What can I say? Sometimes I can wing 'em, sometimes I can't... I needed a stronger foundation for the story to stand on; without it, it started sinking into the murk. Something to work on for Draft 2... but not for a while. (I like to give my NaNo novels at least until January to "season" before I turn back to them. And it's not like I have a shortage of other stories that need writing/editing...)

He threw on his overcoat and put on his hat and, looking once more the perfect image of a dashing Tommy, waved farewell. I just liked getting to use the word "tommy" in this context.

I don't have a favorite line, but I do have a favorite paragraph (I hope that's is okay). “Because I love you,” Desiree said louder than she meant, tears starting to form in her eyes. “I want to be with you, I want to give this a chance. But I’m afraid of it, too. All I can think of is you and Shé. Not you and me. You make her happy, and I-” The words caught in Desiree’s throat. “I hate her for it! I hate that you can give her something she needs! I want it for myself! I want you! And I hate myself for wanting to take it away from Shé! For wanting to take you away from her!” Well, it's one of my favorites, at least. The other one, I think I need the whole scene in order for it to make sense. But I love these paragraphs just for the raw emotion from the characters. No reservations what so ever.

From my non-NaNo novel. I just liked this line. It sums up the character perfectly. :-P (also, this is my first attempt at writing in present tense. I think I like it.) He lets go of the photo frame and turns to me, smiling, as if he wasn't just theorising about his own death.

He dreamed of dark figures reaching out of the night like angry shadows, and of canon-fire, the light of it's flame and the thunder of it's report tearing the shadows apart one by one. This at the end of a lengthy explanation (in journal form) of why the MC has what the other characters consider to be an unhealthy fondness for guns and artillery.

My favorite line, doesn't exist. I have two. 1. "It was a bright room, yet it seemed to be hiding a threatening growl" Yes, I personified it as an animal. 2. "So? Now shut up or when I get my bow back I will shoot you in the calf. So I would back off and leave me alone before I stab you with my knife then shoot you, and I don’t make empty threats.” The threat is the best part.

That IS a good opener. My favourite line from my NaNo is: "He wondered idly how many times this ‘Prince’ needed his jaw dislocated before he could talk properly, and how many after that before he began to speak like a gentleman." Whenever I remember my novel, I always remember that line :D

My favorite line is actually not because it's some well thought out, beautiful prose, but how it's used in context. My FMC was telling the MMC about a dream that she had where this woman and man (who happens to look like the MMC) are at a train station, and he's about to board. Just as he's getting onto the train, the woman says very softly, while she's standing on the platform, "I will wait for you. Always." He turns to look at her one last time, and then he's gone. My FMC tells my MMC a brief version of the dream, not mentioning what the woman had said. And yet, as she's getting up to clear the table, she thinks she hears him mumble, ""I will wait for you, always."

One of my favorite passages from a random scene I was writing. It doesn't seem very good out of context, so basically, the FMC is being followed by the MMC who (the reader finds out) is trying to protect her. But neither knows the other, even the guy is just going off a description he heard. They're on a plane and he decides to explain why he's been following her. Only, because of certain reasons I can't explain briefly, they pretty much start making out as soon as they first see each other face to face...
