Children in erotica

Just curious what everyone's opinions are about this topic. Do you think it's all right to have child characters in an erotic story? Not participating in anything, mind you (oh GOD no), but I mean like...as a son or daughter of one of the adults.

For example, in a story I'm thinking of writing after this, I'd like the MMC to have a 10-year-old daughter - and I'm just curious if you think that would suck all the sexy out of the erotica. Would it be weird to read a sex scene and then in the next chapter show him interacting with his daughter? I just really don't want it to come across as creepy. I want him to come across as a sympathetic single father.

There were children in my novel, I just didn't let them get anywhere near the sexy parts of the story. They were just kind of a fact, and they appeared once in a while at special, non-erotic events.

Just keep them at least a few pages away from any adult activities, I'd say.

I think it can become a 'different' kind of story, deeper and with more meat. Not a bad thing, just different...

and as above.

I've read several published erotic stories where one character has a child or very young sibling he/she is responsible for. I don't think it would be considered weird, since presumably you're writing a novel about fully-realized characters who have lives outside the bedroom. :)

For the record, one of the characters in my NaNo novel is the guardian of two teen siblings (he's the oldest by seven years) and the fact that he's had to take on the responsibility for more-or-less raising them since he was barely a legal adult himself is pretty pivotal to his character. He wouldn't be anything like the same person without that subplot. If that's true of your MMC as well, definitely keep the child.

I'd have to agree with the above. And add, it's entirely possible that that aspect of the character, any caring and responsibility he shows, might well be a turn on for the love (or sex) interest(s) if they know about it.

Yeah, that was what I wanted to illustrate. My FMC is initially going to have a very low opinion of the MMC, but when she finally sees him with his daughter, she can't help but be moved. :D

Cool. I like to think I have some knowledge of the female psyche. Even if I don't put it to as much use as I should. XD

I think that people who have sex in books are allowed to have children. I mean, the two so often go together in the real world.

Well, I hope so, because my FMC and MMC are parents of two little girls. And those daughters came from somewhere ...
That said, I don't think my story is necessarily erotica, more X-rated romance, because the sex is not the focal point. I just don't 'fade to black' when my MCs get it on. I don't think it sucks out the sexiness, in fact I think one of the best scenes of my novel is a quickie when they were having a mad romp while trying to be finished before their daughters came in from playing in the field. I think it lasted some 3 minutes from start to finish (the start being the start of the actual intercourse) and the MMC was pretty proud he didn't last at all. LOL

As of today, if you were considering even having a child in a story (not as a participant) think again. PayPal has really cracked down on publishers across the board. Erotica with children in it at all, as well as "barely legal" (18-19 year olds in minor settings such as still in school) are biting the dust everywhere.

That's really weird.

I avoid children in my stories as well as in real life!
