A gastric flu outbreak is hitting UK , and I am laid low. Not like me not to struggle to my keyboard, but for the first time since I entered nanowrimo in 2005, I'll have to wear a badge saying "loser" rather than my usual "winner". And that hurts just as much as my symptoms! Always another year...
Good luck, everyone. And if in the UK, wash your hands/ wear a mask unti 30th Novl!
Hey Fiona, here's hoping you feel much better very quickly!
Maybe you'll improve quickly, and then finish in a feverish (sorry) last-minute whirl. You've proven you can do it, already, so all you need is a bit of luck. Here you go -- good luck!
If you start feeling better, write as much as you can. At least it will be the start of something. There's always time to finish. But I do know how you feel. It took me till my fourth NaNo to win and I'd probably be crushed if I couldn't cross that line now.
Thank you for all your kind comments when you are all so busy writing. It both cheered me up AND brought tears to my eyes! But then, nanowrimo is all about comraderie as well as achieving those 50,000. See you next year! OXO Fiona
PS I am told that "OXO" is the new LOL - meaning hug-kiss-hug.
Hey, don't give up. There are still several more days left to add to your word count, even if you don't hit 50,000. Besides, you can always just hang around here and listen to the virtual clatter of keyboard keys.
Sorry you don't feel well. I was sick and throwing up a week ago. I felt better once I'd purged my system, so I think it was something I ate rather than flu.
And some people don't write 15,000 words in a lifetime.
You are not a loser - no way! Until I actually tried it this year I had no idea how hard this whole month would be. I'm behind now, but I am catching up. I intend to win, but if I don't, the experience is incredible and the people here are so supportive (and very clever I might add!)
Ok, back to writing for me. And I sure hope you feel better soon.
You were lucky to have a mere attack of the runs, Zookeeper, especially as you are near the finish line. But I took your advice, - alas,my symptoms didn't allow more than another 1,000 before I took to my couch. My GP visited, viewed nano website/forum on my lappy while taking my temp/blood press etc - said she thinks we're all quite mad going for 50,000 in a month! (Who can read their writing anyway!!!!) She said gasto- -flu cases are being officially monitored by region so the men in suits know which areas in UK are worst effected. Scotland and South West worst to date.
Idahocat says I am not a loser - and knows how difficult Nov is for us "wrimos" , evenwithout the sniffles and runs!
I shall keep my lappie switchd on next to me so as to view everyone's progress - with env, of coursey!
There is always next year for us, roadkit. And who knows, your 489 words might just catch the attention os a literary agent is you email them to an agency!
My opinion is that there are no losers. Even if you only wrote 10 words, that is 10 more words than you had a month ago and it started your juices flowing. I'm a "loser" and a "winner." Technically, I'm a loser because I didn't hit 50,000 words. But I''m a winner because this is the first time I've also put my novel down on paper (computer) and got right to the crux of my story. Even though my stat says at this rate I'll be done by Jan. 12th, I think I can finish it by Christmas Day. I'm really psyched to finish it. Then I plan to put it aside, read it in about three months going through it with a red pen and making notes on where I need to do more research or develop the story line and/or character more. I would love to say that by next November my transcript is being sent to publishers. So I have about 19,000 words and right now about 70 pages give or take, but not formatted in the correct manuscript way so may come out more. I'm so excited about what I've accomplished and everyone who at least tried should be too
Well done everybody! I know how exciting it is to pass that 50,000 mark and get the winner's badge but Nanuchka posts very wise words. As she say, there are no "losers".
I am just so appreciatove of all those who used important writing time to cheer me up when I realised I wasn't going to be a winner THIS year. Next year...I am already planning...

Re: First Year Loser!
You are NOT a loser! You've got over 15 thousand words you didn't have in October!!! That's more than some people write in a year.
I hope you feel better soon. Take care.

Hey, you've got more words than me! Feel better soon.

Re: First Year Loser!
If it makes you feel any better, this is my first time at NaNoWriMo, and I have failed miserably, and without having the flu or any other malady. Ugh.

Re: First Year Loser!
I have so many excuses for being a first year loser, most notably that I came across the idea of NaNoWriMo well into the month of November.
And here I am, well into December, late at night, posting about it.
I should really be writing my story. I have so many words left to go.
