It's time to start thinking about...THE KICK-OFF PARTY!
November 1st is on a Tuesday this year. I realize this may be problematic for some people, because of school, work, etc.
Therefore, if it works better, we could have it on the weekend before Nano (Oct. 28 - 30) or the weekend after it starts (Nov. 4-6) If we have it before, we won't be able to work on our novels, but we can still all come out, get to know each other and talk about them!
Second issue is where to have it. In past years, we've held it at the Kingston Public Library. I'm up for that again, if I can book the room. If not, there's always coffee shops, etc. around that are open in the evening.
My weekend before (Oct 28, 29, 30, 31) is really busy for me. depending what day it is, I may be able to make it. I would prefer weekend after NaNoWriMo starts but of course as some have said or suggested, it may interfere with our writing powers somewhat! I will more likely make it if it's the weekend after but I will try to make it either way!
I specifically booked the last few days of October and the first day of November off work so I could write like a fiend. I'm game for meeting up on any day! I liked how last year we got together beforehand and did introductions at the library, and then held write ins at the Sleepless Goat. Both locations were easy to access and I had a blast!
I'll wait for a few more to chime in before making any decisions. There's no ML-email function at the moment, so I hope people will just remember to check the forums...
Unfortunately with the weekend before it's Halloween, and thus I'll be crazy busy running around for that. So I probably wouldn't make it if it were before hand. :( But I could try, I want to get out to more events!
Hey all - new to the group and Nano AND Kingston - so I'd love to meet up! I live downtown - but work in the brand new H&M so I am all over the place and willing to travel. Next weekend in the evening is fine for me.
Just let us know when, where and what to bring! ^___^
Okay...so it's starting to look like the weekend before is not so good for people.
How about, since we're going to have them anyways, we roll the Kick Off into the first write in? It can be the first weekend in November, which seems to be better for people, plus gives us a little more time to plan.
I'm kind of a newb at NaNoWriMo, and am hoping it'll be the kick in the pants I need to revive my passion for fiction writing (I've written a number of short stories and a couple novel-length books, never published, back when I was a teenager)
Okay, maybe we should do it this way. I'm kind of giving up on the library, because I don't think I'd be able to book it at this late date. (I remember I had it booked like a month in advance last year)
Let's take a vote on which night is the best for people -
Monday (31st - guessing not too many people available for this one!) Tuesday (1st) Wednesday (2nd) Thursday (3rd) Friday (4th) Saturday (5th) Sunday (6th)
Best nights for me would be Monday to Thursday anytime after 4 or 5 pm.
I can book weekends off, and probably will book one off mid-month so that if all our write-ins are on weekends I can at least make it to one, but I'd really rather not. I kinda need the money. :P
Pathetically, I do not have a laptop so I can't come to these things. I suppose I could come with pen and paper but I am not sure how much I would actually get accomplished :(
It's hardly pathetic. Laptops and cellphones are two things whose use I just can't see. If I need to do something on a computer, I wait 'til I'm home. If someone needs to call me, they can call my landline.
(b) As someone who doesn't have and will never have a laptop, there's not much point (there's never any room for me to put down my notebook to write)
(c) Unlike the person who finds it gets better as they go to socially anxious settings, I find it gets much WORSE as time goes on. I can handle work, and I can handle gatherings of about five people that I KNOW well, but beyond that, it's just too lonely for me.
(d) Commercial spaces are prohibitive for me - I can't afford to buy anything to drink.

Eeee! :D

Re: Kick Off Party!
I vote before for the kickoff, but I'm biased because I never get any actual writing done at the social get togethers. =D
Re: Kick Off Party!
Haha! We've gotta have some social stuff, though! ;) And I have a new computer this year.... the little rattling netbook has seen its last November!
Re: Kick Off Party!
^ Whoo! No more rattling netbook!
I'll wait for a few more to chime in before making any decisions. There's no ML-email function at the moment, so I hope people will just remember to check the forums...
Re: Kick Off Party!
I kind of miss it, and yet... :P
Re: Kick Off Party!
I like the library idea. I'm more likely to make it to the kickoff party if it's the weekend before.

Re: Kick Off Party!
>.<
Soooo work can suck. I just discovered I work the night of the 28th and 29th. A day other than that for meet and greets or kick off, please!

Thank you all!
Re: Kick Off Party!
I'm going back home on the 28th, 29th, and 30th, so those days wouldn't work for me either. Hopefully we can all find a day that will work!

As for time... does 7 - 8 work for most people?
Sound good?
Re: Kick Off Party!
Is this only for SLC/etc students?
I'm kind of a newb at NaNoWriMo, and am hoping it'll be the kick in the pants I need to revive my passion for fiction writing (I've written a number of short stories and a couple novel-length books, never published, back when I was a teenager)
Re: Kick Off Party!
Nope! It's for everyone who wants to attend. And I hope you do, if you can - it's lots of fun.
Re: Kick Off Party!
I don't know when I work yet. Probably night shift. Weekday evenings would probably be easier for me since I tend to work nightshift on weekends. :S
Re: Kick Off Party!
^ That sucks.

Monday (31st - guessing not too many people available for this one!)
Tuesday (1st)

Friday (4th)
Saturday (5th)
Sunday (6th)
And time -
12pm - 1pm
1pm-2pm
3pm-4pm
4pm-5pm
6pm-7pm
7pm-8pm
Don't really want to go later than 8 pm, in case people are walking home etc.
Re: Kick Off Party!
Best nights for me:
1. Date: Friday November 4; Time: any listed
2. Date: Saturday November 5; Time: any listed
3. Date: Thursday November 3; Time: 12-1, 4-5, 6-7 (6-7 preferred)

Re: Kick Off Party!
Awww....that sucks. We'll definitely have to have some write ins on Monday nights!
Re: Kick Off Party!
Yes, please! :3
Re: Kick Off Party!
I second this. I work at a hotel, which is a 24 hour business, and as I'm a part-timer, I always get the weekends. Yes to weekday meetups please!
Re: Kick Off Party!
Mondays aren't good for me.
Tuesday starting from 3pm onwards is fine
Wednesday: 6-7, 7-8
Thursday: 6-7, 7-8
Friday: 2pm onwards is fine
And I'm more or less free on the weekend, save for any homework.
Re: Kick Off Party!
Hey! I'm good for Saturday the 5th at 7 pm, if that's what's happening. :)
Otherwise, my good times are like
Tuesday - 3-4
Wednesday - 5-6
Thursday, 2-3, 5-6
Friday, Saturday & Sunday any time
But I need to know in advance so I can book off work. :D
Re: Kick Off Party!
Hi there,
I'll try to make it to whatever you schedule - but I may be late ^_^
Re: Kick Off Party!

Re: Kick Off Party!
Okay...since it seems that Saturday seems to be the consensus...
Let's say Saturday the 5th at 7pm.
Everyone okay for the Sleepless Goat? (It's on Princess St. I'll put the exact address in the Google calender)
Re: Kick Off Party!
Wish I could, but
(a) My fella's in town this weekend
(b) As someone who doesn't have and will never have a laptop, there's not much point (there's never any room for me to put down my notebook to write)
(c) Unlike the person who finds it gets better as they go to socially anxious settings, I find it gets much WORSE as time goes on. I can handle work, and I can handle gatherings of about five people that I KNOW well, but beyond that, it's just too lonely for me.
(d) Commercial spaces are prohibitive for me - I can't afford to buy anything to drink.
Good luck to everyone, though. :)
