What exactly is erotic fiction?

How do you make an actual story with an actual plot?
What is considered erotic fiction?
What is NOT erotic fiction?

When I think of erotica I think of a 10k or less worded short story about s/he meets him/her and unf unf the end.

Well, that's certainly not offensive to all the erotica writers here.

Re: What exactly is erotic fiction?

My latest effort is currently at 250,000 words :-), but I agree 10,000 can be a good length particularly if it's just about delivering one key idea or scenario.

>>>How do you make an actual story with an actual plot?

Plots should exist in erotica as any other fiction, they just have more sex!

>>> What is considered erotic fiction?

It's the understanding between an author and his/her readers and why they are reading. It doesn't need to be a constant sex scenes, but needs to deliver something erotic on a regular basis.

>>>What is NOT erotic fiction?
Obviously mainstream writing on one side and porn fiction on the other (i.e. the latter tends to be more graphic, detailed and relentless than erotic stories. But there's plenty of totally filthy long stories out there!

I think erotica includes full-characters(like developed characters), a half-decent story, and graphic sex, love, rape, whatever floats your boat. Just make it a bit artistic...

And erotica is more about the sex, while romance is more about being romantic candlelight diners and long walks on the beach.

Re: What exactly is erotic fiction?

I've been trying to sell a story recently that I thought was erotic romance, because two characters who care about each other but will never be in a relationship have sex, and while it's possible that is still erotic fiction, it's not erotic romance. I've gotten three very nice, personal rejections inviting me to send more work in, but ultimately turning down the story because it didn't quite fit within the guidelines of what they were looking to publish.

Re: What exactly is erotic fiction?

Bit simplistic view of romance there...

Technically speaking, genre romance has two crucial elements. 1. A plot that focuses on the developing relationship between the two main characters. 2. A "Happily Ever After" or "Happy For Now" ending.

Erotica is more about the sexual journey of one character. It tends to be very character driven, but it's not always as explicit as one might think. I've actually read erotica that had closed-door sex but still was very much erotica because of the plot.

Somewhere in the gray area between erotica and romance is erotic romance. The romantic journey is sexual in nature but it's still about the relationship and has the happy ending.

Plotless sex for the sake of sex is probably leaning more toward written porn.
