However, the boards were COMPLETELY wiped so I thought I'd start it again - hope nobody minds and Adam please forgive me if this seems rude. Just thought I'd get the ball rolling again ... Count me in! I love snail mail although, as another poster wrote, I can't reply immediately I get a letter. I find it easier to give it a few days (not usually more than a week) so I can read through properly and reply appropriately. Just a little about me - I am 44, not married but in a long term relatonship with a guy who is also a writer. I get lonely sometimes because I have problems finding work due to a major accident which left me with many injuries and was exacerbated by the hospital messing up on the surgery! I had just found the job I could do and had to change it because I was physically unable to do the same type of work - I had children climbing all over me in my last job (an 11 year old tried to climb me because he was autistic and frightened of a moth! :-)) I am only tiny (4 ft 11) but he didn't care! :-) I have always believed I have no skills but a conversation with a guy from Working Links revealed my best skill is my ability to listen and be non-judgemental - I can listen for hours and not fidget. As a result I'm retraining to become a counsellor. I love it but it does take you to places you hoped you'd never go again! It also helps you to understand yourself. I have only recently changed my attitude - after the accident I believed I can't do things ... well there's no such word as can't, it's two words and both are an attitude you can choose - I now choose the attitude that I can do anything I want, even if I have to figure out a different way of doing it. I am passionate about my writing (who isn't?) and, given half a chance, would write all day. I can't write with the tv or music on because it influences what I write. In my first novel I accidentally put a soap character in there without realisting it! It actually fits so I've kept him in there. We are making a film of one of my books and hoping for a second to follow shortly. I usually write children's stories but I'm trying to branch out into different genrres. I get very excited when I get a good idea but 9 times out of ten I forget to bring some paper with me! At one point I had 42 penfriends and yes, I did keep up with them all. I am incredibly loyal to my friends and will fight to the death for them. I used to have a phobia of dogs but have over come that to a point because my sister got a gorgeous black labrador and she's so soft I've started getting to know other dogs and have been pleasantly surprised by the fact that they can be friendly! What else? I'm spiritual (very interested in the paranormal though not tarot cards), love photography, castles, history, reading - and interviewing celebrities for charity. That's probably my favourite hobby! :-) I also love finding really unusual facts (probably one of the reasons I love research too). I am happy to write to anyone but obviously I would prefer people to be older rather than just starting out in life ... you'd be amazed how many children gravitate to me! You can pretend to have one all you want, however, just don't waste your time telling me about it because I will be very blunt with how I feel about it. -I'm starting to sound kind of mean. I swear I'm not, there are just certain things I don't want to read about. And if your letter is about something I'm not interested in, why would I bother wasting money to reply to it? So, I would prefer people within the age group of 14-19. I'm open to both male and female penpals, however, I've yet to find a guy who wants to penpal simply for the sake of writing letters. I'm not looking for a relationship because I'm a cynic and I don't believe in them, and even if I was, I have standards and some random guy on the internet is not going to live up to them. So females, pretty much a yes. Guys, I'd love to see someone prove me wrong so I can stop sounding so sexist. If you're going to write me a one-page letter and give me nothing to work with, scroll on down the page. I love discussions and debates. I'm not religious, but I do respect religion unless it's forced on me. I actually really enjoy learning about religion, from an academic point of view. I'm the type of person who wants to learn anything and everything, so if you're the type of person who likes teaching, we're a perfect match :P I'm very, very interested in civil rights and equality. If you're someone who doesn't believe everyone should be equal, we may have a bit of a problem there. If my personal beliefs get offended, I get angry and ranty and it's always best to avoid that. I don't really care about age at all :D I get on with everyone (though I am still confused when people are younger than me, for some reason). But I've got a book literally full of ideas and concepts, so who knows... if I finish those maybe I'll touch back on a genre I failed in previously or try something new entirely. I took a course in meteorology just because I thought studying weather would be interesting (and it was!), and I think the idea of studying psychology is cool. To the homosexuals, gays, lesbians, etc (LGBT?) - I'm not a hater. I'm open minded. I'm a Christian, but my views on this are such: according to my religion, all sins are equal in the sight of God. It's not like I'm any better or any different than any other person on the streets, whether they be straight or gay or whatever. No as some believe nondenominational does not mean that I don't believe in God it simply means that I don't follow a specific denomination or belief. I have a unique belief in God that few others actually hold but it is what I have come to think of as accurate through all of my study and learning. I hate when people judge others and base it on the fact that they are christian. Christians should know, if they bother to read their Bible, that God is the only one who is allowed to pass judgement on anyone for he is the only one that is perfect. I can be very vehement on this subject if you engage me in this topic. However I do not force my views on anyone because I know and completely understand that very few others actually believe in God in the same way that I do. On a lighter note I enjoy watching TV. I watch cartoons in the morning with my son until he gets bored and runs off to play. Usually we watch Cat in the Hat, Super Why?, Dinosaur Train and Sesame Street or any combination of those that he happens to sit down for. Then my grandma watches Price is Right (which I catch a little of), some soap opera, The Chew, The Talk, and Let's Make a Deal. Sometimes I catch these shows sometimes I don't. I like them all except the soap opera. Then we sit down to watch Ellen every single weekday. After that she watches whatever she feels like and I'm usually busy making dinner and feeding Alex. The rest of the night is spent watching whatever prime time shows are on that we like. We always catch Dancing with the Stars though. I think that's about it for me. On that note, since I finished my last English class, I have been reading a lot of dystopian novels and I enjoy reading stuff about the economy (hence me being an economics major). I'm also a big Harry Potter fan, but that's not as big of a deal anymore now that the series is over, so I'm going to move onto other things like finally reading Lord of the Rings, and rereading Narnia. Besides all that stuff I like to craft a lot. Mostly I knit, but I also like to sew (when I have a machine) and this past summer I was working on a latch hook rug, which is currently sitting in my room only half finished. I also like to ride my bike (which is much less fun now that its the rainy season) and I like to bake (when I have the ingredients, which I rarely do). I don't get a chance to watch TV much, but I watched a lot of HGTV over the summer. I enjoy older shows on Disney Channel, though the new ones are getting annoying. Occasionally I'll sit down and watch Psych with my roommate when she has it on (and I'm considering going back and watching the whole show). I think that's about it. So this sounds like a great idea to join in on! I'm Maaike, a nineteen year old from the Netherlands. Being from the Netherlands, you have to know that English isn't my primary language. Most of it I learned by reading and writing a lot. Especially reading. I learned to read when I was three or four years old. My dad always read bedtime stories to me. The stories had pictures in them, so I always looked along. One day, when the story got exiting, my dad put the book away, telling me I had to sleep. Stubborn as I was, I picked up the book when my dad left the room and started to read. Before I knew it, I was actually reading the book, understanding the words. I remember coming downstairs the next morning for breakfast, enthusiastically telling my parents that I could read. They didn't believe me in the first instance and asked me about a few words on the breakfast products. When I told them what they said, they were even more surprised than I was. The first book I read in English was Clan of the Cave Bear. My dad was reading the series at that time and I decided that I wanted to know what he was reading. I was ten back then. It took me about half a year, but I did finish the book. At high-school it was my way of hiding from the world around me. I was being bullied, but people tended to leave me alone when I was in the company of a book. Writing and reading were the same for me. One couldn't be there without the other. Writing was jotting down my own experiences, reading was fleeing from those. In 2010, I wrote a poem about an old guy's last thoughts. Without telling anyone but my parents and a close friends, I signed up for a national writing competition for teens. I won the local rounds with it and went to the national finales. Even though I didn't win, it convinced me enough of my ability to write some good things that I kept on writing. Except for putting words together to form sentences, I'm also a big fan of music. Punk-rock and indie are the genres you'd find me listening to most of the time. I go to shows a lot and love to travel. Both always turn out to be really expensive hobbies of mine. The brown dog in my avatar is mine. Tygo, a bastard dog, the size of a French Bulldog with the athletics of a boxer. I've fed him after midnight and he loves to swim, so even though he might look like one, I'm pretty sure he is not a gremlin. I read the paper and I watch the news. This, combined with Dutch directness, can lead to some pretty fierce opinions from my side, which could be taken personally even if they're not meant that way. I love learning about everything. Personally, I care less about superficial things like that and more about common interests. So what are those interests? Writing, duh. Most of my stories are set in an imaginary, but more-or-less realistic world. No magic, but some made-up languages, cultures and racial and political conflicts for me to play with. Reading. Mostly Fantasy, and I'd much rather have a well-thought-out world than a lot of magic and action. Plants of every kind. I'm a horticulturist by profession, working in a tiny village nursery/flower shop, a houseplant hoarder, a passionate balcony gardener, saving every cent I can towards buying a garden (but I'll shell out a few euros for stamps :D) Those are the main points. I'll also occasionally knit a sweater, plan to sew something but never get around to it, go to medieval fairs (I have a simple medieval-ish dress, but am too lazy to actually get into re-enactment) or to medieval dance practise, travel around Europe (mostly the Netherlands) to meet friends... I love my bicycle and hate driving cars; I love the forest, and loathe shopping malls; I've never had a TV and have no clue about movies; if I listen to music, it's usually folk/medieval, but I have a hard time finding anything that I really like, so I don't listen much; some people are surprised to find out that English is my second language, and I often find it easier to write in English than in my first language (German); I love languages, but I can't even find the time and self discipline to practise my Dutch, Spanish and Latin, let alone to learn another language (I kind of want to learn Finnish. And Ancient Greek.); I'd love to have pets, but don't really have the time for them... Um, yeah... I try to pretend I'm an intelligent person, but in fact I'm dead tired a lot of the time I'm at home, which makes it hard to come up with something witty to say. And movies, well, recently watched and loved: The Hours, The Reader, Quills, Melancholia and Saving Face. Waiting impatiently Avengers :) I also like to read, and now only my thesis to write I have tim... No, wait, I mean I work patiently around the clock with my studies! (Hope my professor doesn't hang here.) My alltime favorite is Henrik Ibsen. No competition there. The dialogues the man could write! I also appriciate Doris Lessing (lovely jump to scifi-genre), Walter Moers (we have great translator to his books here in Finland), Neil Gaiman and Banana Yoshimoto. Then there's also Siri Hustvedt, Cornelia Funke and Slavenka Drakulic. I could continue the list forever. I just love printed word. I also read urban fantasy, although I don't know why. The genre is overflown with Mary Sues and wish fulfillment, and "strong females" are often one-dimensional. But still hoping to find better books, I have browsed through many series (Kate Daniels, Mercy Thompson et all). I guess they entertain me. I like female leads. I consider myself bi, and I'm in longterm relationship right now. My religious views are pagan or agnostic or something.
