Hey, I'm going to be staying in SF for 4 nights around the NOWD weekend, and I was wondering if anybody else wanted to meet up for group activities? A few ideas off the top of my head:
- The Sunday morning breakfast we had last year was lots of fun, I'd love to do that again. - I was thinking of heading over on BART to Berkeley and visit the OLL on Monday afternoon; we could make a group trip out of it! - Maybe hit the Exploratorium or some other museum?
I was definitely looking to the Sunday morning group breakfast ever since hearing about it... whenever I heard about it. I'd definitely be in for that.
I can't commit to anything else yet thanks to other possible plans that keep cropping up, but I will be gatecrashing OLL HQ at some point. Not on Monday though, since I'm leaving Monday morning.
Hmm... well, I'm not sure if it's that much fun to gatecrash the office on Saturday or Sunday as most of the OLL peeps will be coming into the city those days - Sunday for the dinner itself, and Saturday I suspect there might be a 'rehearsal dinner' for out of town guests again.
And this year I'm flying in on Friday. Maybe there can be multiple gatecrash groups, depending on schedules.
I'm realizing that I probably won't have time to do as much in the Bay area as I'd like. Well, there's always 2012!
I'm realizing the same thing about not having as much time as I'd like. I thought a Friday morning arrival and Monday afternoon departure would be plenty of time, but plans keep cropping up. NOWD itself, gatecrashing OLL HQ, meeting up with various Wrimos (and now non-Wrimos)...
Gatecrash update: The office will be closed on Monday so all staff can recover from the Big Night, so I may not be able to make it at all - unless maybe we do it on Saturday before people start heading down for the rehearsal dinner?
Soulstruck wrote:Can someone elaborate on the Saturday night rehearsal dinner, or link me to a page? I don't remember it being mentioned on the NoWD info page.
I guess that's my cue. I don't know if it's listed on a page, but here's the relevant detail from one of last year's NOWD newsletters - the one from the Friday before the Big Night:
Sarah Mackey wrote:Speaking of beautiful downtown San Francisco and enjoying each other’s company, we thought it would be nice to have a little bit of extra time to mix and mingle, especially for those Wrimos who have come from afar to the Night of Writing Dangerously. So on Saturday night, from 7-10pm, the OLL Staff will be at Schroeder's German Restaurant and Pub, at 240 Front Street in San Francisco. We’d love to see you there and have a chance to chat a little! If you’d like to join us for some or all of the evening, please just shoot me a quick email so we have a ballpark number for how many to expect.
And it sounds like it's going to be at Schroeder's this year too, a little bird with the initials LG told me. :D It was a really great time last year, lots of good food and fun conversation, and no pressure to - you know, write anything!
Okay, how about the Sunday morning breakfast? Last year it was Lori's dinner at Sutter street and Powell. I don't remember what time people started to arrive.
I'd love to do breakfast some morning(s)! That diner was nice, but awfully cramped. Does anyone have suggestions on someplace we might be able to get a large group in without stress that we won't all fit?
And YAY for the Friday night Mixt-n-Mingle! If it happens this year again, Dad and I will definitely be there!
We are planning some other activities for the weekend as well - I'll try and get the details nailed down ASAP so we can let you all know! The Saturday night meet-and-greet is for sure happening, and I think Tavia's got a couple of other things up her sleeve.
The office is indeed closed Monday, and nobody will be around Saturday or Sunday, I'm afraid. (We'll be too busy elsewhere!)
I'll try and have an update on the extra activities as soon as I get a moment!
I'd love to know this sooner than later; I'm trying to plan things with (gasp) new non-Wrimos in my life who probably don't yet get just how big a deal NOWD and NaNo are to me. But they'll find out. Oh, they'll find out. :D
Yes!! The Out of Towners thingy on Saturday night and the Sunday breakfast last year were awesome (even if I did go to the wrong restaurant location, initially, Sunday morning...). I'll be in town from Thursday to Monday afternoon. Also, if there are other out-of-towners that are up for gatecrashing some write ins, that'd be cool. I couldn't make it to any SF write ins last year, so I just sat in coffee shops or the library and had a Write In of One. :)
Funny you mention that! Sunday mornings from 10-2 we have a write-in at Pegasus Books on the corner of Shattuck and Durant (about a mile north of the OLL). If you're not sightseeing in the City you should come write!
Thanks very much for the offer! I'm not sure how long the Sunday morning breakfast will go, but I think I like the idea of heading from there out to Berkeley on the BART and writing. It'll be a good way of making sure that I'm in striking distance of ringing the bell. ;)
According to Google Maps, that bookstore is approx three and a half blocks south of the Downtown Berkeley BART station, yeah?
Correct! I'm the ML but somebody else has done the logistics for writing there, and apparently we're allowed to bring our own fuel so you can stop at one of the many coffee shops or froyo places in the neighborhood.
It takes about a half-hour to get there from downtown SF, depending on how the trains are timed (service is slower in this area during the weekend). Hope we get to see you!
Google Maps is so great. I punched in Lori's Diner to Shattuck and Durant, by public transit on a Sunday morning. It asked me which Lori's Diner, then gave several different times that I could make the trip in thirty-seven minutes - seven of which were walking to the nearest BART station from the diner. :)
I'm coming into town early this year - Wednesday night - so I can actually enjoy the City a bit... didn't get to explore much last year. I also didn't make it to the Saturday night dinner, but the Sunday breakfast was a lot of fun. I'm definitely looking forward to it again this year - and any other get-togethers we can manage... :-)
Cool! I haven't managed to make it to SF so early, usually because my birthday is in the way - I kinda like to spend the day with family here in Ontario, as opposed to thousands of miles from home. Personal choice. ;)
Speaking of which... I'm already wondering when NOWD 2012 will be held. US Thanksgiving will be late next year, so if the dinner is again held on the Sunday before Thanksgiving, it should be November 25th I think. That should let me come in earlier, and spend more time in the Bay area, yay!
Oh this thread is great. I'll be traveling by myself to San Fran from the east coast, and I was afraid I wouldn't know what to do! I still am not sure when I'm coming in or where I'm sleeping though.
I'm organizing the Great Train Escape for all of us Southern California Wrimos on the train route to Oakland.
I know a group of people plan to walk the Golden Gate Bridge at 7am on Saturday. A few more people are planning to take the free tour at Grace Cathedral from 12:30 - 2pm on Sunday.
Once we know the details of the OLL evening meet and greet and ML afternoon tea party, we're going to try to coordinate a tour of Alcatraz. Possibly the 4:35pm evening tour. It will put us back at Pier 33 by 7:15pm and then we're not too far form the OLL Sat. evening party if it's the same local as last time.
I'd love to join you all, unfortunately, my college excursions have pulled me far from my California home. I'll be there for the Night of Writing Dangerously in spirit.
Group activities in San Francisco?

Sunday morning breakfast, sure :D
And gatecrashing OLL sounds fun, but I'm not sure what time I'm leaving Monday.

Count me in for the Sunday morning breakfast. :-D
Can someone elaborate on the Saturday night rehearsal dinner, or link me to a page? I don't remember it being mentioned on the NoWD info page.

Looks pretty likely that I will be able to attend the Saturday night meet and greet. Thanks!

Oooh, this is good to know before making plans to meet up with others. I may get very little writing done that weekend.

Re: Group activities in San Francisco?
And hey, bright idea - why limit ourselves to just Sunday? ;) Anybody interested in having breakfast together Saturday morning and/or Monday?

I'll be attending any local write-ins that I can, which would mostly be anything that they plan for Saturday morning or Monday evening I suppose.
Maybe we can plan special NOWD-er write-ins! :)
