a meaningful conversation whereas my brothers and hers would have a hard time of it, despite all the men being well travelled, ship- and war-knowledgeable.

A round, furry body with feathery red antennae, the heavy moth struggled around Anna's fingers. Unbalanced and awkward, the one bent wing kept it from flying away.
Later Anna awakened from her sleep, afraid of being alone in the dark. She slipped down the hallway, one arm flapping uselessly in the dark; a creature of disaster, alone and needy.

Sorry it's not just one sentence.

I’m having a hard time here because I want to add comments to everyone’s posts. Some of them made me laugh. Some peaked my interest (is that the right word?). Some have sent me off with a plot bunny. But, if I comment on every sentence(s), I won’t get my own writing done. So, please forgive me for just saying to everyone all at once “please keep the sentences coming.”

Happy Writing

Here's my sentences from yesterday:
The server was a twenty-something woman with neon pink stripes in her bleached blond hair and skin that looked like it had never seen a beam of sunlight. “You ready here?” Her name tag said Sunshine.

And today:
The only thing in the fridge was light. The freezer didn’t even have the light. Least they could have done was leave me a six pack.

Gently and with purpose the fungus haunted the shadows of Anna’s mind, signaling and directing its purpose behind the curtains of her needs and desires. Wet footsteps left patterns in the hallways of her awareness as smiling eyes peered through coquettish tendrils of thought.

"People always assume that Mac is a nickname — well it is, I suppose, but not what they expect. Mac is short for Macintosh, my brother Burnie’s full name is Braeburn, my sister Gale is actually Gala, and my brother Cortland - well that one’s self explanatory. Yes, my mother had a thing for apples."

Have a few I want to share. Keep in mind that they are from different parts of the story. It's NOT a continuous dialogue.

* Chase thought that Missy was in good shape for 102. She didn’t look a day over … 85.

* As soon as Missy hung up the phone she sprang – well, it was more like shuffled – into action.

* Checking in once every half hour was dreadfully boring. The locators sometimes would seek after frivolous things during the sweep without telling anyone. The ones who flew over the South Pacific couldn’t resist looking for Amelia Earhart. If they found her, they kept mum.

* Spirits can come and go and they please, but they don’t drag chains or wear bells around their necks. If Brooke returns later, there would be no way for her to let me know that she is here.

Don’t forget hygiene is important, clean is supreme, and most importantly, we both get equally fined if the bed inspectors find you have a dirty bed.”

It’s not necessarily my best, or even second best, but my current favorite sentence is:

Your manner is crude, your clothing is common and your shoes, sir, are dirty.

In context it is an appropriate response to an a$$.

I think one of the sentences below will be the best I wrote today:

The (video) images of her sixteen year old son being physically attacked by that young man, and then fighting against six others as they stripped him naked, took over everything in her world. Nothing entered the realm of her senses except the sights and sounds of Vic struggling, and fighting, and losing much more than his underwear. Tears splashed unheeded into her coffee cup, clutched numbly with both hands.

The worst image of all was her Vic, her baby boy, cowering, ashamed, his bare bottom exposed to the world as kids stood around and laughed, called him filthy names, and recorded what they were doing to him. That vision etched itself like acid in Paula's brain and would stay with her until the moment she died.

Super cheating, I'm posting an entire paragraph.

"The good, pleasant, cheerful, and sunny events in life are easy to describe but the pains and the hurts, the terrible losses life hands us, are almost indescribable. Unless one has endured them how can they be understood? And even once one has endured them, how could they be imagined? There seems to be some uniformity in the joys of life, they make each of us feel good in similar ways. Even if we can’t define love, most of us recognize love when it knocks us sideways. But the sorrows are another story altogether, each of suffers alone and differently."

OK today's best single sentence, hope no one will be offended:

"That was the unfortunate moment that Ben peaked out from behind me, pointed at Richard’s goatee, and whispered, “Nookie beard”, in the loud manner which small children always seem to use at just such inopportune moments."

Adam sighed heavily as he flicked through Max’s sketches. There was one with a silhouette of a man wearing a hat and billowing cape, which he took to be Max’s signature; and another of a rabbit with long floppy ears, which was signed Love from Flopsy.

He wondered how he was going to tell Guy that Laura had decided that she was having fun in 1913 and was now out of reach.

Ok,that's 3 sentences, but I haven't posted any for a while, and these were my last three. And I'm validated!

“Mom, Dad,” she said after they’d gotten home from the funeral, “I have to tell you something.” With those words she started the longest story of her life. By the time she was finished several hours later, three things had happened: her mother had called a therapist; her father had called the police; and both of them had insisted they go see Vic’s parents. She didn’t know whether she felt better, or worse, but at least she felt free.

Thank you for the kind encouragement! NaNo has been an amazing first-time experience for me. The character who uttered those lines above didn't even exist two weeks ago, and now I have him and all these other minor characters pushing their way to the front.

There are several characters in the story with that sixth-sense locating ability, but the character I've quoted above isn't one of them. He was hired to answer the phone, amongst other tasks. His name is Dzislaw “Suave” Pujanski. That impossible Polish first name is pronounced something like “G-suave,” so everyone just calls him “Suave.” I got the name from my 23-y-o son, Nick, who spent two years in Poland. Nick told me that he likes the name Dzislaw and wants to name a son Dzislaw. Once I knew that I just had to name a character Dzislaw.

Congrats! You've written 50,000 in two weeks, how hard can it be to write another 15,000 in two weeks?

I said my story is "finished" but I meant that loosely. I have a beginning, middle, and end, but there are places in the story that need more fleshing out and characters who want their own chapters. With hitting 50,000 I've kinda lost my motivation for the moment. I'm taking today off. I have no idea how many words it would take to finish it. It could be 100,000 words by the time I'm really done. My son is already askiing me if I'm going to write a trilogy and I haven't finished the first story yet! I think my next book will start with a father strangling his annoying son.

Just what every serial killer needs -- an enabler! Reminds me of that exchange in "Princess Bride" between Count Rugen and Prince Humperdinck:

Count Rugen: Ah. Are you coming down into the pit? Wesley's got his strength back. I'm starting him on the machine tonight.

Prince Humperdinck: [sincerely] Tyrone, you know how much I love watching you work, but I've got my country's 500th anniversary to plan, my wedding to arrange, my wife to murder and Guilder to frame for it; I'm swamped.

Count Rugen: Get some rest. If you haven't got your health, then you haven't got anything.

Well, yes, Kaz, thanks! I am hoping to reproduce the unimaginable nightmare of being a bullied gay teen.

I'm writing from alternating perspectives. The bullied boy; bully 1; bully 2; the teacher; the girl friend who tries to beard him; the horrified mother; the bitterly betrayed father; the principal who is unwilling to do anything about it - and I'm sure new characters will enter as we wind our way to the final/opening scene. In the end, someone is going to kill someone else because they just can't stand the emotional pain any longer.

I'm half way there, but I still don't know yet who is holding the knife on whom.

Re: What is the best sentence you wrote today?

Kazbert - isn't it the truth? I had to spend yesterday rewriting three chapters because I'd had the wrong one do something important. Well, the names kept getting mixed up, the story sequence wasn't flowing and then it suddenly became clear. The wrong character had made a significant change in the story. And they weren't going to cooperate until I got it fixed.

I love the idea that you have a woman character who's pretended to be a man for five long years, She must be very good at it to have gone undetected for five years. I don't know if she'd really believe men don't cry, however. I think a woman who'd been living among men as a man for five years would know good and well that men cry - just wouldn't take the chance of losing self control for even a minute herself.

When you're living disguised (real life experience speaking here) you take no chances at detection. None at all. For her sake, I hope she's hidden far, far away from everyone before she let's loose.

Her life had a tragic start (saw her twin sister executed by ignorant people) and a tragic end (husband and five sons die at sea -- all on the same ship -- many years later), but there were a lot of good times in the middle. Her disguise was mostly her choice. It was Eastern Europe in 1840 and she wanted to travel (get away from the ones who killed her sister). She was only 18 when she set out and figured traveling as a man would mean fewer hassles and fewer dangers for her. She was good at it, but one of her methods was risky -- cut weight to intentionally induce amenorrhea.

She ended up marrying a male traveling companion five years later. That's the reason for the tears. He rejected her at first, but not for pretending to be a man. He was surprised but took it well. It was something else that freaked him out. But he soon came back.

As for men not crying (refusing to), it depends on the culture -- the time and place. Even in modern America there are harsh neighborhoods where a young man crying equates to hanging a sign around his neck that says "easy victim." I grew up in such a neighborhood. You learn fast seeing what happens to others not to draw attention to yourself.

Great paragraph, Ruta! Very thought-provoking.

I agree that there are many things you have to experience first hand in order to understand them. The words alone are inadequate -- unless the reader/listener has had a similar experience. Then even the most inadequate words are filled with nuance and meaning.

I don’t quite agree about writing about good experiences being easy. There are levels of joy that also evade adequate description unless the other person has had a similar experience. Joy and sorrow are also tied together. Our ability to experience a present joy depends on our past sorrows. Experiencing the depths of pure sorrow opens the way for us to experience the heights of pure joy.

See all the thoughts you provoked?

Sometimes cliche is appropriate to use. Just my amateur writer gut response, but I think a cliche might fly better in a dialogue than in a narrative, even if the character is just talking aloud to him/her self. Then it's the character who is being cliched, not the author.

He took a swig of beer, then held the bottle up to the light. As he watched the swirling liquid inside, he said, " Beer. That divine gift from God to all mankind. Amen."

I want to edit so much! I just want to get in there and tear the whole thing apart and make it better, but I know that if I stop to edit, I won't finish the tale.

I had to cut my internal editor loose last night for a couple of hours because my chronology needed some quick fine tuning to keep to make sure the beginning and the end tie together well. That's mostly because I didn't write the chapters sequentially. I had an outline, and I tended to write first the chapters that I thought sounded like the most fun.

Now that my characters know they can tie up and gag the internal editor I'm not having too much trouble keeping him in line. I have a bad memory, so sometimes the internal editor threatens to have an anxiety attack. I usually just jot a short note to myself [in brackets] and keep writing. Later I can do a search for "[" and make sure I've addressed all the notes. That assurance that I won't forget anything is usually enough to quiet him down.

Wow. I'm an engineer who has rasied three kids (now all in college) and I never caught that particlular flaw in the story. Then again, I don't recall ever reading them that story so maybe that's how I overlooked it.

Hey you two make me smile. Who would have thought anyone would be discussing the three little bears on the 50 forum.

It made me think of what the Queen said to Alice -
"Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”

Kaz, one of my nephews pointed that out to me. The scientifically-oriented child was about 3 at the time.

Oh little Moonie, the Queen also said "Off with her head" in reference to Alice and she said it in a bored voice.

Must be one of the younger characters, Intrikate. Who of geezer status can remain calm when Nature calls? Most of us need to answer the call quickly or get very nervous.

Well, this one is. I think I'll make it part of a series. A series which I might even start today...can I still update my word count, even if it's turned purple? and will updating it turn it back to blue? I just LURVE purple!

You can update the number and it stays purple. Unless you by mistake put in a number that is less than 50000.
