Anyone else have a kid who's...

... beating the pants off their word count?

I'm so far behind my daughter at this point that I'm sending her NaNo mails trying to make her do other things, like eat, sleep, study, play computer games...

You get the idea. Anyhow, just wondering if anyone else out there makes NaNo an annual family trip to la-la-land...

Re: Anyone else have a kid who's...

To put it succinctly: Yes.

Daughter currently has almost twice as many words as I do. She won't be 16 till December. She has been doing the full program since just before she turned 13 and she always aces it. Last year she committed herself to write two separate 50K novels during November and she did it. It IS somewhat intimidating!

But she's balanced out by her brother (just turned 14) who finally set a YWP word count for himself of 5K and is struggling (mostly complaining) to achieve it. He has done NNWM for--well, this is the third year running. Not because he loves to write, but because he claims he feels left out hearing us fuss over our novels during November.

I have to remind myself that I'm running the home and taking care of a husband and two kids and also a part-time business with unpredictable time commitments, and oh yeah, BTW writing a novel too. On the other hand, daughter (homeschooled) has an unusually heavy load of schoolwork this year so maybe that balances out too.

I love the idea of sending NaNoMail to goad your kids into doing their other responsibilities! I think I will try it!

Re: Anyone else have a kid who's...

Not really.

I do have a son that I never expected to do NaNoWriMo. In word wars he tends to hit the 250 range for fifteen minutes, typing, while I hit an unadjusted count of 330 or more, hand writing. I'm a little surprised that he has reached 30K today. I'll be hitting 40K or higher later today.

We're trying to convince my daughter to join in. She has been working on a series of fantasy stories involving centaurs, one of my favorite topics.

I'd be really surprised if my youngest son or my wife tried NaNoWriMo. But it might happen.

This year, for the first time, my homeschooled, 18-year-old daughter was ahead of me for the first 13 days. I'm finally back ahead of her, me being the intimidating one who tends to write 120,000 words in November.

I do have a handicap this year: I have breast cancer, and even doing the gentler alternative treatments I'm doing saps my strength and steals my brain. Being away from home for treatment, then accidentally fracturing my hip, too, didn't help. My daughter has told me repeatedly that it's good for me to be behind (which I was until yesterday), so I guess it's my turn to feel a little inadequate.

I love hearing other whose kids are doing this, too. We sometimes feel a little strange going to local write-ins (when we're at home) as a mother-daughter "team". Go kids!

Kudos to you for keeping with the program in spite of your health. I've been dealing with lower back pain this year, which makes sitting for long periods of time harder, but it's nothing compared with what you're going through.

The kid and I haven't been to any write-ins together, though we had one at my place near the beginning of the month. I type faster than she does, but she's got a better handle on her story, I think. I'm trying to produce the bare bones of something that might eventually be worth publishing, so I'm not adding in as many dares as I did the year I won.

But I'm pleased that I've managed to write every single day so far, which is something I've never before managed to acheive. Even if I don't hit 50k by the end of November (and I'm still not so far off that I can't see this happening), as long as I wrote every day, and continue writing every day, I'll be happy, because I know that I'll finish someday.

My daughter started doing NaNo in 2002 and did it every year through 2008. She skipped 2009, did 2010 and started this year (although she didn't update her profile at all after the move). She has put it on hold this year while she fills out graduate school applications, and intends to do her 50K whenever those are done.

She once did the 50K in less than three weeks while in college (bio major), I think it was her third year.

When she is cranking I don't even think about keeping up!

My daughter is ahead of me but I've been catching up! This is mostly because she is at school and doesn't have the same amount of time as I do. Once she is on a roll the words just flow out of her in a way that I simply can't match. The courage of the young I guess!

She is also much more methodical then I am. She has recently completed another (not her first) novel and she won't let me even look at it until she has finished the third draft.

I don't actually try to compete - I just stand back admiringly!

I crossed the 50K line a day or so before he did.

When he crossed the line, it was by about 50 or so words. I was going to suggest that he boost his numbers just in case the verification word count was low.

Instead, when I checked his numbers, I found that he was up to 54K while I'm at 58K. The race is on!

No, I just hand write fairly fast and he types fairly slow.

My hand writing speed is at about the right rate for the Inner Editor to tweak things.

I have, when the words are flowing, written roughly six hundred words in forty minutes. A 'good' speed is six hundred words in fifty minutes. A 'normal' speed is the same count in an hour. Anything slower is disappointing.
