2012 Geezerly Plans - First 3 months

Happy New Year, everyone. Yes, it's still a few days away, but there's no reason we can't start celebrating early!

Do you have any writing goals for the upcoming year? Well, how 'bout we just say the first quarter: January through March. Retire and devote hours a day to revision and creation? Begin editing the 2011 NaNoNovel? Begin editing a previous NaNoNovel? Write something new and better?

I'm going to be editing either my 2010 or 2011 NaNoNovel. I've read them both through and still haven't decided which to work on. My target is to spend an hour a day. In November I got up early so I could write for an hour before going to work. That time will become my edit time.

I'm also going to try to blog more often - once a week would be good!

What are your targets for the first part of the upcoming year?

I need to figure out the social networking thing...

I keep hearing about using blogs and FaceBook and Twitter to gain a fan group. I have no idea how to do this and no idea how much time a day I would be devoting to these endeavors. So there's some research right there.

Then I will take the responses of my Beta Readers for the Nano 2011 novel, do another rewrite - and if I feel good about the book I'll either send it to publishing houses, or epublish it myself.

LOL - and then of course I'll have to find someone to provide some artwork for a cover! Oh la la - so much to do and so little time.

Re: 2012 Geezerly Plans - First 3 months

I was planning to finish editing last year's novel and get it published in January, but this year's novel took over, so things have already changed. I'm just starting the third draft of the 2011 novel, and will probably publish that first. Then back to 2010, finish and publish. I also plan to finish and publish several short stories and novellas that have been hanging fire. I really have to get that WIP pile down.

June is for Camp NaNoWriMo. It's the first time I'll be doing it, with a story that's been nagging at me for a long time. It's been an idea with no plot, but I have that figured out now, so I've started the note-taking and outlining process.

I'm also going to try to learn GIMP so i can do a better job of putting together my book covers.

For my writing blog -- more reviews, mostly of Indie books. And the serialization of the 2011 novel.

1 - Finish editing my NaNo-2011 novel - it turned out to be only around 11K words in case anyone is trying to do the math on my word count - and then send it to an on-line publishing site.

2 - Finish the first draft of my next story. I've already started working on it by dreaming up the plot details. Now I just need to turn all that dreaming into actual words.

I was lucky enough to gain a pen pal who happened to choose me as a nanowrimo buddy who suggested taking the month of December off and begin the editing process in January. They had done this before (my first nano) and found the month of reflection on the experience and how it changes one was invaluable. Also, it has provided a rest from the sometimes frantic schedule of trying to make the word goal on a daily and / or weekly basis.

I'm rested and raring to go with the editing in January--and it is true-- the time of reflection has been informative and I have been able to realize more deeply what it means to me to set a rigorous daily writing schedule.

Re: 2012 Geezerly Plans - First 3 months

Unfortunately, life has me completely booked, for January... so I'm trying to not let thought of my writing, interfere.

BUT.. come February, my plan is to do a first edit of my 2011 nano, using some of the feedback from my beta readers, while some ideas are still in my head about how to improve/expand the story. Then, I need to start working on my blogs... I have half-hearted efforts hanging out there, for both my profession-related blog, as well as a personal blog. Then, I want to take what I've learned in the last couple of years, and go back to my first nano (2009)... and see if I can turn it into something worth editing. And then do the same thing with nano 2010. And then go back to nano2011, and so some more tweaking.

OR.... I might just leave all the nanos, as they are, and start working on some ideas I have, for new stories!

The one common thread between these two options, is that I am NOT going to wait until next November before I get back to writing.

I'm visiting a friend over the New Year holiday, and she also has a novel in progress. We're hoping to grab some time to do a mini write-in while I'm there. As a result, I've not been writing, pending arrival at her place. I'll do a read of my mss on the plane, and work from there.

Goal is to have something to my first reader by end Jan at the latest.

While that's out, I've got another novel to plan. That should keep me fairly busy, especially if I get comments back from my first reader quickly.

I didn't write at all in December, and I can't blame the holidays because I really don't celebrate them.

It's time to get back into the saddle. I have a pre-Nano novel that's out to a beta reader. I also intend to finish the first draft of Nano 2011 and finish the next draft of Nano 2005. I have some notes on the final fight scene for Nano 2005. I have to find them so I can incorporate them into the book. I also have a couple new scenes I want to insert, and I want to go over the plot logic and make sure that it makes sense and doesn't go off kilter somewhere.

Everything keeps changing. I have two chapters to go in the third draft of my novel, and I'm starting to serialize it on my blog twice a week. Also planning to publish it late this month, or early next month. I've dropped the 2010 novel, temporarily, and will be trying to get the 2009 novel ready for publication in the Spring. A now and then side project that I've moved up is a how-to on using Smashwords. I'm not going to have any time to get bored this year.

Hi Everyone!

I'm working on a short piece for Kindle Direct Publishing, I'm editing a novel I completed during an earlier NaNo, and I'll be editing my recent NaNo completion.

And if that's not enough, I started a YouTube channel and a podcast. You can listen to my most recent podcast on YouTube. It's titled <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzFvIjkmdjQ" rel="nofollow">"Hemingway and NaNoWriMo</a>" and I think it ends the way we all feel after completing NaNo.

Happy Writing Everyone!

Lawrence
