Also lots to do with pregnancy in Ancient Greece - both for my 37-year-old queen of Mycenae, and my 19-year-old priestess of Artemis.

Mostly anything to do with falling/jumping out of buildings. And what happens when the body hits the ground. Lots of science is involved, and it never has been my strong suit ... even more worrying is that I'm researching math. The subject I swore that, as a writer, was of no use at GCSE level to me. Guess who has egg on their face now?

A lot of it's the grisly side of this, though. Height of the jump affecting splatter radius and all that.

Some of the weirder searches are likely to involve research into the porn industry, mostly, although that was pretty much already done earlier this year (another story required it ... wow, that's actually quite worrying), but most of it was just Wikipedia entries, and funnily enough, reading Snuff by Chuck Palahniuk went a long way toward helping me with this one. Incognito browsing is kind of a blessing, as is having a 14-year-old brother to blame it on should anyone bother to look through my search history.

Wow. I need a laptop.

I'm doing a lot of research on amputations and amputees. It's pretty harmless stuff, but if my family found out they'd probably think it was nuts for a fully functioning and healthy teenager to be looking a things like that.

I've also been looking at types of swords, their functions, where've they come from in origin. Next it'll be about training with a sword and where the "kill points" are in the body. >_< I should just put "how to kill someone with a sword" and see what pops up.

Which means if someone checked my search history, they'd think that I or someone I love had been diagnosed as bipolar, narcissistic, BPD, APD, schizophrenic, and a number of others. All at once, I guess. Um.

this is all stuff i either am now, or at some point did for the sake of my future on the bestseller rack. maybe it will inspire some of you, or at least inspire you not to do it.

i was once working on a story involving a serial killer (yuck, the cliche) but i was really into researching other murderers and serial killer types for that. their motivations, sociopathologies, patterns, and most importantly... the ways they got themselves caught. this was all really interesting stuff, until i realized it was just sort of objectifying human cruelty.

i spent the night as a homeless person when i was eighteen, for the good of my story based on the concept of "write what you know" and because i (even then) found that to be stupid advice given me by a very smart man, i decided he must mean i should experience what im writing about.

the way people learn

how to write like chuck palahniuk (this one was probably the most educational) but now everyone writes like chuck palahniuk, that sort of not-quite-too-hip quasi-conversational writing that just leads to shock value and a disappointing conclusion....

the origin of "the angel's share" in distilling and aging of liquor

-Extremist groups
-Ways to torture someone yet not cause them massive scarring

Last year I googled many things having to do with hiding the evidence of a murder, bootleg alcohol, paying off the police, the mob, and manipulating the law enforcement system.

This year isn't quite so bad, but I've still managed to look up:

Blackmail

Consequences for treason

Legal grounds to disinherit someone

How to know if someone is having an affair

Healing time for gunshot wounds

Avoiding conscription

Psychological manipulation

Bit dodgy, I think.

I think my problem would be that the government would be wayy to interested in my search history...
I've spent all day today researching carrying a gun in London; which types of weapon the police carry; looking up those weapons individually; then I moved onto a selection of government agencies - mainly MI5... along with looking into terrorism...

Yeah, a bit weird :L

Except for the ways to kill people, it's mostly not concerning, just extremely random. I work at home as a freelance researcher too, so mix in lots of searches on the food and beverage industry, nanotechnology, and types of cancer. I'm sure that if anyone is monitoring my searches they have no idea what to make of me.

I'm also researching what happens to the books in a library if the library is closed due to government cutbacks, and how police in a small American town would manage to deflect public attention from the fact that they aren't doing anything about a meth crisis in their town.

Oh, and also researching current drug organizations and how they're moving meth around right now (compared to how they were doing it a few years ago when Methland came out.)

So, I think I'll be researching: public shootings, 80's teen movies, what dead bodies smell like, clever serial killer names, police investigation, abuse/neglect, statutory, quiet ways to kill people. Not that weird but it's new to me.

I research how gene-therapy can be used as a weapon, what UV light does to the human body, and the toxic dose of vitamin D that any one human can withstand and what happens when the body hits that overload.

I've also done in the past; strongest pain killers available in IV and how much can be taken, how long it takes a certain depth wound to cause a bleed out, how many stitches would be needed to close said wound, warning signs of a stroke that normally go unnoticed, how expensive a brand new luxury car can be and what other market upgrades there are.

Lots of medical things that would make people question what goes on in my brain. It only gotten worse since I've started working in the medical field. Really need to use a different name as an author to avoid people looking for me and questioning me ^^;

My novel is about girls who compete in a reality show and if they get eliminated, they die. I was trying to think of how they would die: I wanted it to be quick, painless, and bloodless. Shooting was my best bet and I wondered if there were any guns that fit those specifications. I distinctly remember thinking at one point "Damn...I'm going to have to research what kind of gun would cause a bloodless death, aren't I?"

I haven't yet though. I'm convinced cops will climb down ropes and burst into my apartment like the cops in Minority Report.

I'm also probably going to have to research how to make a bomb.

It might look strange to some if they saw my search history of a high school in a place I have never been. I looked up their hours of operation and attempted to find a blueprint for the school. I also looked up a google maps satellite image of the place. That might be frowned upon but other than that I haven't really looked up anything strange yet.

Nothing too weird this year, unfortunately. Last year it was fun stuff like weapons, action scenes, and killing people swiftly and efficiently. This year it's the usual alchemy, demonology, hierarchy of angels, homunculi, Victorian architecture and society.

Quick, painless and bloodless? Choose any two of them…

No, seriously, I don't think shooting would be bloodless. Maybe you should go for something used for the death penalty? Even though there were human rights activists questioning the painlessness of these methods, I think they are a better aim at quick, painless and bloodless than shooting… maybe you'd want to narcotize them beforehand.
And you'll maybe get away easier with researching the death penalty than guns ;-) If you want to use the gun nevertheless, maybe this site helps: http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Main_Page

(I hope nobody thinks now I'm a kind of weirdo, I swear I'm not!)

here are my actual questions I have written down to answer in the next week relating to my novel:

How long did it take a steamer from London to reach Edinburgh in the late 1800s?
Who was Charles Babbage?
What is a Difference Engine?
When were Burke and Hare active and what are they famous for?
Who were key figures in women's rights in the United Kingdom, specifically in the late 1800s?
Who were some of the key Scottish socialites in the late 1800s?
Map of Scotland in the 1880s

I guess the line of thinking is actually not so troublesome, removing Burke and Hare that is.

Well before I realized the story I was writing is the one I wanted to do NaNo with. I had to look up how Marbles were made and such. I also wondered if it was possible to have made glass marbles in a medieval like setting. But then I realized it's fantasy. So what if I want a clear stone with a colored stuff in it? :P

Luckily I only got like a hundred so words in so I'll just start over with the basic idea when Nov1 comes around.

Oh I also have another thing that I needed to research. Mostly because I was curious if I could add it to my characters clothing... but I never actually found the name of it. Well I sorta got a name for it.

Its that glove/arm cover thing that attaches to the finger by a thread or whatever. So I spent quite a bit of time googling such things.

Hmm...

also I will most likely be watching videos of people weilding two swords or daggers. Maybe rewatch some Legend of the Seeker. FMC uses two daggers to fight with.

But yeah. Other then this... not much.

Stuff I’ve already researched:

Vampires, werewolves, merfolk, elementals, legendary/mythological creatures, the methods of creating a zombie
Magic and various spells
Various cultures throughout history
Genetic engineering and eugenics
Mental disorders and rare physical diseases
Truth serum, mind control and other various chemicals
Serial killers through history
The healing properties of various plants
How to survive in the wilderness

Stuff I still need to research:

Types of weapons, especially swords and guns, and their history
How many people you’d have to kill to have enough blood to paint everything in a house red
Demons
How government agencies and research facilities keep their actions secret from the general public
How you’d go about breaking into government agencies and research facilities
Types of rock formation and diamonds in caves (and whether it’s possible for a cave to have a wall covered in diamonds... don’t ask)

And that’s just what I know of so far... and now my story seems really crazy even to me... oh well. Although I suppose some of it will be a lot more relevant in the sequel than it is now.

This year's research-list is a bit odd, but pretty benign: Longhaul trucking, the use of CB-slang by modern truckers, amenities available at highway rest stops, insomnia and Exploding Head Syndrome and Polaroid cameras.

Previous years, I've researched everything from wooden armour and canal systems to the history of torture, steam-engines and the availability of lethal poisons to the common man.

The locations of MI5 and MI6 headquarters, how to unlock handcuffs with a bobby pin, phone and internet tapping (Perhaps I should just call News of the World and ask them how they did it?) and I also need to look up a good way to poison someone.

I also have researched a few less nefarious things such as the timetable for the ferry from Dover to Calais, waltzing songs, what the inside of the Paris Ritz looks like and how to leave the Ritz without using the front entrance.

Obviously, I'm writing a spy novel!

How to properly dissect a cadaver, what it would like look inside if the body had only been dead for a few hours, what surgical tools were used in such experiments in Victorian England and what other kinds of experiments people could perform on bodies in Victorian England. I've also looked up what kind of infections would spread by surgical tools in the same time period, and what the results of those infections are, how you actually die from those infections.

lol if the FBI looked at my computer right now they would probably think I'm really weird serial killer plotting to kill people slowly with disease-infested scalpels. YEAH MAN.

Probably the two most worrying ones (when taken together) are "Nuclear reactors" and "Breast implants."

Other searches I wouldn't normally run include: "Heat map of the human body," "How effective is lead radiation shielding," "Battery efficiency percentages," "Chinese ship naming conventions," "Artificial gravity by rotation," and "Baby names in the 22nd century."

I doubt I warrant more than the FBI's "Mildly Concerning" list, but I'm considering switching to Ixquick just in case.

Something else to check out is a documentary that I think was called "1900 House". We watched in a history class I took. Not sure exactly what you want to know about the Victorian era, but the documentary followed a modern (or 1990s) family as they attempted to live like the Victorians. I remember it being fascinating and it might help answer some of the more mundane questions about homelife during that period.

My list is pretty tame, this year - rabies, ebola and other filoviruses (I'm trying to design a usually-fatal disease, with elements of werewolfism thrown in); and bee/similar insect society (I have sentient alien bee-people!).

In the past I've had some pretty eclectic mixtures of things:
The dodgiest was probably "trip experiences" for a shaman character who liked his mushrooms. ¬_¬
The temperature and pressure at the bottom of an oceanic trench.
Undersea vents and the life that grows around them
Waterborne poisons used by fishermen to kill fish
A cross section of a geyser and how they work
How hot IS the average Yellowstone hotspring
Aztec society and the role of sacrifice
Elements of Victorian society - and what DID waving a fan quickly mean
Chimerae - not the mythical beastie, but the condition where you get one person from two fertilised eggs.
Butterflies (and man, when you look at them in close detail? they are WEIRD)

Nothing really interesting, yet, since most of my writing has been in the absence of a computer or research device. In terms of randomness, though, I may have that. I've researched common cricket injuries, the difference between a strained and sprained ankle, spondylolysis, English inheritance law, and I'm about to look up typical weather in various parts of England during the winter. You might be able to guess where my novel's set....

The locations of council offices in Salisbury.
How to get from Salisbury to Rotterdam as quickly as possible.
The locations of abandoned WWII airbases in Northumbria (there are a few, but enough of them have been re-used for other things that I'm going to have to invent one anyway).
Common place-name elements in the north-east of England (so I can give my invented airbase an appropriate name).
The effects of removing most of a living person's digestive system. As carried out by not-particularly-skilled surgeons in a hurry.
How to steal a boat, and how to get across the North Sea from (again) the Northumbrian coast to somewhere just off Sweden, in November.
The effects of gangrene.
The writings of William Blake (fun - I always liked his poems).
The writings of parts of the Hitler Youth movement with particular reference to health (not so fun), and the activities of the Nazi T4 program for eliminating the 'unfit' (ghastly).

Can I just say how much I LOVE the internet? Think how much longer it'd have taken to find out any of this twenty years ago...
Nothing too horrible this year, but a LOT of mental health stuff. Many of the results have been of the "What you should know if you or someone you love has been diagnosed with (insert potentially-dangerous disorder here)..." variety.

Which means if someone checked my search history, they'd think that I or someone I love had been diagnosed as bipolar, narcissistic, BPD, APD, schizophrenic, and a number of others. All at once, I guess. Um.

Also a bunch of suicide-prevention stuff.
I have APD, so if you ever need someone that actually has it as a research rat, you're more than welcome to NANOmail me.

Of course, I don't know how buoyant bones are. Now I'm curious.

What do scars by fire burns look like.

And I'm sure there will be plenty more as I go along. :)

- How long do someone live after having their windpipe crushed
- Cicadas
- Mythical Creatures
- Nøkk(Or Neck, Nix, it has many names)
- Interesting ways to die
- Surviving gun shot wounds
- Police departments
- Post mortem lividity

And I'm just about halfway so I'm guessing it'll get worse as I go on.

The other day I looked up the rape laws for my state. I felt so weird doing it, but I needed the info for a story :P
Not just 'typical' rape laws but also statutory rape. Then I get this news story about a preacher who molested one of his youth members and naturally I google that.

The entire time I was thinking "PLEASE don't look at this somebody...I can explain!!!" Haha

Re: Weird Stuff You're Researching

I'm working on my plans for this year's Script Frenzy and June Camp NaNo and so far I've been looking into the following topics:

Head injuries and comas
Foreign-accent syndrome
Christian beliefs about Heaven, Hell, spirits, possession and reincarnation
Maps of various small towns in California and looking at them on Google Earth
What would a priest do if an abandoned baby was found outside his church?
Children's homes, foster care and adoption in California in the 1960s - 70s

Not as incriminating as some of the other stuff posted here, but still rather random if someone were to look into what I've been doing. Last year, research for one of my novels involved looking up Irish prisons, visiting regulations in a maximum security prison and what sort of sentence would be given to someone found guilty of multiple murders.
