I was wondering if this happened to anyone else. Imagine my surprise when my apprentice-MMC goes to the front of the watchmaker's shop, only to see a gangly-looking young man in a bow tie, purchasing a pocket watch!
I have so many DW references, it's shamless XD One of the main characters is a species pretty much exactly like the Adipose and my antagonist is a troll called Moffat (after Steven Moffat, the head writer) aha :)
I had a young doctor in fantasy regency novel who was gangly and odd and tousel-headed and had a blond assistant... I also consciously inserted Max Headroom into a fantasy novel just to finish NaNo.
I randomly had a little girl show up, and I called her Rose. Only until later, in the middle of that scene, and notice that she was... well... And one of my shopkeepers, a little character, looks suspiciously like David Tenant...
Ironiclly I came to this thread to tell about how when I was really tired last night, I wrote about the TARDIS appearing in the middle of no where, it had nothing to do with the story, I had just been watching old Doctor Who's (which is what made me stay up so late)(and what is keeping me behing in my novel) and at two in the morning, that was the only thing I could think about writing about. I guess I'm going to have a lot to edit in December...
It's amazing how many DW references I just absentmindedly put in. Although the best one was when I reread over what I wrote last night, and found a scientist explaining to my MC that a certain piece of technology is able to "reverse to polarity of the neuron flow" - of course we all know that neutrons have no polarity, and in this case it's to do with magnetising memory... or something. Oh the things you write in the wee hours of the morning.
Hehe, DW references are made of win. Although, this is coming from the person who realised about a third of the way through her novel that her FMC's cousin is like a cross between 10 and 11 and her MMC is about 80% 10. He didn't get David Tennant's accent though. The cousin got that.
Usually I have intentional cameos or references. Can't remember the last time I did it unintentionally. Well there was this goth chick lawyer. It wasn't until after I described her did I realize 'Oh right that's Abbey from NCIS'
So far I pretty much decided to steal the name Leliana from Dragon Age. I was leaning towards using Leanna, which was close enough. But decided to just use it anyways. They also both have red hair...
I always insert references to and quotes from various movies/shows/games/etc. into my novels - I can't help it, it's practically a biological necessity for me! Since a great deal of my story deals with my FMC being institutionalized and my MMC being a serial killer, I fully intend on slipping in some Girl, Interrupted and Dexter references at the very least, with many more as the story goes on. I know for a fact my guy is going to use the Trinity Killer as a point of reference for his own M.O. :]
My favorite reference I've ever done was from my '09 novel though, when I managed to work the infamous "Isn't that a girl's name?" line from Zeta Gundam into my story.
So far, I have both of Valjean's prisoner numbers as the POW number for one of my characters. The other character has this one: 3 0 50 – 1 1 9 8 1 3, which is the days in November, the word goal, the month's number, the year it started, and the number of regular people who work in OLL.
Oh! I so want to have the Doctor show up as a cameo in my story! Can you really do that?
I'm doing historical fantasy, so I have a bunch of historical cameos in mine. Bram Stoker and Queen Victoria, to name a few. Lord Salisbury, the PM at the time as well.
What I *really* want to put in is some kind of reference to My Little Pony FiM, but I can't for the life of me figure out how. Seriously, names like Twilight Sparkle and Rainbow Dash stick out in 19th century London. I will find a way though!
Did you just.... ...no, it couldn't be. You must have been thinking of somepony- er, somebody else. (Really, though, I love you for this. I made one or two stealth Fluttershy references, just because I'm beast like that.)
You could always have your characters head down the racetrack for a scene or two and let them bet on the horses. Even in Victorian times, jockeys couldn't resist giving their steeds stupid names =P:
"And it's Rainbow Dash leading the pack, with Applejack in second and Twilight Sparkle making a pass for third!"
Yeah, I'm such a pop culture junkie that I just can't help myself. Pretty much ALL my texts are chock full of shout-out to various song, people, movies etc. I don't know if it's a bad habit, perhaps I should try to tune it down D:
I'm thinking of putting The Doctor in ... just to be a part of the DW Multiverse ... YEAH! I also think that Stephen King / H.P Lovecraft (My writing idols ... ) are going to make a brief cameo ....
My characters are theater majors, so there have been several references to musicals and plays already. I've also referenced Hitchcock's Vertigo, How I Met Your Mother, Disney's Song of the South, and Firefly.
Erm, the bartender at the diner my FMC frequents and gets tips on zombie hot spots from may or may not be modelled after Sam Winchester from Supernatural. Hee.
Well... I do have aliens, so maybe I can work in Doctor Who. My FMC's adopted mother was originally written as a half-Time Lord fanfic character, after all...
I'm only a few paragraphs in, but I've already worked in a subtle reference to the Nostalgia Critic's "Take over the world/Of Course!" gag.
Almost forgot- my other FMC works in a sci-fi themed coffeeshop and uses a sonic screwdriver prop to fend off a supervillain. I guess I have worked in Doctor Who :P
Oh! And I thought of another one. The title for my story is from the last names of two explorers. These two guys: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roald_Amundsen http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sigizmund_Levanevsky (Except that I just relised that Mr. Levanevsky's name keeps showing up spelled wrong. I'll go fix that. Blagh.)
I.. MAY have just shamelessly named my (main?) character Dar Rvin. :-: My friend told me to have Darwin in my novel, and I just realised that I'd managed to name my char Dar, so... Interesting :P
I haven't really referenced anything from outside my head yet. However, my second MC and a minor character were once a Pidgeot and an Ampharos, respectively. I characterized my Pokemon and then realized I wanted to do something actually useful with them.
Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?
I was wondering if this happened to anyone else. Imagine my surprise when my apprentice-MMC goes to the front of the watchmaker's shop, only to see a gangly-looking young man in a bow tie, purchasing a pocket watch!
Doctor, is that you?!
Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?
That's pretty awesome, actually, and it made me lauh. He can go everywhere in that TARDIS of his, so why should people's novels be off-limits?
Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?
*laugh
I should really proof-read before I post.
Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?
Aw man, a DW reference is genius! And my novel includes space travel. I just might do it.
Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?
I love this! I want to have DW running all through my novels now.
Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?
I have so many DW references, it's shamless XD
One of the main characters is a species pretty much exactly like the Adipose and my antagonist is a troll called Moffat (after Steven Moffat, the head writer) aha :)
Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?
Now I feel compelled to create a troll named Moffat. xD Brilliant.
Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?
I'm going to name my main character's pet raccoon Moffat now.
Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?
Makes me think of High Wizardly from by Diane Daune, she has the Fifth Doctor appear.
Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?
She does?! I need to reread that once December comes.
Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?

Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?
The Doctor is in every novel, every fanfiction, every screenplay ever written since the beginning of time. No exceptions.

I'm watching NCIS right now!

Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?
I love that you include Valjean's prisoner numbers. I once had a character who was confined in Bed 24, Room 60, Floor 1.
Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?
probably anime of some sort..not sure which ones :p
Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?
I have a couple of literary references - the last names of my characters are Galt and Faulkner :)

I have a wizard called Star Swirl the Bearded in my nano.
Bamn. Reference.

Haha, I didn't read the post above yours. Time to go hang myself with some barbed wire -_-

Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?
What about a cat?
Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?
Perhaps it the name of some odd underground cult or secret society?
;)
Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?
Most of my references are obscure, so basically only I notice them. But they are still there.
Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?

Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?
I have several comic book references. Then again, I'm such a comic geek that I named a couple of my (IRL) children after my fave comic characters!
Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?

It's going to be a strange year, I think.
Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?
Ooh, how did the HIMYM reference turn out? :D
Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?
Quite well, actually. I've incorporated the Slap Bet into my novel. XD
Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?
Several historical references, and at least one theatre one:
"It's more terrifying than hearing the people sing".
My characters should stop listening to Les Miserables.
Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?
Erm, the bartender at the diner my FMC frequents and gets tips on zombie hot spots from may or may not be modelled after Sam Winchester from Supernatural. Hee.
Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?
Haha! Love this one!
As of right now I am seriously fighting the temptation to stick Castiel in my story somewhere. He is just such a fun character.
Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?
Not to be creepy or anything, but I think I love you.
Supernatural FTW!

Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?
Love all these Who references! xD
My FMC tries to knock out my MMC with a cricket bat. It doesn't work, but it gets a reference in there.
Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?
Isn't it awesome? So much Whovian writing going on. <3

Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?
Well, one of my MC's is named Eowyn Epona. Both names were chosen for their equine connections rather than intentional references.
