Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?

I was wondering if this happened to anyone else. Imagine my surprise when my apprentice-MMC goes to the front of the watchmaker's shop, only to see a gangly-looking young man in a bow tie, purchasing a pocket watch!

Doctor, is that you?!

Usually I have intentional cameos or references. Can't remember the last time I did it unintentionally. Well there was this goth chick lawyer. It wasn't until after I described her did I realize 'Oh right that's Abbey from NCIS'

So far I pretty much decided to steal the name Leliana from Dragon Age. I was leaning towards using Leanna, which was close enough. But decided to just use it anyways. They also both have red hair...

Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?

I always insert references to and quotes from various movies/shows/games/etc. into my novels - I can't help it, it's practically a biological necessity for me! Since a great deal of my story deals with my FMC being institutionalized and my MMC being a serial killer, I fully intend on slipping in some Girl, Interrupted and Dexter references at the very least, with many more as the story goes on. I know for a fact my guy is going to use the Trinity Killer as a point of reference for his own M.O. :]

My favorite reference I've ever done was from my '09 novel though, when I managed to work the infamous "Isn't that a girl's name?" line from Zeta Gundam into my story.

So far, I have both of Valjean's prisoner numbers as the POW number for one of my characters. The other character has this one: 3 0 50 – 1 1 9 8 1 3, which is the days in November, the word goal, the month's number, the year it started, and the number of regular people who work in OLL.

So far that's it...

Oh! I so want to have the Doctor show up as a cameo in my story! Can you really do that?

I'm doing historical fantasy, so I have a bunch of historical cameos in mine. Bram Stoker and Queen Victoria, to name a few. Lord Salisbury, the PM at the time as well.

What I *really* want to put in is some kind of reference to My Little Pony FiM, but I can't for the life of me figure out how. Seriously, names like Twilight Sparkle and Rainbow Dash stick out in 19th century London. I will find a way though!

I am probably going to reference a bunch of NaNo memes, including the TSoD and Mr. Ian Woon. I might also reference characters and things in my other stories. I'll also be throwing in references to 2001: A Space Odyssey, Ender's Game, Battlestar Galactica, Harry Potter, Doctor Who (<3 Doctor), Star Wars, Star Trek, and probably every other iconic fantasy and science fiction story I can think of!

To establish that my novel is set in the not-very-distant future (like 20 years or so from now), my teenage MC comments to her friend about how "that old actor Alec Baldwin, from that classic show 30 Rock died."

I've also managed to name about four auxiliary characters - teachers, CIA agents, suspects, and the like - after different members of The State. It's subtle when you're using last names like Kenney, Lennon, and Allison, but I feel like once I get to Garant and Lo Truglio, the gig will be up.

Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?

Oh, Lordy, I don't think my novel is anything but cameos and references! I'll pick my favorite to ramble on about. :)

It's the third in a series, all NaNo novels, so things are pretty well established at this point. Each of the five main characters (I know that's a trope) is directly based off of a song that was popular in their time period, first of all.
~Ted's full name is actually given in said song, and so is his eventual fate. (The song is "Mrs. McGrath")
~Patrick's name and character are fairly well laid out, although I couldn't follow the song's direction on his outcome. ("Honest Pat Murphy of the Irish Brigade").
~Micheal's character and Rory's are both straight out of songs, although their names are my invention ("Paddy's Lamentation" and "The Minstrel Boy")
~Jack's name is given in "his" song ("Banks of Newfoundland") and unfortunately the only other characteristic I got from it is his tendency towards seasickness. Lucky him.

Apart from that, loads of historical figures show up, and the novels are packed full of inside jokes between me and the only friend who reads my stuff.

My first NaNo I had a hitman character show up mid-novel. Since only close friends know him the reference was only understood by about three people. This year I actually had one character summerise that entire story up to my reporter MC, only to have the MC dismiss it as "Too unbelivable to print." And the guy works at a tabloid.

I've also got some Doctor Who references in my story, as my main character is quite a fan.

My main character is called Marley. This is a reference to David Marley, of A Christmas Carol. This made more sense when I first came up with him, as he started off a lot grumpier and colder.

I've been explicit in my references this year (it doesn't make sense not to be) - so far I've 'namedropped' Slash, Axl Rose, Jon Bon Jovi and Banksy, as well as referring to Playboy magazine and mentioning The Lost Boys. The series my protagonist's mother used to star in pretty much is Charlie's Angels, too ... it's not all on purpose, I swear! most of it's going out once I have time to think up something more fitting/less explicit, but I'm writing on the fly here. xD

Also, I guess I've managed to sneak in a few American Psycho references here and there, namely with a character drinking/not drinking Cristal and most of the characters looking through the Zagat guide more than once. I was going to mention Dorsia, too, but that would be WAY too explicit. xD

On an unrelated note, Dorsia is opening/has opened in London. Hmm ...

The Doctor does not exist in this universe(sadly) since one thing I can't stand is human/humanoid characters as wolves/fox/lion or whatever, but I saw Sherlock as a sheep once and that was awesome. Still I'm keeping to my own rules of about it, even though my FMC have a personality and backstory which is an extreme version of two characters from Doctor Who, my headcanon that is.

Example: my titles are wordplays on movies or movie quotes. Chapter 1 - An Offer She Can't Refuse. (Godfather) Chapter 2 - Adaptation. Hopefully. (adaptation.) and the in-progress Chapter 3 - Eternal Darkness of the Spotted Mind (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) Also, she (my MC) tends to use films as inspirations or topics for discussion. As she's writing a metafiction screenplay, her screenplay also contains the tropes found in films.

And it also turns out that dear Amelia Jones is becoming quite the important plot device. Go figure x2.

I've been name-dropping as many Victorian-era famous people as I can think of (even though I'm sure I've put many of them into the wrong decade...ah well, it's an alternate universe with steam-powered spaceships, I can have Poe, Wilde, Dickens, Jill Tracy, and Isambard Kingdom Brunel living and active at the same time if I damn well want to). I also suspect reference may be made to Disney's Treasure Planet (one of my major inspirations for this novel) at some point, if I can work something in without it just becoming a Treasure Island reference.

Other than that, nothing yet, although I suspect there will be many, many in-dialogue in-jokes.

Oh, and I almost forgot that I made 'the renowned Spiritualists Mr. and Mrs. John Fenton' guests of honour at a dinner party. They're building 'a contraption to allow easy access to the world of spirits'. It may blow up in their faces. >:D

Usually my writing is chock-full of literary references, but now I'm doing historical, and... (geeky drum roll)...

I chose the time-frame specifically so that I could have Nathan Leopold (half of the Leopold-Loeb thrill-killing duo, yes yes) make conversation with my FMC. There's actually a lot of stuff in that case that connects to events in the book.

I even worked out a calendar and did geographical research so it would be perfectly plausible that they'd run into one another. It's too perfect.

The last two of my novels have had DW references in them, so why should this year's be any different? I've already kind of made a Star Trek reference or two (not hard, considering it's a sci-fi), as well as plenty of references to my past novel, which this one is strongly based on (it's all kosher, though. Relax guilt-monkeys).

Will probably soon make all sorts of nerdy/geeky references to stuff I've seen and read recently.

Also, it seems that there is some sort of connection between Wrimos and DW. I know it's an amazing show, and all, but does anyone else see this weird correllation?

Jack the Ripper appeared briefly in the prologue. Charles Babbage is going to be playing a slightly larger role in the proceedings once I get fully into the plot.
Several of my characters were given their monikers based on actual people of historical importance:

Francis Hobbes (Francis Bacon and Thomas Hobbes who were philosophers)
Algernon Burton (The poet Algernon Swinburne and Sir Richard Francis Burton the explorer; credit goes to Mark Hodder's Burton and Swinburne in ... books for this one since I was reading them at the time I was naming characters.)
and my MC's mother (deceased) was originally a Burns before marriage (name checking Robert Burns, the famous Scottish poet; seemed appropriate for something set in Edinburgh).

Considering when and where he's appeared in all these books, I'm pretty sure he's a Time Lord.

My MMC spontaneously decided to be the Tenth Doctor, accent and hotness and all. Except he's got a bit of Moffat's Sherlock tossed in as well. He's already said "I'm sorry, I'm so, so sorry" once, and I'm going to make sure he says it again.

My FMC looks and acts suspiciously like Amy Pond.

My antagonist informed me he looks like John Simm.

I'm going to have someone say "Hello, Sweetie," to at least one guy in my novel, as a River Song reference.

There are a ton of other Doctor Who references, too, such as a scene that plays out a bit like a Who-style regeneration, an obsession with the stars, etc. I may or may not name a certain location a variation of Stormcage.

This is quite possibly the most fun I've ever had with a cast. >8D

Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?

My entire novel is inspired by Doctor Who craziness. My main characters' home planet is like Gallifrey meets that planet from last year's Christmas special. My MMC is basically the Doctor crossed with Rory Williams with a bit of Prince Charming (and he's ginger). I already named a character Steven, but now I'm really tempted to name one of my troll-inspired aliens Moffat.

I have a spaceship that's one big "Portal 2" reference (as a gift to my obsessed brother). The ship is called the Borealis, is run by Captain Caroline Gladose and is owned by a company that contracts with the military to provide shower curtains. The CEO is a Mr. Johnson who's prone to crazy rants, and Rick the Adventure Sphere and Fact Core get cameos.

I also accidentally made a Gilligan's Island reference with the sentence, ""He's ginger," Maryanne protested", and left it in. That line was also meant to reference a scene at the beginning of "The Prisoner of Zenda".

I'm pretty sure that the tenth Doctor and Donna Noble from Doctor Who have made slight cameos at some point in this novel. It actually kind of scares me, because both were accidental...

There are a ton of references to various fantasy novels though. My FMC is obsessed with fantasy series-- specifically, Harry Potter...

I referenced a Greek poem by Moschus that has my characters name, but I highly doubt anyone is going to get it.

"Lament for Bion" is the name of it if anyone is interested. Moschus is my characters friend in the first chapter, and Moschus (The character), say a modified line from the poem before Bion leaves in his time machine.

It was a pretty fun reference.

I don't really mention actual characters or people in my novels. Though I have referenced or directly-named dropped several entire works. I think my current list contains: The Bible, Paradise Lost, 1984, and Soylent Green. I'm sure references to Fahrenheit 451 and Brave New World will follow soon. I'm also toying with The Matrix references.

(You know, I actually think the line "Soylent Green is people?" is in there somewhere.)

Well, two of my main characters are basically modeled after one of my favorite pairings in all of fandom (won't say who, I feel like I'll jinx it!), and the whole novel is about this motley crew of four...or five...or maybe six, if this new guy who just showed up joins in...who avert Ragnarok. The FMC is Loki incarnated as a human, and her brother's psycho ex is named Anna (yes, after the Anna in SPN. Shoot me.). I have a conversation about Narnia in the novel. There's, hmmm...I repeatedly liken my Love Interest's smile to Jay Gatsby's...and I'm thinking about referencing Deadpool (the Marvel character) at some point. But yeah, most of my references are accidental.

Also some of my MC seem a little familiar. Cobber looks mysteriously like Prussia from Hetalia >.>

Oh yeah...and I forgot, I included at least one reference to my 2009 novel in my 2010 ScriptFrenzy play. The FMC was trying to get theatre tickets; she found out that "One Perfect Bride" (NaNoWriMo '09, assumed here to have been rewritten for the stage) was being performed, but was all sold out (of course!!) and was very disappointed till her best friend called to say that her brother (FMC's future love interest) had bought tickets for all of them as a surprise. When FMC told her middle-aged mentor/friend about the surprise, the older woman commented that that had been her own favourite book when SHE was a young girl...Might as well rewrite the past to include my current masterpieces as well.

The monsters' smell, the one they can't shake despite shape-shifting, is that of a rotten kumquat. "Little Dogs on the Prairie" (which no one else has probably heard of) featured four small rotten kumquats in its first episode, "Stanza By Me". They just sound funny.

FMC also mentions in internal monologue that the monsters' anti-human campaign is like the Matrix in real life.

Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?

I actually don't think I've snuck in any hidden references/cameos yet. Most of the things I have referenced so far are fairly obvious (being the book, "Of Mice and Men" and I made note of Farmville notifications on FB.) I did have the one part with dungeons inspired by a portion of the game Amnesia (although it isn't mentioned, just a bit of trivia) and my character's name is an obvious reference to Lawrence Talbot of the original Wolfman. My MMC's middle name is even Lawrence, despite it not being mentioned. :3

However, this thread gave me the idea for a Being Human reference. Oh, BBC, how I do love you. I'd sneak in a Doctor Who reference, but this works out much better. Although, I could probably sneak in both, with one of my FMC's being British. Hurrah for references to George and the Doctor. :D

I've somehow managed to make a tradition of putting Charlie the Unicorn references in my novel. I didn't do it intentionally at first, but after reading back some of my NaNo novels, I noticed that they kept cropping up, so now I've started putting them in on purpose.

I always end up using Avenue Q references, too. And this year I've got a few Harry Potter references. I might put in a Doctor Who reference too, just for fun. :-P

I couldn't help but stick a few Star Wars references in mine. First, I have the one that everyone would get with one of my MCs calling her weapons trainer Yoda. Then I have a few that only extreme geeks would get like "But Calady wouldn't get revenge!" Which is from the fact that "Return of the Jedi" was originally going to be "Revenge of the Jedi" until they said, "wait, but Jedi wouldn't get revenge!"

There are also a few song references too like I have one scene that's basically playing out the song "Funhouse" by P!nk.

Yeah, I've already got two cameo/ redrences in. Firstly, I needed to have a passive nurse to appear for about half a champter then go awayforever. Somehow this ended up being Rory Williams, though I will probably have to change thatone when I re-write XD Also, one of my MCs was origionally conceived whilst reading 'Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy', so I decided she should have a Hitchiker's Guide lying around in her room : ) Made writing more enjoyable anyway...

There are tons, and I'll probably have to remove a lot of them. I've posted here before, but I had to post again and mention this: I have four central characters who adore musical theater. My MC's father's name is Roger. It took me exactly 50,049 words to made a RENT reference. I am ashamed.

It's funny I actually just--partly--unintentionally made a reference to my last year's novel. It's kinda a long story but the main thing is the line "Say your goodbyes, pray to god and imagine everyone in their underwear." Which was originally in a dialogue from last year that went:
"Remember, nothing is imposable you might just need to do a little butt kicking first!"
"But what if it's the butt kicking that's imposable?"
"Well then you say your goodbyes, pray to god and imagine everyone in their underwear."

Apparently imagining the mob people who are trying to kill you in their underwear makes it less awkward? lol

I might even get a "bigger on the inside" reference in there.

Also, reference to "Blink"? Yes please! That episode freaked me out so much...

There are so many other references in there as well, but the Doctor's the only one with a cameo. I won't name him in the novel, 'cause that takes the fun away

This novel is now officially stuffed with them. o_o;;

I have a scene that bears striking resemblance to one in American Psycho, the entire college section and some beyond it is essentially taking the form of The Rules of Attraction, I have a nod towards the short story, Guts, and so many name drops I think it accounts for at least half of the 22,810 words I've written for it thus far. xD this is without mentioning the various references to American Idol ... and the particularly odd story I once heard about a guy getting very lonely and his cat being the only living creature nearby at the time ...

There is a total parody of the song We Found Love In A Hopeless Place by Rihanna in my novel. It just kind of happened and before I knew it there the whole song was, acting itself out through two sisters.

Beatrix was squinting, there were yellow diamonds in the light. They were standing side by side. And her shadow crossed Diane’s. Here was so much more alive. The way I’m feeling, I just can’t deny it. But I’ve got to let it go. Beatrix promised herself not to be incredibly angry with her sister.
“Diane, why do you keep taunting me like this?”
“It’s not taunting, and besides. It’s your overactive imagination after all,” she said, clicking her tongue and smiling “the battlefield is a hopeless place for love.”
She faded away, with a wink. Or that could have been Beatrix’s imagination again.
A light shined through her open door. Love and life she would divide. She turned away, wanting to sleep more. She felt Diane’s heartbeat in her mind. It’s the ways she’s feeling she could not deny. But she had to let it go. What odd advice, ‘the battlefield is a hopeless place for love’.

I couldn't resist doing this:

“What’s your name?” she asked. Still the others remained silent, watching this encounter. The guard seemed surprised a prisoner would ask him such a question.
“Kieran,” he replied, “Kieran McGee. Or Private McGee, officially.”
“McGee? Like NCIS?” Tammy’s voice betrayed her excitement. Kieran laughed.
“Yeah, I guess. I love that show.”

Yyyyyeah. Hey, I needed a good Irish last name, and Tammy has already mentioned that she watches crime dramas in the novel!

Hahaha this is great. The cool thing about writing about Muses is that even in serious situations, you can afford to give few nods to your favorite authors and creative individuals. Just pick which character "inspired" them.

That being said, I think most of my references will have to be cut in revisions, as they are mostly just self-indulgent.

But I actually started a cool tradition involving cameos just this year. I've decided that every November, I will find a place for a character from the previous years' NaNo to make a cameo. I did this last year, and this year I decided to make it a tradition ;)

-Another character's last name is Lucretia, because I've been watching The Borgia's lately. My references are fairly eclectic in nature.

But Mr. Ian Woon is going to make an appearance as a federal prosecutor in a few chapters.

Also, I named two minor (mentioned only) characters after two people at my table at the NaNoWriMo kickoff, and a baseball player after my cat.

Considering my MMC is heavily based off of the actor Jensen Ackles, there's a bunch of Supernatural references in there.

- His gun is a Colt
- He wears an overcoat (I should make clear here that I am NOT a Destiel shipper, I just thought it would look cool on his character)
- He sings Eye of the Tiger in a Denny's, causing him to get kicked out

As well as other things. Once my characters get to Ireland, there will probably be something about seeing a blue box on the horizon or something.

my storie is set in the year "204-5 NE" (New Era)... sooo in CE would be... 2220 or there abouts. The old world is lost, along with a lot of knowledge etc from the time.

There's a few references to books with pirates in them , but no names mentioned in particular. But there's a direct reference to Alexandre Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo, when the woman poisons herself and her son, but the count hadn't a problem with the kid and hadn't meant for the child to die and he starts to rethink his actions.

So from that the main character takes the phrase "The child should live - … regardless of the conflicts of the parents" as her motto.

He spends his last few minutes talking about this girl called Rosie he was going to marry, before he goes a bit delirious and starts going on about lava and giant eagles and holes in the ground and then finally dies...

One of the footmen goes to work for Jack Harkness, whereas Ianto Jones is working for the police in Portsmouth and disposes of Jack the Ripper's confession letter.

Several long-dead family mebers also appear in it briefly, because they were mostly domestic servants and I needed names and families for maids.

Honorable mentions:
"Hey, you run too fast!" "You're too slow, little girl." FFX-2
"Ah, no power. Just like home!" COD: Black Ops (Nikolai c:)

My whole novel is one gigantic pop culture reference

The main character is named Russell Davies Jones (This may have to change to make it work with the time frame, I'm thinking wither Peter Davison or Tom Baker) who has an unseen sister named Sarah Jane

One of the main characters is LL Cool J

Another is known ad the Man in Black. I imagined him to be like the announcer for the old radio drama Suspense

The main female character knows everything that Dr. Benton Quest knows do to an encounter with a special television and a 13 hour Jonny Quest marathon.

Nerf weapons abound throughout the book

The main characters meet author Craig Shaw Gardner

And the LL Cool J character fights... LL Cool J.

This is only a few of the references.

Re: Cameos/references in your NaNo novel?

I have so many references to Doctor Who and Harry Potter, it's not even funny.
Here's a good example:

	“Kieth, Paper.”
“Just a second,” Kieth said, fumbling with his jacket pocket to retrieve the small pad of paper he carried with him everywhere. Finally, after several seconds, having brought out a small pokeball, a deathly hallows necklace, a thing of chapstick, a dollar bill, some quarters, a cell phone, and an ipod, he handed Mr. Smith his notebook, along with a pen that had been designed to look like the Eleventh Doctor's sonic screwdriver. (Even though the tenth Doctor is way cooler.)

I can't decide whether Kieth is the bigger geek, or my narrator is.

“Wait. So, instead of some epic-special-chosen-one-hero-man-weapon-tool, he gets a pen? Which means I don't get an epic-special-chosen-one-hero-man-weapon-tool either. This isn't fair!” cried Jacob.
Mr. Smith looked at him, muttered, “this should be interesting,” and said, “When Harry Potter was one year old, he went against Voldemort with nothing on his side but his mother's love. When The Eleventh Doctor was on earth, trying to catch Prisoner Zero in twenty minutes with no Tardis and no Sonic Screwdriver, he did it with nothing on his side but his own wit. When Katniss Everdeen was in the arena with nothing to help her but an alcoholic that wasn't there, she not only survived, but she also defied the capitol and saved a dying boy's life at the same time. When Atticus Finch. . . No, that's a bad example. . .”

I also have extremely geeky characters, who passively mention Star Wars, World of Warcraft, and Call of Duty.

Perhaps this is a problem. . .

Oh, and one of my characters bears a striking resemblance to Albus Dumbledore...if Dumbledore was about four feet tall, at least eleven centuries old, covered in shaggy gray fur, and had EPIC healing/murdering abilities. But he really is Dumbledore. I swear. He has a penetrating stare, eyes that are ALWAYS twinkling, dangit, is the wise old mentor, gives out both random, nosensical advice and deep words of wisdom, and is TERRIFYING when he's angry. See? Dumbledore!

There are a couple of reference to English football (soccer) teams like Tottenham and Manchester City, as well as some popular sports leagues, and the Red Sox make an appearance.

These things have actually nothing to do with the actual story, though, they're just thrown in for the lulz.
I also named an address after Chris Baty. My MC lives at 1667 West Baty Road.

There are a lot of couples in my story, and I gave some of the minor ones names from characters' I love:

-Jonas and Fiona from The Giver
- Holly and Paul from Breakfast at Tiffany's
- James and Lily from Harry Potter
- Susan and Leo from Stargirl

The funny thing was, once I decided to do this, I had a rough time with it because half the names I needed to use were already in use by a totally different character! Fiona, Paul, James, Susan...I had to do quite a bit of switching around to get things to work out okay.

My MC's name is Darren, in honor of Darren Criss. My novel's title is "Because I Knew You," which is a reference to the song "For Good" from Wicked. Some of my characters will be performing in a few different musicals throughout the series. I'm not sure which ones yet, but they will certainly be named and will probably even parallel my characters' lives in some way. MC 1 plans out a date with MC 2, wherein they will be watching MC 2's favorite movie. I haven't figured out what it's going to be yet, but it will definitely be something old...probably in black and white. Jimmy Stewart comes to mind...

In my pre-nano I have references to Firefly, (girl finds toy dinosaurs in her brothers hoody pocket), another character references Kingdom Hearts, and a lot of the characters are based on people I know.
My actual nano references Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Bette Davis, and various other golden-era Hollywood actors in name. The MCs have to take on different ID cards, each named after various actress and actors and some of their most famous roles. I reference Tesco, as the big supermarket giant of the world, my male MC eventually told me that he look just like Rictor from the comic X-Factor, among other things!

It's amazing how many DW references I just absentmindedly put in. Although the best one was when I reread over what I wrote last night, and found a scientist explaining to my MC that a certain piece of technology is able to "reverse to polarity of the neuron flow" - of course we all know that neutrons have no polarity, and in this case it's to do with magnetising memory... or something. Oh the things you write in the wee hours of the morning.
