I wanted to keep you posted on the status of our writing session and event donations! In addition to kicking Atlanta's butt right out of the gate, our first batch of cash donations has reached NaNoWriMo HQ: You can now find "Toronto NaNo" listed on the "Brought to you by..." page under the $250 donors category!
I've got another batch of donations from the events of the past week to count up and send in, too - I'll keep you posted in this thread, and the mods and MLs will continue to collect cash donations at all of our events, for those who would still like to contribute something to help nano run.
This is me offering a huge round of applause to you all! (Errol, help me out here. Pretend we're embarrassing someone.)
You're just incredible!! I'm absolutely blown away, impressed, amazed, stunned, by the generosity of your donations this year.
I've just sent another $400 USD to NaNoWriMo - that's cash collected at events SINCE the $250 from the kick off party. $208 of that $400 is from last night's silent auction alone.
A huge THANK YOU to the people who kindly and thoughfully donated their handicrafts, books, and other items to the auction, which was a real success.
...And of course, this means that Drew and I will be wearing the radioactive ML tees to the overnighter. :D
Aside from perhaps helping power the website, does the money we donate help any writing orgs in Canada like the American youth writing stuff they talk about here? Toronto? and would we be issued with Canadian tax receipts?
...And as far as funding any programs in Canada or Toronto, you'd have to contact NaNoWriMo HQ directly - I don't have the answer, and I'm surprised not to see more detail on that page about their other writing and literacy programs. (If you do email them and find out, please come back here and let us know the answer! I'd be curious, too.)
As far as tax receipts, NaNoWriMo provides US tax receipts for online donations. We aren't able to issue tax receipts for cash donations collected at events.
Thanks - I had seen that page but they don't specify the country these programs are in - I suspect totally US based. So the question then becomes is a US tax receipt useful for Canadians.
But since more than half the $$ collected go to directly support NaNoWriMo it might be a good thing to make a donation anyway since we are availing ourselves of this amazing service/event/opportunity/bit of fun.

A final cash donation update!
As of tonight, December 3, I've just sent in another $150 in ToNaNo cash donations collected in the final week of events.
That comes to an astounding $800 in cash donations for 2011. We've never before had such an amazing year for generosity in Toronto! Thank you!
