I found this thread last year and it was really popular so I thought I'd start it again.

You know you're a literary nerd when...

... you feel insulted when someone isults a book you like.
... the books you're going to return doesn't fit in the returning box at the library.
... you read classics and truly enjoy them.
... you have a "to read"-list that's over 200 books long.

fill out with your own!

... you study French because you want to read Les Miserables in the original version.
... you want to read the classics in English even though it's not your mother tongue.
... you don't visit the library anymore because there aren't any interesting books you haven't read yet. (I am not kidding you. From the age of six, I have visited that library. There is no children's literature, YA, Fantasy or genetics book I haven't read.)
... your friend visits you and the first thing she says when walking into your room is "I feel like I'm in a library."
... there is no such thing as 'too many books'. There's just 'not enough bookshelves' or 'not enough room for bookshelves'.

.. When you for years have heard family members joke about you have the library in the town
.. When your selection of fantasy books probably is larger than the library's.
.. When you always need room for more books. And when you finally get it, you fill it up already and need more room again!
.. When your parents have joked about you wanting to read Shakespear in the originally form even though it is not your mother-though. But the joke fell to the ground, because it was so true.
.. When you have stayed up all night just for reading. First realising it 5 o'clock.
.. When you hide in the school minimal library when you doesn't feel well/everything is too much
.. When you really love going to libraries. And bookstores. And second-hand book shops. <3 And could easily be in there for days.
.. When you die a little inside everytime somebody opens a book so it says "crack", leave it open (haven't people heard of book-marks? I have no idea about how many times I have closed a family members book because they "didn't bother") or make a donkeyear (don't know if it's the right word. My dictionary didn't have it :/)

- you browse the Gutenberg Project and download the classics to a thumb drive for easy reference.
- you think about building an extension to the house to handle additional books and magazines.
- you stop watching television on a regular basis because you want time for reading.
- you have a program for keeping track of your books.
- repairmen visiting your house ask if you are a teacher, based on the books that they see.
- you sort books by topic and have several topics, other than fiction, that occupy several shelves.
- you reread the rest of the books in a series after the latest book in the series comes out.
- you collect specialty dictionaries, thesauri and books of quotes.
- you are clueless when it comes to identifying the names of current media and sport stars but you can recite the history of hundreds of fictional characters.
- winning a big lottery will mean that you can build the home you wanted, with the giant, yet expandable, library.
- you buy leather bound books because they are more durable, they smell good, they are pretty, they feel good and they may be the only way to get certain books in hardback form.
- your comfort 'food' is a good book.
- you anxiously await the latest book from a couple of dozen writers because you're read everything in your library, several times over.

You only only bought a e-reader because you need to be reading a book everywhere, (on the bus, while waiting to be interviewed, secretly under your desk at work, or even just while walking down the road), and there are certain tome-like classics that make that somewhat impractical in paper form. (Before I bought a kindle I ruined a number of jackets by insisting on stuffing the Dumas novel I was reading into the pockets so that I always had it to hand)

... when you've read all your course litterature for this year already. Twice.
... when you complain about not having enough of money for food and clothes all the time, but somehow still can afford buying new books.
... when you started reading books in English when you were eleven years old - even though it's your third language and you started studying it the year before - because you disliked translations so much.
... when you read classics in old English even though your mothertongue is Swedish at the age of fifteen - and understand most of it.
... when you somehow manage to read around twenty books each month - besides eight hours school everyday, homework, writing 1000-6000 words / day, meeting friends, playing the piano and life.
... when you can read your favourite books over twenty times and still love them exactly as much as you did the first time you read them.
... when you're ok with your apartment looking like hell, but are ready to kill anybody who puts one single book in its wrong place in your book case.
... when your list of favourite books contains over seventy different book series.
... when you've been planning your Christmas list since July - and it only contains books.
... when the first question you ask everybody you meet is "Do you read?" - and immediately dislike them a little if they answer no.

- When friends and family just leave you in a bookstore when they have to go sort something they know you don't care about.
- When the highlight of your holiday to another country is to go see which books they have in the bookstores.
- When you spend much time checking out the books on the bookshelves of someone you're visiting and use the books there to determine which kind of person they are.
- When you'd rather buy books than getting them from a library just because you want them to be on your shelf when you're done with them.
- No holiday is complete without books for the trip.
- Your family doesn't applaud you for reading, they think it's slightly annoying.

Yep. XD This. I always also look at the title, pick up the book, read the back. Usually by this point I think, "Ugh, cliche". But if I want to give it a chance, I open it up and read the first line (does it grab me?) and then read the first page. Then I usually toss the book away.

I also give a scathing look to all of the paranormal romance novels before proceeding to trying to find an actual good book.

When you raise the circulation rate at your library by roughly 3 percent.

When the librarians know you by name.

When the librarians have a box designated specifically for your interlibrary loans.

When your second favorite way to spend time at the library is wandering up and down the Sci-Fi shelf, looking for books you haven't read yet, because it's like Where's Waldo.

When your FAVORITE way to spend time at the library is to wander the fiction section at large, just taking books you want to read until you can no longer actually hold them all.

When one of your prized possessions is a signed book by your favorite author.

When your family doesn't even bother asking if you have a certain classic novel, or even a certain classic short story or poem - they just ask for it. And you always have it.

...when you feel extremely uncomfortable and anxious if you leave the house without at LEAST one book on your person.
...when your English teacher excuses you from tests because you know more than she does.
...when your favorite store in any town is the book store that has old, rare volumes literally piled from floor to ceiling.
...when your dad comes to you for something new to read instead of going to the library.
...when you want to boil someone if hot oil when they call books "stupid".
...when you're better at organizing the shelves and returning books to their correct place than the old librarian that's worked there for longer than you've been alive.
...when you buy a new book every time you go out, even though you haven't finished reading the last one yet.
...when you can read three books at a time and still separate the plots in your head afterward.
...when you can't decide which books to list as your favorites, so you either list the ones you read most recently, or you write, "Anything and everything, as long as it doesn't suck."
...When you buy a typewriter simply because it's the same model used by a well-known and influential author.
...When, because of your nearly photographic memory, you can remember nearly everything from a book and therefor don't need to read it more than once...but you do anyway, for nostalgia's sake.

.. When you have stayed up all night just for reading. First realising it 5 o'clock.
.. When you die a little inside everytime somebody opens a book so it says "crack", leave it open (haven't people heard of book-marks? I have no idea about how many times I have closed a family members book because they "didn't bother") or make a donkeyear (don't know if it's the right word. My dictionary didn't have it :/)
I've definitely stayed up all night reading, with school the next day and that guilty pit in my gut saying, "Go to bed." But the other side says, "Just one more chapter," and before I know it I'm done with the book and I have 15 minutes before I have to get up for school.

And I know the crack you mean. Like someone just broke the book's arm and doesn't care. And the donkeyear, I think people just call it "earmarking," though I totally understand what you mean by donkeyear.

... you can't help but gawk at someone when you mention you just finished a great book and they respond, "Oh, I don't read."
... you get excited about a Christmas present entitled "The Adventures of English: The Biography of a Language."
... your book club reads a classic Jane Austen novel, and your fellow members have "trouble with the language" that you breezed through. And then you sit there listening to them say how hard it was while you resist screaming, "It's English!"
... your mystery book club reads a cheesy modern book that hurts your soul, and to make yourself feel better you go charge $20 in the classics section, earning you weird looks and comments from your fellow book club members.

(this is an amazing thread! I'm amused/disturbed by how many of these make me shout "ME, TOO!" So here's some more, some of them are probably here already....)

-you read classics for fun
-you try to get your friends to read classics
-you squeal with joy when someone asks you to recommend a book
-you have a handy recommendation list of books on your person at all times
-your main criteria when buying handbags/purses is, "How many books can I fit in this? Paperback or hardback?"
-you will buy a book even if all your clothes are fraying
-you go to libraries/bookstores just to hang out (not to mention all the times you go there to get a book)

- When you get a discount from both of those secondhand bookshops for being a regular customer.

This is so much fun and so true.

You know you'rea literary nerd when:

..You feel sorry when shelves don't have the bend in the middle. They look so sad.
...When you borrow your family members library cards because the 30 book limit is not enough.
...You promise yourslef that you will not fill up your new college library account (50 book limit :) ) but still find yourself with a full acount a few weeks letter and explaining to the librarian that you just turned in a bunch of books.
...At the library they always know when you're there and automatically start checking in books. The listen for the tell-tale thunk of books.
....At the library you always have to wait for them to check in your books to pick up your holds.
....You limit your time on your library's website because if you don't you will end up requesting as many books as you're allowed to have checked out.
....when your family and friends have an overdue book they just give it to you to turn in because you'll be there long before they will ever get around to going there.
....you can hardly work without piles of books around you.
....your corner of the couch is off limits to the rest of the family because they are affraid of knocking over your piles of books.
....you fill up your backpack with books even though you know that you'll only have an hour at most for fun reading.

...you are addicted to sniffing...books, that is.
...if you spend an hour in a book store, just staring at the amazing-ness of books, that's short for you.
...you are convinced the reason Barnes N' Nobles has comfy chairs by the books is for you.
...your heart actually starts beating faster when you notice that your birthday/christmas present is rectangular and thick.
...it then does a skip when it has been confirmed that the content is, indeed, a book.
...it's cheaper for you to get a Nook/Kindle/thing, but then you would miss out on the touch, feel ,smell, etc. of real books.

- You know what "Wherefore" means.

I was shocked by that statistic too. The average American only reads about 60 books in their adulthood. I read that much in a slow year (and I am not someone who breaks the library book limits unless I have a research project).

All. The. Time. No matter who it is, no matter how much they love to read, no matter how well I know them... I just get so scared for my beloved novels. Especially when I have to lend books to my sisters for school. Somehow, being chosen by their teachers, it makes those books less worthy of care in their opinion. Ohh, how I hate summer reading >_<"

... when you spend extra time at your college library reading books you find interesting.
... when you choose reading as your "break" from studying (especially if it's for finals).
... when you go all Grammar Nazi on your friends when they speak, are drunk, and/or send you texts.
... when your friends are careful how they speak around you because they know you'll correct their mistakes.
... when you die a little inside when people tell you they don't like to read.

- When you read Shakespeare in the original, old-fashioned English even though English is not your first language.
- When you can actually say something about classic literature that isn't praise.
- When you live in a big city and yet the people who work in your favourite bookstore know your name.
- When you have a favourite and least favourite style of writing instead of genre or author (for me, favourite = post-modernism, least favourite = minimalism.)
- When you geek out with your teacher over literature.
- When you absolutely refuse to say anything about a genre unless you've read at least five different authors from it.
- When you're scandalized if someone doesn't like reading.
- When your first thought after buying a new book is "Wait, do I have room for this?"
- When you realize that while other people spend too much money on parties and clothes, you spend WAY too much money on books!

*No one is surprised when you enthusiastically tell them a Barnes and Noble gift card is the PERFECT birthday or Christmas present (and you are secretly irritated when they get you something you have to unwrap)

*You campaign your school to allow you to read all the "Banned Books".

*The most horrific thing you can think of is a house fire...how will you get all the books out in time? They must not burn!

*You REFUSE to get a job at any bookstore (even though it would be AWESOME) because you know you will spend your entire paycheck there before you get home.

*All your ex's know if they want to find you, to look for you at the local bookstores.

*The city librarian asks you to be on the planning committee for their newest project, and you don't even work there.

*The school librarian asked for your help picking out new books for the school library.

*Yard sales are for books only. You offer to take all the books for one flat rate.

*New pens and notebook sales make you squeal and dance around with joy...you don't care that all the moms shopping for back to school supplies are staring.

*You are stressed because your computer is making funny noises and you're not sure how much longer it will live. (Please please don't die during NaNo!)

*You're friends and co-workers are worried about you because you are upset about something that happened in your novel ("Well...YOU wrote it! Why are you upset? Just re-write it!") You get even more upset at that suggestion...

*Even the cats know to leave you alone while you're reading or writing on the computer.

*The family knows that if you're reading, they are on their own for dinner that day.

*Any extra money you have goes toward books...and you haggle to get the prices lower, just so you can buy an extra book or two.

Re: You know you're a literary nerd when...

Ooohhh... I hate cracked book spines. I don't understand why anyone would do that. It makes me want to cry. My boyfriend used to do that, but I quickly (and quite harshly) trained him out of that habit. I have a habit of not loaning books to certain people because of how they mistreat them. I mean, I'm all for people wanting to read and loving to read, and I love helping other book lovers get their fix. . . but not when they are going to ruin my books. I loaned out a copy of "The Lovely Bones" which ended up getting passed around to a couple of people. It came back to me with so many cracks in the spine that you can no longer read the title. I don't care if you think they are "love marks." I can read a whole book just fine without cracking the spine, why can't you? Don't you realize that after bending it that way so many times, it will fall apart? I would rather have my book for forty years with only a few cracks, by accident, then purposely destroy it over the course of a couple years and have to replace all the time. I had a similar issue with a book called "Unwind." It got loaned to one friend, and she loaned it to, like, everybody, because it was so amazing and she felt that everyone she ever knew needed to read that book. By the time I got it back. . . *shudder* I don't even want to talk about it. Lets just say that I let her keep that copy and bought a new one.

Where I am from, they call it dog-earing or earmarking, but I know what you mean. I do have to say that that is one of my poorer habits with books. I tend to earmark, rather than bookmark. Mostly because I tend to lose my bookmarks far too easily.

Re: You know you're a literary nerd when...

I apologize if any of these things have been previously mentioned. All of these are 100% accurate for my life.

When you plan all your vacations and trips around author's birthplaces and the settings of favorite novels that you're going to reread once you get there.

When you seriously contemplate learning German just so that you can read Goethe in the original language.

When the people around you understand less than a third of references/jokes that you make on any given day.

When you have to pause the DVD to rant for ten minutes about changes that have been made when you are watching a movie adaption of a novel you've read.

When no one wants to watch movies with you anymore (see above).

You spent more time in the library than your dorm room in college (and it was for fun, not for studying!)

When you are thinking about moving so that you can have an extra room JUST for books. (Come on, who here wouldn't want to pay an extra $100 bucks a month rent just to have their own LIBRARY).

When you're first thought and reaction to any circumstances is wondering how you can work this into your next novel.

When you organize your teas/coffee collection by literary genre (i.e., This Earl Grey is only for British Mysteries... this herbal concoction is definitely a Sci Fi tea. This dark roasted coffee is most appropriate for gothic novels....)

You don't have time to watch television because it would take away from your reading time.

You've worked in a bookstore and you spent half of your paycheck BEFORE LEAVING THE BUILDING.

You buy multiple copies of the same book (the edition matters, people!)

People have to move stacks of books to find a place to sit down in your house.

Your cats are named after book characters (and you can't have children because you would name them something embarrassing like Lestat or Dorian or Jane or Sherlock or Holden or Scout or Anne (with an E) or Eddard or Trillian or Annabel Lee...etc...)

When people mention they're reading a very obscure book and you've read it at least twice.

All your future children are named after characters like Tyrian Kingslayer, Fitzwilliam Darcy, and you vow to never name even a goldfish Isabella or Edward.

You check out enough books from the library a week to fill a car backseat.

Parties to you are just convenient social reading events.

NaNoWriMo to you is about practicing different styles of writing.

Ayn Rand is your hero.

I have not yet read "Atlas Shrugged," but after seeing the film, I think she very well might be once I get around to reading it.

... no one understands the references you make because many of them are about literary classics.
... you have rules about how to handle your books, and you spout out the list to people whenever they ask to or need to borrow your books (I. Hate. Summer reading. My sisters never respect my novels).
... you can tell your roommate in a second about a site she can go to that explains how to use the Chicago Manual of Style format for her bibliography (happened tonight XD).
... you don't understand why people make the same grammar mistakes no matter how many times you edit their papers (PERIODS GO AFTER THE QUOTATION MARKS. GOSH O_O ).
... no hmwk assignment seems long anymore because you've completed NaNoWriMo, even when it's an 8-10 page paper.
... you get frustrated when you can't go beyond a certain page limit for papers.
... you can easily make a 5 page paper a 10 or 12 page paper because the novel it's on has so many topics you want to explore in your writing.

When you read all the classics (William Shakespeare, Jane Austin, Ben Stoker, Sir.Arthur Conan Doyle)

Hate when teenagers fawn over horribly written books and think it's the best thing they ever read when Harry Potter, The Nighters, Peeps, Uglies/Pretties/Specials, Hunger Games truly top it all off.

When all you want for christmas is a gift card to your favorite book store.

When your English teacher stops calling on you since you know too much about the author and book that's going to be read.

When your English teacher likes the fact that you take recommendations and follow through on reading them and give a review back for extra credit.

Hate when bad literature is getting published (I mean spelling errors and grammar errors.)

When you read the whole mythology section and find interest in biographies of world history interesting.

When your bookshelf is filled with books no one's ever /read/.

When you speak eloquently to the classroom and people are like...can you dumb it down?

When you figure out that those from the 19th 18th 17th century have better stories.

When you know the correct way to say words (inexplicable instead of unexplainable, definitely not defiantly).

My favorite: When people stare at you for reading five books at the same time and then say that reading is just a job...a job? I wish!

Ha! This. Definitely this.

When I went on vacation with some friends this summer, the place we stayed at had awesome amenities. So as we walked around, that's what I said--"This place has awesome amenities."

I was essentially met with blank stares. "What are amenities?" they said.

I said, "They're the things the complex includes, like the pool, the tennis court, the laundromat."

"Oh...Couldn't you just say 'perks'?"

No. I couldn't just say "perks." I didn't mean "perks"! If that's what I meant, I would've said it. Besides, "amenities" isn't even a big word!

... you find a book you've been wanting to read in aforementioned bookstore, and you're so excited you jump up to reach a better handled copy of the book when you're too short to reach it properly.
... you're not even bummed out that you're too short to reach the book you want because you're smart. You're innovative. You know you'll find a way to get it.
... you're bummed you don't always have the time to stay on top of in-class readings.

Re: You know you're a literary nerd when...

your roommate who you've only met for about a month buys you books

the young adults section at your local library consists mostly of books you've donated to them over the years

you contemplate for days about whether or not you really need a new pair of shoes when your current ones are rubbing your feet raw, but only need two seconds to decide that you must get the latest [insert author]'s novel when you still have three of their books waiting to be read

you've trained people from very early on that the only presents you'll ever want are bookstore giftcards or cash (to spend at a bookstore)

leaving a bookstore is like getting your heart ripped out (who will care for all these books??)

you consider making a terms of agreement form for people who want to borrow your books

you get horribly depressed every time you think of all the books you haven't read

"Oh, that was a great book!" "...that was a book? I'm talking about the movie." "There's a movie?"

you want to be immortal so you can read all the books in the world

you want to learn every language in the world to in order to do the above

you consider becoming best friends with your professor because she said she likes to smell books

you've run into a pole while walking with your nose buried in a book

your elementary school teacher complains on your report card that you don't play with kids at recess because you're reading

you freak out when you accidentally crease the cover of your book and contemplate buying a new one

you used to hand copy books that you borrowed from the teacher's library (this was back in first grade, when the books weren't all that long)

you read with a flashlight under the covers because your mom forced you to go to bed

you can spend over two hundred dollars in one trip to the bookstore, but only spend the same amount on a year's worth of clothes

Re: You know you're a literary nerd when...

. . . Someone says something mean about a librarian, and you immediately get really angry and launch into a tirade in the defense of said librarian.

. . .You visit your school library twice a day on average.

. . .Your school principal issued you a special pass last year to allow you to read during lunch.

. . . You don't have room for all your books.

. . . If someone wants to borrow one of your books, they are questioned deeply about all their reading habits, pets, siblings, bookmarks, etc.

. . . When someone gives you back a book that you've borrowed, you examine it thoroughly to make sure it hasn't sustained any damage under his/her care. (If it's not acceptable, they hear about it.)

. . . Your dad wanted to make sure you were being social, so he asked what clubs you were in. You responded: book club, poetry club (of which you are secretary), and quiz bowl. He laughed at you.

All of these have happened to me.

... If you don't have enough time to read (since you can't do one chapter, just the entire book in one go), standing in front of your bookshelf and running your fingers along the spines, remembering how much fun you had, is good enough.

Oh and I just started reading The Cantebury Tales and I LOVE it so far.

- you sometimes discuss ways that you could prevent a Fahrenheit 451 style world from gaining hold.
- you think of bad things that could happen to book burners and how they could be done without a trace.
- you have multiple copies of favorite books.
- you think of what books would be needed to rebuild civilization, and you make sure that you have them in stock.
- you wonder what it would take to rescue Hypatia of Alexandria, the last librarian of the Library of Alexandria, plus whatever volumes were in the library at the time. (You do, of course, plan to make things appear that she did die and that nothing from the Library is missing. Cloning, replicators and teleporters are wonderful devices.)

I suggest an interlibrary loan. You'll have to check with your librarian, but for the library I go to you only have to pay a fee if the book is borrowed from an out-of-state library. Besides that there are some restrictions (my library won't borrow anything less than a year old, and most libraries won't borrow or loan best sellers that are on high demand) and a small waiting period, but you get the book!

As I said, it's probably best to ask your librarian for details. :)

Re: You know you're a literary nerd when...

"Why is there a book next to the stove?" is not an unheard-of question in your household. The answer is, of course, "I was reading while I cooked".

You've been two hours late to work because you only just realised that your favourite store for used books has a basement, too. A rather stuffed basement.

You go to the library when you're upset to cheer yourself up.

The best thing that happened to you in the past few weeks is that your favourite bookseller is employed again. Yay!

You don't mind if people insult your taste in clothes or music, but if they insult your taste in books, well, *that* is a punch in the gut.

You can forgive your sister pretty much anything, even that she blabbed a certain secret to everyone despite being told to keep it to herself, but that she THREW OUT some of your books? You will never forgive her for this. And what did she mean by "I thought you didn't need them anymore"?
All of your friends think what your sister did is unforgivable as well.

You cancel on friends because "I'm sorry - I've been waiting for this book to be released for years now. It comes out on Tuesday. Of course, I preordered it. I'm really sorry but I can't do Tuesday".

When you are actually happy that the shops in one shopping centre have stopped selling certain essentials because that means the only place that sells them is also right near your favourite bookshops and you have a legitimate excuse to visit more often.

When the owner of one of those shops knows you well enough that he lets you pay what you want/can afford to for a book that you saw and really wanted but didn't quite have enough for.

(Happened to me today. Did my essential shopping, went browsing and saw the complete plays of J.M. Synge for £3 in the secondhand bookshop. I was 4p short so he let me have it for £2.50).

....when you are counting the days to get a drivers license - JUST for the sole purpose of going to the library whenever you want.

I did something like that, too, now that I think about it.. Fourth grade, I think. Maybe third. I was reading before the bus came, and my mom wasn't home that morning like she usually was or she was doing something with my little sister (a toddler at the time), so my dad was in charge of taking me to the bus stop. Only since he never really did that before, he didn't know what time he was supposed to take us. Well, anyway, I was getting some reading done, then suddenly I look up at the clock to see how much time I had left before we had to leave, and the next thing I knew it, it was almost 7:30am, I had missed the bus, and school was going to start in about 15 minutes--it pretty much takes that amount of time to get to my old school since it was 2 towns away, and my dad sped me and my other little sister to school, and I think I just made it in time.

-When your reading list is almost a thousand books long (989, to be exact)
-When students in an AP English 12 class complain about an independent reading assignment and you're horrified
-When you have to prove to your teacher that your book is, in fact, appropriate for said reading assignment (Dead Souls, Gogol)
-When you're teacher once formed a book club for you because she thought you were antisocial because you read too much
-When your geometry teacher hates you because you read while she's teaching and still answer all the questions right when she calls on you
-When your English teacher routinely asks you for suggestions on good books to read
-When you have in depth discussions on said books with your English teacher
-When you scoff when someone says they've watched the movie of something you're reading
-When you hit said person when they ruin the ending and refuse to speak to them ever again

You hold the book so that when you are reading the page you are reading is in front of you and the other one is at a less than 90 degree angle. Also do not set a book down flat on a table and leave it open. It's not hard to not crack the spine it just takes common sense and practice.

...when you intentionally select historical fiction books to read that correspond with what you're studying in history, because it's so much easier to remember things if you read them in novels
...when everyone asks you for the answers in English class, because they know you've read the book before (That's the last time I ever open my big mouth...it took me way longer than it should have to finish my own packet on To Kill a Mockingbird, because I made the mistake of saying it was one of my favorite books and ended up helping everyone else in the room.)
...when you read most of an 800-page book over Thanksgiving break, and everyone in class who doesn't know you well is very surprised. (One kid accused me of doing nothing but reading over break, I said I did other stuff, he said, "But I bet you read more than an hour a day," and I said yes and just looked at him, because I really didn't consider that a lot of reading.)

-you "borrow" a copy of A Midsummer Night's Dream from your English teacher because the people in your class reading it out loud are mangling it.
-no one asks you for book recommendations because they know you'll list at least ten books related to whatever they're looking for.
-your English teacher takes your book away several times, no matter how much you insist you can read and listen at the same time.

Oh my gosh, YES. I sit right by her desk, too, so even though I do my best to put my textbook, binder, and whatever other books I'm carrying on my desk so she can't see me, I'm pretty sure she knows I do the first example problem with the her and the class, do the rest on my own because it's faster than copying it off the board, then just read the whole time. Then, when she asks the class for answers, a lot of the time I'll have the right one.

...When you're reading "Nevermore" by Kelly Creagh and, while their mentioning some of Poe's works you literally go through the list and say, "Read it. Read it. Read it. Going to read it later--actually, I can read it now." Then you grab your English textbook, open to the only story mentioned that you have yet to read, and begin reading.

I didn't shut up for probably half an hour after seeing the adaptation of The Lightning Thief. Then I saw Iron Man 2 with someone who did the same thing and I was going "I don't care about the comics, okay? I watch the movies, and the movies don't pretend to be a totally faithful adaptation," realized what was happening, and asked my mom "Is that what I did?" She said yes. Whoops. 9_9 But as far as I can tell, Lightning Thief was WAY worse than Iron Man 2.

Ugh, my sister always leaves her books open, face down, because she's too lazy to go get some scrap paper for a bookmark. (I use playing cards myself. Keep a stack on my headboard and I'm good for a year.) She'll just leave them for hours, even days, and if she leaves it too long, stuff gets piled on top.
I've stopped letting her borrow my books; if she wants to read it, we have a perfectly good library just a few minutes away.

haven't people heard of book-marks? I have no idea about how many times I have closed a family members book because they "didn't bother") or make a donkeyear (don't know if it's the right word. My dictionary didn't have it :/)
Yes. I totally understand. And since I keep losing my bookmarks, I make donkeyears. Poor books.
My reading speed is well above 300 words/minute, I'm fifteen and English isn't my mother tongue. I read "Reaper Man" in fourth grade, when I was nine or ten years old. Four hundred-or-so pages of Pratchett and I was hooked. Read Neal Stephenson's "Anathem" for fun when I was fourteen and re-read it twice last year. Did the same with LotR in English and Silmarillion. I've read about half of the Riftwar Saga by Raymond Feist, most of Pratchett's books, and countless other singles and series. Currently working my way through the Change-series and saving money so I can buy the rest of the Rain Wilds-series and the Malazan books.

Re: You know you're a literary nerd when...

. . . You have a hoard of book store gift cards stashed in your room.

. . . You are utterly depressed because you've read all the good best sellers and can't find another decent book to read.

. . . You're done reading the chapter of a book after your friend is just finishing the second paragraph.

. . . You actually have to focus on reading slowly because you don't want to finish the book.

. . . Your friend asks you to read their four-paged story for them, and you find yourself pointing at a million words saying, "This is spelled wrong", "You forgot an 'e'", "You need a comma there", "Capital letter after the periods" and "Why on earth do they live happily ever after?"

. . . You find yourself laughing out loud in the middle of a library because the main character in your book said something funny.

. . . Instead of a pony you want a Kindle.

When someone asks you to proofread their essay and you agree. But three minutes later you hand it back saying:
"You edit it. It doesn't have paragraphs, it's a wall. It has a million and one spelling errors and eight trillion and two punctuation errors. I'm not going to read it until you fix it."

When you get straight A's in Reading and English(not to mention every other class that you get straight A's in).

When you get so frustrated that your parents won't take you to buy new books when you REALLY need them(such as now).

When you can understand Shakespear and don't understand why others don't.

THANK YOU!
I get on to read online fiction (especially fanfiction) and I'm like "Dude. Paragraphs. Punctuation. Spelling. Now."
Granted, some people have the excuse of trying to download their fiction using their phone, but it wouldn't kill them to wait until they got to an actual computer.

I feel like that now, although, for fun, I started reading Dante's Divine Comedy right after I finished reading the Twilight Saga for the first time (I loved both, how's that for weird?). I just think I should be reading more books but I never can find ones that seem to really sing to me, that's why most of my reading lately has either been out of my favorites (Tolkien and Rowling mainly) or writing reference books. It makes me feel sad at times.

Because history books never really touch on the battles or put them into any real sort of context, content merely on throwing their mention in the text for only the most basic requisite that they happened. Fantasy book battles, and any event put correctly into the context of history, bring the story of those events to life but putting them in the correct context.

Instead of chucking it out with all the books you don't want when you properly finish (graduate from? lol, different educations systems) school, you keep your poetry anthology that you were given for English because it has awesome poems in it.

When you get told off in English classes because you "read ahead". Apparently it's a problem because simply saying "read to page 30 by next lesson" just DOES NOT COMPUTE in my head. The book in question was only a couple of hundred pages anyway - absolutely nothing.

When detention at school is to stay behind for an hour and read a book, and you don't see that as being a punishment, or a deterrent from getting more detentions. I don't even get an hour of uninterrupted reading time at HOME, this is supposed to be a detention? Pfft.

When your friend comes over, comes into your room, and says, "Whoa, you've got a lot of books."

While my brother's dream "if I had Bill Gates' money" house involves a trampoline room (which, admittedly, does sound fun), my dream house has a library.

Similarly, on holiday in the north of England, and on several visits to Alnwick Castle (and gardens). My thoughts are not, "ooh, it'd be nice to live in a castle", or even, "hasn't Sarah Ferguson done a fabulous job with the gardens?" but, "I WANT THAT LIBRARY!"

Your favourite Disney princess is Belle, because she reads, and Beast gives her a whole library to herself! XD

When you work in a secondary school, and despair at the fact that the students don't respect the library. My colleague, an English teacher, doesn't see the big deal. WHAT THE... :O

When you get annoyed that people don't think a librarian is a hard job. "I mean, you just put books away, right?" (I'm not even a librarian, although I want to be, and it REALLY bugs me.) :@

When you congratulate your friend on reading a book from cover to cover for the first time in years. I don't even care that his choice was some entrepreneurial bestseller on how to make a load of money. He still read a book! :D

When you seriously cannot imagine a life without reading, or books.

When you don't even like the book you're reading in English, and you take more notes and have more ideas for your paper on it than any other student in the class.

When you know that the Oxford comma is called the Oxford comma, and your english teacher doesn't.

When you and a fellow grammar nazi go around correcting the grammar of all the anti-alcohol and anti-tobacco signs hanging around the school.

When you measure time by whether the library is open or not.
