I need help with a surname for one of my characters. He's a white South African photographer who's from just outside of Cape Town. Wondering if we have any South Africans around who could help me with some common Afrikaner surnames.

I don't know how common it is over there, but my family's got some Koekemoer's.
I'll check on facebook for some others.

Joubert
De Swardt
Diedericks
Van Der Linde
Groenewald

Those are just a couple from my Aunt's friends list.

Thanks! I've been trying to come up with a good surname for Jake but I think either Groenewald or De Swardt could work really well. :)

I am trying to decide now if Jacob (or Jake as he calls himself) Groenewald sounds better than Hannes Groenewald. Hmmm.

Jacob/Jake is more accessible, I think, and you could have fun with the formal vs. informal permutations

I was thinking the same thing. I spoke with a Swedish friend and she kept insisting Hannes was a name only used in Sweden. But I once knew a guy from J-burg who was called Hannes. Well, I have decided to go with Jacob "Jake" Groenewald...I think it has a nice ring to it. And my MC finally met him in the driveway of her deceased grandmother's house...and he's both annoyed and intrigued her so we're off to a good start. :)

That is a good start. When I teach improv, I tell students to always start in the middle, and to have a searing point of view about other characters in the scene. I teach it as "f*&k or kill." Which one do you want to do to the other person? Of course, there are degrees and permutations, but those are the base instincts

Sort_of_Bookish I love this. I am also an improviser and I have a feeling it is going to help my improv even more than my story. (KimGM I am in Cape Town btw)

Glad to pass that nugget on. I think doing improv makes one much more free and willing to take risks as a writer. This is a LOOOOOONG shot, but have you ever improvised or taken classes in Cape Town with Marijn Vissers, Bart von Heel or any other improvisers from TheatreSports in Amsterdam?

Ooh good! I need to pick your head a bit. :) My character, Jake, is trying to describe for the female MC about where he lives in Cape Town. I have this idea that he is from the West Cape, from either Stellenbosch or Paarl, and that his parents have a farm with a small vineyard attached to it. How long would it take to drive from Cape Town to either Stellenbosch or Paarl?

I may need to pick brains soon for some Cape Town info. I have never been to South Africa, but lately I've been working with people who've either worked in South Africa or are from there. WOrking with two copywriters from Cape Town area so they've been filling me in a bit.
