(50k!) The fifty-kay PAR-TAY!

Holy.
CRAP.

I can't believe it. This is a book, and I wrote it. It's done and it's mine. It has my name on it. I don't think I have any words left for anything else.

Through unfriendly work schedules, broken computers, sketchy internet and a plot that only makes sense when something is blowing up, I've done it. We've gone into this month as clerks, librarians, office workers, students, bums and children: November has ground us up and remade us into writers. No matter what else we've done and have not done, we can face all the disapproval contained in the world with the undeniable ammunition that we. Wrote. A. Book.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to get pretty drunk.

Cheers,
Nicola Postorino,
Writer. Finally.

Re: (50k!) The fifty-kay PAR-TAY!

Hello fellow novelists,

Despite a pretty paltry effort on my part last year, this year I persevered and wrote a novel! I have struggled through the last 10,000 words, validated my word count and printed off my certificate. I feel tired, bewildered and relieved that I am actually finished. It may not be the next War and Peace, but who actually liked that book anyway?

I am a little at a loss on what to do now. Whenever I have had a free moment this past month I have been writing, and now that's over. I think first on the agenda is taking a nap. Then I'll go and get the life I've been missing for the past 30 days.

Congratulations to all those who finished and all those who were brave enough to try.

Until next year!

I have just finished today, and I'm pretty proud of myself. 50 thousand words in less than a month! Wow. Plus I don't think the story is half-bad; I am considering publishing after significant editing for grammar, and content.

It's quite an accomplishment to finish!

My story's not quite finished yet, but I validated today! I'm hoping to forge ahead and get the last bit of the story written by the end of Wednesday, so that I can actually be 'done and done' within November, but at least I've gotten the magic 50K!

Re: (50k!) The fifty-kay PAR-TAY!

Well, I did it.

I've only killed 3 or 4 people due to zombie attacks, and only about a dozen or so have been infected, so there's a lot of styory left, but that's okay.

I think this year I used a lot LESS of my usual cheats, like dream sequences or characters repeating themselves, or everybody always calling everybody by their full names, so that's a victory.

Even though I've won before, I'm really proud of myself for doing it this time. For a few private reasons it's been a challenging month, and today I've met several goals all at once, so this is excellent.

I mean, I'm a 34 year old man and I'm tearing up. Gosh darn it.

Good luck to all still working and congrats to everyone who makes it!!

And a HUGE congrats to everyone who tried, and stuck through the month even if the word count isn;t there. This is SO worth it, whether you right 50k words or 50 words, so go feel a little proud of yourself.

Re: (50k!) The fifty-kay PAR-TAY!

I hit it tonight — validated at the Final Countdown session, though I was reasonably sure the buggy Linux beta of Scrivener had inflated my word count somehow, because it showed it as being much higher than I thought it should have been. So I kept writing up to midnight, and then checked my word count again in the Mac version of Scrivener when I got home -- and I was just a wee bit shy of 50k! Augh!

Well, I made up the difference quickly enough, but I'm still not sure if I really ought to have that "winner" bar under my name, since it looks like it was a technical glitch that made me "win" when I did. All I was trying to do was check what my actual word count was, because I didn't trust Linux!Scrivener's project target stats, and the next thing I knew the web site was proclaiming me a winner and people were throwing glitter on me...

I don't know, maybe I'm worrying about it too much. I probably would have hit 50k before midnight even if compiling from Scrivener had worked properly -- the only reason I was a couple of hundred words short was because I slacked off for a bit after validating. But still... I would have preferred a less ambiguous win.

Oh well. I suppose the most important thing is that I did write 50,000 words. And will keep writing until the novel's actually done, however long that takes...
