Music is my main interest. I play, piano, guitar, and I sing. I compose all different ways. I generally start with lyrics, though. Then depending on what feels right I play with chords on the guitar or piano. I sing what feels right. Then I find the vocal line on the piano so I know I'm on key and such. Then I go back to guitar and transpose the guitar chords and picking onto the piano. I come up with my more impressive harmonies by working with my piano. I love writing songs, but I also like covering. My Immortal was the first song I performed on piano for a recital. I recently got together a nice piano version of Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls. With your piano background, you'll pick up guitar really well in no time. Playing guitar tabs on piano is a useful skill, by the way. To me, it was like riding a bike. One day it just...clicked. With piano you get more payoff from steady practice, I feel, but guitar is like... it works or it doesn't. I went through phases of trying/giving up on guitar from the ages of 11-14, and when I was almost 15 I finally was able to do the chord changes all right. So good luck. I sing and play guitar, ukulele, violin and a bit of piano but we don't have the piano anymore, but my main instruments are my guitar and my voice. Singing is mainly musical theatre - I've got a lot of power in my voice hehe, and I'm a mezzo-soprano, specializing in musical theatre, a bit of classical (I have quite an operatic higher register) and some chart stuff - mainly ballads. Been struggling to sing recently - I have suspected M.E, and one of the symptoms that's hit me pretty badly is the sore throats - they're nearly constant, and it's severely reduced my ability to sing. I've had to kind of give up on my dream of being in musical theatre thanks to it, because I can only really belt out one song before having to rest my voice for a couple of days, and even when I'm just singing songs I find easy - I find songs in my higher register easier on my throat than the lower register because in the lower register it can sometimes be quite... I think gravelly is the word? Like Adele, basically - I can only do a few before I get exhausted. The sore throat isn't the worst of it but it's possibly one of the most annoying things - I love singing SO much, and I hate not knowing when I'll next have a little relapse and end up not being able to sing for days :( Still, it's giving me a chance to brush up on my guitar and play that whilst my boyfriend sings - he's got a gorgeous voice, even if he's incredibly shy - and hopefully soon it'll be well enough for me to perform at a few hotels/holiday parks and earn a bit of money this summer. I write songs using my piano and guitar (and my voice), and record what I like on quality digital recorder so that I don't forget it. I would recommend getting a recorder, because if you get a good quality one, it sounds like studio recordings, especially when you edit it after uploading it onto your computer. I have written a very pretty piano solo called "Dryad's Lullaby," a piano and voice medley called "For You," and a guitar and voice medley called "Cry of Snow" for a christmas album. Those were my best three, and I've written many more. I find it easiest to start with chords that you find appealing, and work with it from there. I wish you luck with your songwriting!!! As in all the time. I write songs, but the only instruments I play aren't really the best to sing with. It's impossible on the flute unless you record them separately, and with the violin as well, unless I want my moving jaw shaking the instrument. And they're not really very good lyric accompaniments anyway. The goal is to get a ukulele and get started on some serious stuff. In the long run, I want Broadway, but I have this pipe dream of being an indie artist. I'd like to get a YouTube channel for my music once I actually have some stuff recorded.
