I have a gay sex scene and it is really important to the plot of the character.
I read a lot of slash but cause I'm not a guy I have no idea how to write it, I only really understand sex from a girls point of view which makes this really hard, I've tried this [writing gay sex] before but it always turns out super shit.

I found the most erotic gay fection to be written by women. Have you ever read K.A. Mitchell's books? She's phenomenal! And she only writes MxM. She would be a great reference for a scene done well, and she has quite a few books out there (available in ep-format as well as print).
I've found that the best way to write an erotic scene with two male characters is to primarily use the bottom's POV. It's just been my experience, when posting my pieces on the Web where you get reviews, that my readers are mostly looking for this type of POV. Strangely enough, I find my het scenes harder to write. LOL!
What in particular do you find is your sticking point?
On this post I bought Regularly Scheduled Life by K.A. Mitchell and am extremely disappointed. I'm around page 160 now and am yawning, it's actually a drag reading the past 80 or so pages.
For one thing the sex is totally unerotic, very repetitive, uninspired and described a bit like the manual for setting up IKEA shelves. It definitely is the most non-erotic sex I have read in a long time.
For another thing I cannot connect either with the characters or their problems. They behave like a bitching couple, incapable of talking with each other, endowed with very poor empathy, rather shallow. The problems they do have with the school shooting, which were such a magnificent possibility to delve into characterising and angst, are absolutely petty. What angers me even more is the consistent refusal to at least try to touch the causes of school shootings with the tip of a finger, even though we do have a jock as a teacher here.
In short, no depth to what is happening, no depth to the characters and absolutely unerotic, unimaginative, nonsensual sex. Which makes me wonder why you recommend her. Is that really the best out there? In all seriousness I've read much better fanfiction than that.
I have (stopped reading), around page 200 when it really was getting the same old same and not any better. I am often a bit bloody-minded, and I usually hate to give up on books, but sometimes it's indeed too little of a good thing. After 20 pages managing to contain 8 sex scenes, none of which were hot, I gave up.
What makes me wonder about this is that her books get those raving reviews on Amazon. I know I am difficult when it comes to BDSM-themed erotica, but anything else I usually am very willing to like, as long as the characters have depth and the sex is sensual and has a meaning (for the characters). So it's not that I think I am that hard to please as a reader, yet I have real trouble seeing anything hot and juicy, while everyone else seems to do.
Are these Amazon reviews finagled? Or what is the reason for that difference I wonder?
Well, it's difficult to say without being too explicit, so I'll stick to some main points (moderators please edit at your discretion if necessary):
1) There can never be too much lubrication used, ever. The sort of lubrication boys can use is different from what girls can use. Which isn't to say girl's can't use it at all, you just don't want it touching your female parts, and if that's so necessary, it makes it less appealing to use at all.
2) Relaxation is important. If you open your mouth, it will relax your other orifices more. Good trick to know. Nothing can be forced pleasantly.
3) There is a "ring" to get past, which widens with relaxation, and calm, caring, persistence. This can break though, and once gone cannot be replaced very well... another issues than can be run into is "blow out," where the insides get pulled outside on exit... :( (It's amazing how many prosthetic surgeries are done on this area)
4) The prostate gland is stimulated via anal sex in men, and acts as a G-spot. This is probably why women, while they can enjoy anal sex, never get to enjoy it as much as men do.
5) A gay male friend of mine said (and others in the conversation agreed) that it is akin to the best bowel movement ever... I have to imagine then that having a prostate makes that more enjoyable for guys too?
Oh, a mix of good and bad here: 1) While lube is important, I use the same types of condom-safe lube for both gay and heterosexual sex.
2) Relaxation is certainly important.
3-5) Those problems are, quite thankfully, fairly rare. Anal sex is also not the only thing we do together, and doesn't happen every time or in every relationship.
3-5) These aren't problems (though a couple notes re: safety/roughness have been described). Issues are not rare, but thankfully don't happen to everyone. (3) A note about an anatomical area, not good or bad, just there, and something to note. (4) Yay, men have prostates, and they have cool uses! More men should use them. (5) Just a note about how anal sex has been described. Not a generality, just one oberservation shared between friends,
...and I doubt anyone imagined that the couple points I raised were the whole of gay male sex and intimacy. This was not intended as a manual of sexual style, nor does it allude to meaning that anal sex is to be practiced in every relationship, or on a set schedule.
I can't edit, but I did want to revise what I said because it came in a way that wasn't intended, and I miscommunicated.
Most namely, I think we're on the same page re: rarity of issues. I read what you said as meaning that you thought it was really rare, where both issues have occurred to men in my life, so it didn't seem so rare an occurance to me, and I heard a doctor mention on the radio how often that sort of plastic surgery is done. I didn't catch that you said "fairly" rare, and I agree. I mentioned those issues only to put into perspective the type of problems that can occur if you're not careful.
Also-- I read #3-5 as being "problems," in your response whereas you probably only meant the painful issues in #3?
My apologies if I came off snarky or rude. It wasn't my intention.
If you have gay friends and you feel comfortable doing so, ask them to read what you've written and provide some "real-world" perspectives on what would and wouldn't "fly" during an actual gay sex scene. You can qualify it by saying you don't want to get overly personal or pry into their own sex lives, but just want an objective point of view. Usually, people will be cool with giving you some constructive crit as to where you're going astray. :p
Speaking from personal experience here. If you have any burning questions that you can't get answered you can nanomail me.
To begin, a lot of gay couples don't have anal sex at all, because it doesn't appeal. In this case oral sex proceeds much like between straight couples. Some gay couples use condoms, primarily to avoid STIs. But even if they know they have no such infections, they might use them anyway to reduce the amount of cleanup required afterwards. It depends on the person. You have to go slowly with anal sex; just trying to stick it in there will be very painful and can cause serious injury (which was my problem with brokeback mountain. Just licking your fingers and rutting away wouldn't work.) The most common method is for the top to loosen the bottom up by inserting one finger, then a second when he's used to one, then usually moving onto the penis when he's used to two. You can use water-based or silicon-based lubricant. The former dries out after some time and may need to be topped up, the latter is really annoying to clean up. The enjoyment from bottoming can come from the sexualisation of the ideal (getting off on the fact that you're doing it) and stimulation of the prostate (which is a small nub that's less than a finger's distance from the anus. The top doesn't need a large penis to give this stimulation to his partner) and also the feeling of "fullness" can be nice for some guys. It's (as I'm sure you could tell) an extremely intimate act, and the level of connection the bottom feels with the top can be thrilling. I haven't used them myself, but poppers are quite popular. They're an inhaled drug that completely relax the muscles of the abdomen, which makes penetration a lot easier. However, they can have bad side-effects. Wikipedia will have more information if you're interested.
Always think of one more thing after you post. This sort of assumes you're going for realism rather than just masturbation fodder though.
One thing I've seen a lot of people complain about with this kind of fiction is that the bottom is always in the perfect state for having sex. In the real world a man's bowels and the accessibility of a partner, not to mention libido, don't always match up. It's not exactly sexy for the bottom to have to say "I don't think we can tonight" but it could add another dimension to your scenes as well as some realism.
Thank you for this! It really helps! I've had a lot of questions about this subject but no one I feel cpomfortable enough with to say, "Tell me all about what sex is like for a gay man." (In fact, I'm pretty sure I might offend most of myfriends if I asked that one.) Would it be all right if I Nanomailed you any follow up questions?
OMG esquirella! :) I hope I wasn't implying that you should ask your gay friends to tell you "what gay sex is all about"--I sure hope my advice didn't come across that way. I admit that I, too, would be uncomfortable asking even my close gay friends in that level of graphic detail. I guess what I'm suggesting is maybe draft out a few scenes that you intend to include in your fiction, and run them by some trusted friends--they don't even need to be about "sex" per se, but even relationships. Just say, hey, can you read this and let me know if this is realistic and plausible? Just that kinda thing. :)
LOL! I didn't think you were telling us to do that. No worries. I was just trying to say that I have nowhere to turn for help. But after this thread, I now know a few places to go for research.

Thanks for this link! I've been trying to find this page ever since I first stumbled across it as a wee slash fan and didn't think ahead enough to bookmark it. Still some of the best advice for writing gay sex I've come across.
If you're over eighteen, I'd suggest watching some gay porn. Obviously, visual pornography isn't always representative of real relationships or real sex (it tends to be more acrobatic and involve more positions than most people bother with, and it may focus on acts that look good on-screen but don't necessarily happen that much behind closed doors), but it's a good place to start, particularly if you choose the amateur genre. Also, a lot of the advice here is focusing on anal sex, but the focus on that tends to come from heteronormative expectations of what constitutes sex, which doesn't always apply to men who have sex with other men.
Thanks everyone with your comments, they've been really helpful, I am going to talk to my friend who is an exabitionist and wont have any problem talking to me about such things.
My characters wont use lube or things like that because of the time periode but other comments were helpful, going to use the poppers idea that was awesome.
Ack, but lube is needed if you want to write about realistic anal intercourse. (if you're writing about anal, that is, but I assume since you wrote about including poppers)
Sorry, I just get really squicked out when people skip that part, because even if it's fiction or fantasy or whatever, I can't help but to think how much it'll hurt for the characters.
Even if the time period is something else than modern, there are always substitutes for lube like lard, grease, oil, etc. And a great amount of spit is better than nothing.
Yeah, my novel is set in a fictional land that's something akin to Turkey in the 18th century, so there's no "lube" really to speak of. So I have them using scented oils and balms and stuff like that.
Actually lube is NOT always necessary. That is a thing which became a "must have" with (mainly US) fanfiction.
The anus is coated with a mucous membrane, much like the inside of the mouth and the vagina, and for that matter the surface of the glans/upper part of the uncut penis. They are called "mucous membranes" because all of them, including the anus are capable of secreting mucus of various consistency and are naturally moist.
It is possible to insert an uncut penis (and move it in the required motion for coitus) anally and have it ride solely on the benefit of natural mucus and pre-come. Been there, done that, not just once, watched it happen between males as well, no pain, no harm. All it takes is full functionality of all tissues (including the foreskin) and patience.
It is also possible for cut males, though it appears to be not exactly as easy and surefire (according to cut friends of the family so to speak) due to the same reasons why many cut men need lube to masturbate and to have intercourse with normally lubricating women - namely that a) the cut penis is dry (entirely) on the outside, b) the cut penis moves less within its skin sheath than an uncut penis and c) it pulls the moiture outside of the relevant body opening, drying things out very rapidly.
Lubeless sex can cause issues, including anal fissures, that are extremely unpleasant and painful. There is no such thing as too much lube (though also, especially if the bottom hasn't taken steps, lube can cause things to get very messy).
That said... if the bottom has cleaned themselves out analingus isn't out of order both to help the bottom relax the necessary parts and to get them very... well, wet.
Small anecdote on the side here (because it was quite amusing what a mega-packet it cost them), when Walmart expanded into several (continental) European countries they did little market research on non-food items and not just tried to sell the same kinds of products they used to sell in the USA to European customers, they also ordered and stocked the same amounts of these items.
As a result all these supermarkets sat on hundreds of tons of practically unsaleable lube, it was one of their seriously expensive mistakes. At the time a lot of Walmart-unfriendly people considered it major fun. In most European countries 99% of the males are intact and lube used to be largely a curiosity item bought in drugstores or sex shops (it does sell a bit more since safer sex and condoms became ubiquitous, but an uncut penis is easier on membranes even when clothed in latex).
As it can be safely said, that there aren't less people engaging in anal sex, whether gay or just loving backdoor sex, that goes to tell as well.
I've read period peices and they always use something. Goose or bear grease or even butter to ease the way. (Sented oils is good because I'm sure that bear grease does not smell so great. I also say OUCH when an author does NOT use something in lubes place.
Luckily my alien lover makes is own lube, yeah!. *0>0*
Well, you can either PM gay writers (happy to answer questions here), or it could be worth checking out writing written by gay men which have sex scenes. I know a few besides me if you'd like some ideas.
I don't know it this works for everyone else but I can write gay sex scenes by reading them. Tons of them. Try nifty.org, which has tons of gay erotica or gayauthors.org if your looking for more novel-ish stuff and not just stories (but you might have to dig deep on there to find actual sex scenes). I don't know if it will be easy for you to put what you read into your own words and to really understand what's going on but it works for me considering, I'm a girl who's straight and a virgin but can write gay fiction & gay sex scenes. So, again, read, read, read, so you can get an understanding as to how it works and how to put it into descriptive and erotic words.
For the couple in my book, talking is just as important as the actual "intercourse." It releases tension and builds trust. They talk about what they want and don't want, and the one who's new to sex asks a lot of questions. (ie: Why do you shave your chest hair? Answer: I like the look.) But it makes him feel comfortable, and it ends up working very well.
I also like including laughter in sex scenes. In one scene my bottom gets ticklish and can't stop laughing. Needless to say, he feels much better when his partner laughs with him rather than growls that sex isn't about laughter.
That's exactly like my characters, Halalisani is so curious about everything, he's very smart but sometimes is so nieve. Thank's I will definitely take that into consideration.
Oh man, I'm so sad to hear this. I hope he knew how many people appreciated his site. I'm sure he's responsible for a good number of slash fics over the years.

Even if the time period is something else than modern, there are always substitutes for lube like lard, grease, oil, etc. And a great amount of spit is better than nothing.
Re: Gay sex???
Yeah, my novel is set in a fictional land that's something akin to Turkey in the 18th century, so there's no "lube" really to speak of. So I have them using scented oils and balms and stuff like that.
Re: Gay sex???
wouldn't scented oils sting because of the perfume used
Re: Gay sex???
Hmm, not sure...the oils they're using are scented with natural things like rosepetals and the like.
Re: Gay sex???
Re: Gay sex???
Lubeless sex can cause issues, including anal fissures, that are extremely unpleasant and painful. There is no such thing as too much lube (though also, especially if the bottom hasn't taken steps, lube can cause things to get very messy).
That said... if the bottom has cleaned themselves out analingus isn't out of order both to help the bottom relax the necessary parts and to get them very... well, wet.
Re: Gay sex???
Re: Gay sex???
I've read period peices and they always use something. Goose or bear grease or even butter to ease the way. (Sented oils is good because I'm sure that bear grease does not smell so great. I also say OUCH when an author does NOT use something in lubes place.
Luckily my alien lover makes is own lube, yeah!. *0>0*
Re: Gay sex???
I wrote about viking sex last year's NaNo and they ended up using lard and spit. It had me cackling for a few paragraphs, that's for sure.
Oh, and just a side note. According to a friend of mine, bear grease is apparently the best natural lube one can use.
Re: Gay sex???
Well, you can either PM gay writers (happy to answer questions here), or it could be worth checking out writing written by gay men which have sex scenes. I know a few besides me if you'd like some ideas.
Cheers

Re: Gay sex???

Re: Gay sex???
Re: Gay sex???
For the couple in my book, talking is just as important as the actual "intercourse." It releases tension and builds trust. They talk about what they want and don't want, and the one who's new to sex asks a lot of questions. (ie: Why do you shave your chest hair? Answer: I like the look.) But it makes him feel comfortable, and it ends up working very well.
I also like including laughter in sex scenes. In one scene my bottom gets ticklish and can't stop laughing. Needless to say, he feels much better when his partner laughs with him rather than growls that sex isn't about laughter.
Re: Gay sex???
That's exactly like my characters, Halalisani is so curious about everything, he's very smart but sometimes is so nieve. Thank's I will definitely take that into consideration.
