Writing Erotica in Public Spaces

My favourite place to write is local coffee shops. Usually it provides for a change of scenery and comfy chairs and most importantly caffeinated beverages. Anyways being an erotica writer I find myself writing sex scenes in odd spaces. Sometimes in public, you know the time where you dim your screen, make sure no one is behind you and type furiously away. So, where's the most public place you've "done it"?

I write at work a lot. Just open up a couple of windows on the computer - the little tiny one with what I'm writing, and a bigger one with what I'm pretending to be working on. Whenever anyone comes by, quickly change windows, cover up the naughty one, and then scroll to a new place in tbe pretend work window so it doesn't look like you're always in the same place. Oh, and occasionally do some real work so they don't suspect you sit around and do nothing all day.

I've done it at school before. I was supposed to be working on a paper but I had an idea in my head. So I pulled up another document and started typing away, whenever my teacher would walk by I would pull up my paper and type some of it or search for information on the internet. My friend was next to me and looked at me annoyed whenever I would cover it up. Later I learned they really liked what I was writing and wanted a copy of it.

Bus station, sandwiched between two old people. Well, I had an half hour wait and an idea that was begging to be written down, then half an hour on the bus to polish it off. On a train while someone was sat next to me. while on a plane to spain, Sat next to my younger brother who didn't take any notice of me. Hmm, seems like I love to write on moving things

Only once so far in Starbucks (other coffee outlets are available). it did feel a bit odd. Otherwise it's in my living room or in my bed (not as sexy as it sounds - dog on feet, empty space beside me and hot chocolate in the nightstand. Although I do regularly start smutty fan fiction on a secret group on Facebook and write while others post comments about it.

Campus libraries, certainly. At work, scribbling ideas on scratch paper and tucking them into a pocket (or sock. You'd never believe how hard it is to get character notes out of a "secure" government building), at my in-laws house. The absolute worst would have been the division computer in the shared office onboard my first ship. Two guys playing Halo, one reading a book, two more watching a movie on the Chief's laptop, and me, typing furiously away. I do my best, dirtiest thinking while I'm at work.

I write at school quite often, both by hand and on computers in the classes that have them. It's not really awkward for me, aside from the fact that my peers tend to take extreme interest in me when I'm furiously writing/typing away in lieu of doing my school work. I write in coffee shops, in the car, anywhere in public, really.

I'm so glad others have admitted to writing at work. I tend to have lots of down-time at work, and I usually have to be on the computer for work-related reasons anyways, so after I finish that stuff I take some time to write. I've done my whole day's words at work before. But to me, that's not *too* uncomfortable/etc, because I do have a cubicle to myself and it's sort of out of the way. The worse was during Camp NaNo. I had an all-day trip for art class that included 6 hours roundtrip in a van with 7 other people. If I didn't write in that van, I had NO time to write that day. So I took my laptop with me, and I wrote the entire day's words while sitting in between two other art students. Thankfully no one questioned or looked too closely at the content, but it was awkward anyways (and awkward just trying to type on a laptop in a bumpy van...).

I write quite often at Starbucks. At the closest one to my house, I write in a corner, quite often being seen by the baristas. In the last year, three have become curious as to what I'm writing. I've shared my "Safe" writing with them, though recently the hot redhead that my wife crushes on has read some of my "naughty bits." She's one of my newest fans.

I spend a lot of time writing at Panera--when I'm doing sex scenes, I generally try to make sure my back is to a wall or corner. I had an inspiration pic up on my screen the other day and closed my laptop without closing the pic. I had to do some quick clicking when I got to Panera and powered back up. I write at work, too, and I guess the most public place I've done it was in a meeting with my team. Meeting notes? Not quite....

I am with the coffee shop crowd. But mostly I write at home and then when I am in line picking up my daughter from school. I am not much for mingling with parents, my humor is a bit crass for them so I keep to my books.

I usually write by hand in my school's library, or in class while 'taking notes.' It was really funny when I first started writing those things in public, because I kept blushing whenever anybody would ask me what I was doing. I've gotten over that since then, but it's still funny when people ask. ...except, one time I left the room to use the restroom and this nosy girl pulled my papers out of my backpack. She read all of it, and tried to start a conversation with me when I returned. Oh boy, was I mad THAT afternoon...

Usually at work as well but it's tough because I'm the first person you see when you walk in so there's a lot of hasty browser minimizing as people approach my desk. Also I find camping trips to be extremely good for my creative bones. But people get nosy and want to know what you're writing while they're taking it easy around the camp fire but you're furiously writing in a notebook!

The reason it mostly did not look suspicious was because the document itself often had titles such as "Assignment2.doc" or something like that. XD My math teacher did NOT fall for this tactic though, he was completely aware. However, he still let me use the computer whenever I wanted. He was awesome. Also, one of my classmates was a big fan. :D

I attend write-ins. But because everyone is writing it's not so flustering for me when I am writing something I don't want read. I think it's simply because (and maybe this is my group) many don't ask for details of what you are writing unless you are willing to give them AND my nano region know I'm an erotica writer.

For those who write on computers at work, there are a lot of places that track what you're doing on their computers (with keyloggers and such), so I'd be very careful about that.

My trick to writing "naughty" scenes in public is to change the font to one of those fancy cursive ones that's harder to read and make the type small. ;)

The back of my art history class last year was one of the Best places to write. It was especially good when we were going over naked statuary. Have a new character to describe? Here's a good looking statue of a man/woman/couple for your viewing pleasure! :P Besides that, I would have to say the student lounge.

In the city library on the internet computers they provide. In fact, it was those same computers that got me started reading erotic stories: a friend at the time left a stack of fan fics that she's printed out on my bed as a surprise one day. I wonder if the librarian who picked up the copies from the printer read a little of them. The librarians for the media area where really cool, very nice people. I bet they might have liked them.

Usually in coffee shops or pubs, or trains. But you can guarantee that the minute I am in the middle of a dirty scene, that will be the time that someone comes up and asks what I'm writing. I find it more embarrassing if I'm doing a read through and suddenly there's this sex scene that I forgot was coming. I become convinced the person next to me is reading my screen. Of course I couldn't give two ticks if I were reading a sex scene someone else wrote. But if it's mine, I'm suddenly an outrageous deviant.

The most public place I've written erotica at work and church. Don't do either any more. Reasons are I don't work at the moment, and church, well I stopped writing during the service, but I still write during Sunday school as I don't have a class while my daughter is in Sunday School. But if I still had a job I'd continue to write at work on breaks or lulls in actual work to do. Mostly I write wherever and whenever an idea pops into my head, no matter how public. That's not to say that I'd share it with anyone I didn't think could handle the subject matter.

Fully understand the front office writing. i quite often didn't use the computer, wrote the really dirty stuff on paper and could easily shuffle work related papers or file folders over it. Now that I think of it, it's a good thing that I used a notebook and not loose leaf or there'd probably be a page stuffed in purchase order or contract file...boy wouldn't that be an interesting meeting for that buyer! And the camping thing, yep get that too! So hard to explain what I'm writing to people who don't really want to know. Though I do have to be careful round the house now that my 7 year old has learned to read.

Probably because I am a little perverse, but I have to say, writing sex scenes in public just gives me these weird butterflies of pure excitement in my gut. I get really jumpy like I'm ten looking at porn on the internet. Haha, but I think it's mostly paranoia. These days I don't write much in public *I have a laptop that I just take elsewhere if I need my writing time* partially because I dislike the interruptions that other beings cause to my chi-flow. This one time in highschool, though.... haha, I wrote about six pages of pure smut during a computer class. Ah, the escapades of youth. Heh.

Usually I write when I put the kids in bed... spend the whole night watching secretary and typing away on my tablet. But I normally write on my lunch break at a bench... and I have been known to jot a few things when I'm in line at walmart.

I'm not sure I'd ever feel comfortable writing "out in the world". I think I'd feel incredibly self-conscious. Athough, I confess yall are inspiring me to try! The issue Dark_Stardust mentioned might be a concern too! My writing certainly has an "effect" on me! Might prove awkward...hm. Perhaps the need for self-restraint would mean I'd get more actual writing done...;)

I write it so much at school I don't even consider that odd anymore... ;) Probably the most interesting was on a plane to New York, right next to this buisnessman (My laptop has a pretty big screen (16-17") and those seats are really tiny) - and I seriously couldn't tell if he was reading it or not, but I could have sworn he was. It was a M/M sex scene with some downright... interesting... kinks! Heh. If only I could have been a fly on the wall for any reaction he may have had later...

I was writing a pretty steamy scene while I was supposed to be taking notes in Physics class. Teacher walks over and eyes my paper and I'm freaking out on the inside. So I expertly ask him a physics question, and while he is distracted with explaining, I carefully slip it under my spiral notebook. That could've ended disastrously.

Heeeey. Not writing erotica, but I did write a scene today where two characters got a bit hot and heavy (and, it being a Victorian novel, I had to preserve everyone's delicate sensibilities, but it was kind of hot =|). I wrote it in my school's lab where I work. Granted, it was an empty conference room, but anybody could have walked by and walked in. AT ANY TIME.

I had a full time job one summer that I was working at temporarily until I could be moved into another position, and the only thing they needed me for was to gather timecards on Friday and lock up filing cabinets at the end of the day. That gave me a LOT of time to fill, and since my "office" was actually a little nook in the back corner of a big room filled with filing cabinets, and all I had there was a chair, a desk and a typewriter...I spent the whole summer writing erotica *lol* If they only knew what they were paying me good money for!

I wrote a little bit in my workplace: a university library. Ok, it is all matured student and it's related to the medical field (there is book for students in nursing, nutrition, child development, etc) but I could have stumble on a prude person while writing there.

At a write-in last week, the time had come in my novel to write a scene of intimacy. And I use a typewriter. There were only two others at the write-in, but I was still a comical sight, tucking the ends of my paper back and putting my hat on top so that nobody would catch sight of certain words. Of course, I could hardly have been more obvious, hiding it like that, but I figured it was better to let people wonder.

I tend to write a good number of sex scenes on public transit, biting my tongue while people look at me funny. But the most public place I've "done it" is probably in a room full of fifty people...with my ex staring at me...and I was just like "Hmm, should probably pay attention to what they're saying but I just can't tear myself away from the scene." I've also written sex scenes IN the location that they take place (IE if my characters have sex on floor four of the school library, I'll go there).

My Boyfriend wrote me a whole notebook of erotica while in school last year and had to keep hiding it from his friends. The most public space I have written it in, would have to be either a coffee shop or my university library. The funniest, though, was definitely a lecture the other week, where I had a friend on one side reading it and a friend on the other side trying to write funny poetry to distract me from the sex and make my scene turn out odd.

Could've sworn I dropped a comment in this thread or one like it. Maybe the latter. Unless I was just voyeuring threads at the time. Anyway, I do a fair bit of the writing I actually get done at my workplace, a gas station. So I'll have a notebook lying around with whatever I'm writing and occasionally that turns out to be an erotic scene. I wasn't sure how I felt about it at first, but I've grown to enjoy the exhilaration of worrying someone might catch me at it for the most part. Like having actual sex in a public space to some extent I suppose.

This novel I'm working on isn't an erotica, per se. I've never worked on this novel out in the public ( I keep forgetting to go to the library. ) but I was writing a sex scene between my two MCs this morning while Mom sat in the same room. I worried I might've been blushing too hard, and I was so worried she'd ask why I was so red. LOL ;)

Most of my writing tends to be in public, so I've written erotica in flight, on buses, in coffee shops, at my relatives' houses, when watching TV with my parents... pretty much everywhere I write.
