Do we get to ring the bell if we've already reached 50k at NOWD?

I'd strategically plan to reach 50k at NOWD, but I'm one of those overachievers. So do we get to ring the bell if we're already there or if we reach a multiple of 50k at the event? Because I've been looking forward to ringing that bell for a long time, and reaching a multiple of 50k is something I might be able to plan.

Hmm... I'm not sure if anything like that's come up either of the two times that I've been there. But I suspect that if you went to one of the OLL staff during the event, and said "I just reached 100k, can I ring the bell?", you might be allowed. :D Not so sure about the case where you reached 50k just a few hours before getting to the ballroom.

Sarah, can we get an official ruling in here?

Sorry, no. The bell is for that moment when you cross the 50K line at the Write-a-thon and become an official NaNoWriMo winner. If you crossed it before the event, you get the satisfaction of victory, but no bell. Sorry!

As a previoius bell-ringer for 50K (2009) I can tell you all it's AWESOME to get to ring the bell! Hope to be able to ring it again this year.

Well, there's a bell sitting on the speaker's podium in the banquet hall, and if you reach a total of 50,000 words at the event, you go over and ring the bell, and everybody stops writing for a moment to give you a little round of applause, and Sarah comes over when she gets a minute and gives you a free Nanowrimo t-shirt and a paper crown to celebrate your awesomeness. It's really very cool stuff. :-)

Yeah, it's very awesome. I did it last year and I'm shooting to do it this year, too. :-)

What about YWP participants who have lower word counts? I'm planning to bring my daughter as my guest and her goal is 15,000 words. If she hits that at NoWD can she ring the bell?

Sarah Mackey

I'm going to say yes! It's the winner's bell, and she will have won YWP at that point. I bet she'd get a very large round of applause!

I'm planning to hit 75k at the end of NaNo, which puts me at 50k on the day of NoWD. Sounds like I'll have to wait to hit the 50k mark till Dinner! Bummer but I'm excited!

My NaNo goal is to hit 50k while at NOWD, solely to ring the bell. I'm assuming the day before and day of the event I will get very little done, because I'm meeting friends in San Francisco and we're bound to accomplish next to no actual writing until we have to haha. I'm at 18k now, so we'll see how the next two weeks-ish go, if I have to hustle or slow down :p

I want to go to that some year!!!! Unfortunately, I'm thirteen years old (but I'm still participating in the 50k NaNo!) and I live in Connecticut. If I continue doing NaNo, I'm going to try and go to that one year!

I will be there, but wont get the ring the bell alas. I am still way behind. Still, I expect it to be a fun an inspiring night. One that will help me push towards my goal.
