It's been pointed out that these instructions are a bit out of date, as the new version of Trillian (5.1) has come out since they were written. Instructions for using 5.1 have now been added. For those of you still using older versions of Trillian, the old instructions will remain at the bottom of this post.
1) Sign in to your account. (Create one first if you don't have one.)
2) At the top of the Trillian window, click the button that says "Trillian", and click "Manage accounts".
3) This should take you to the accounts window. At the bottom, click "Add a new account", then select "IRC".
4) Enter what you want your account name and nickname to be. (I usually use the same thing for both, I'm not really sure what the difference is.) Where it says Server Host, type (or copy + paste) this: irc.starchat.net . Tick the box that says "Automatically connect to this account at start up".
5) Now click the "Settings" button. In the new window that opens, select "Miscellaneous". At the top of this page, you should see something that says Commands, with a text box next to it. In the box, type (copy + paste) this: /join #nanoglos .
6) Exit out of the settings and accounts windows. Sign out of your Trillian account. From the next time you sign in, you will join our chat room automatically!
For those who asked, or for those who would like to use the chatrooms without being kicked by the internet... (Yes, this looks a bit scary, but once it's set up, you shouldn't ever have to touch it again.)
Download Trillian here: http://www.trillian.im/ (I use 4.2 for Windows)
Once you've got that downloaded and installed, you'll be able to create a Trillian account. Start up Trillian, and create an account through the prompts.
Once that's done, Trillian will log you in. Now you're ready to set up your IRC connection.
On your Trillian screen, underneath where it says "Online", click on the icon on the left (Connection Manager). This will take you to a new screen. Click the button at the bottom that says, "Add a new connection". In the options, click IRC.
This gives you three fields to fill in. In the first two fields, put the name you want to use. (I put the same name in both. If you leave the first field blank, it doesn't work. I don't know why, though...) In the third field, put "irc.starchat.net" without the quotes. To make it easy, you can click the "Automatically connect" button underneath, too. Once you've done all that, click Connect.
Okay, you've connected to IRC, now it's time to set up the chat room! Click "Settings" (right next to the Connect/Disconnect button). Look at the menu with the red background on the left, and you should have a section called "Miscellaneous". Click it.
On the screen that comes up, there is a section at the top for Commands. In the first line of the Commands section, type this: /join #nanoglos Once you've done that, close the settings window. You're all set up! From the next time you log in to Trillian, you will automatically go straight into the chat room. You shouldn't have to go through any of this again.
From here, you can either log out of Trillian and log back in, or you can join the nano channel manually. To do this yourself, go back to your main Trillian window and right click the IRC icon (grey dot). Click Join a channel (at the bottom of the pop-up menu). In the channel field, type #nanoglos , then click Join at the bottom. This will log you straight into the nano chat room.
There ya go! Hope to see you guys in the chat room. (And brownie points to the people who figure out how many times I've used the word "once" in this post.)
Oops! Sorry. I meant to add "through trillian" to the thread title. I know some people won't want to mess with trillian!
It's not as bad as it looks, especially since if you choose to go through trillian, it only has to be done once, and then it connects automatically after that. Of course, this may just be my own bias, because I've been using trillian for quite awhile. Sorry about that! :)
OK, I've downloaded and installed trillian and created an account. There is no icon on the left under where it says online. I can't find anything to do with add a new connection. Under online it just says contacts and offline contacts. Help me please! I knew this would be too complicated for me!
Aaarghhh! This is getting more and more frustrating! I've now found add a connection (didn't realise I had to confirm account from an email) but there's no option for irc. There's AIM, ICQ, MSN, various others but no IRC!
Oops! Sorry guys, I didn't realise the new version was different. I will download the new version this week and add instructions for the newest version available. Sorry for the confusion.
Also though, if you don't want to install trillian, you can join us via http://www.starchat.net/chat/?chan=nanoglos - it's browser based, so it can be a bit buggy, but it worked the last time I checked ;)
I shall be there this evening for a little bit as well. Sadly I must disappear early on Tuesdays, so I survive my early morning wake up calls on Wednesdays...
Sadly, for some reason, the IRC connection has not been included in the latest version for Mac. I have no idea why, but hopefully it will be reimplemented soon. Sorry about that!
For now, you can access the chat room through your browser. The link is here:

That sounds incredibly complicated!

Re: How to access our regional chatroom
I can add a contact, I can add an account, I can add an identity but I can't work out how to add a connection!

Re: How to access our regional chatroom
Make sure you download vesion 4.2. I had the same problems as I just downloaded the latest version on the website.
Google 4.2 trillian and you should find a link to download it from that. Then the other steps should be easier to follow I think :p
Re: How to access our regional chatroom
Thanks. I'll give it a go tomorrow. My brain can't take any more tonight!

Re: How to access our regional chatroom
I can't get this to work. It says I need an add on. But what add on?
Re: How to access our regional chatroom
It's a java plugin - but it's not downloading - I'll look into
It today :)

Re: How to access our regional chatroom
Whee! I'm in, but there's only one other person there
Re: How to access our regional chatroom
Hmm. I lost my internet connection for a while, I'm sorry. I WILL be there tomorrow afternoon and evening though -:)

Re: How to access our regional chatroom
http://www.starchat.net/chat/?chan=#nanoglos is the right link, sorry guys!
Also, I'm not sure *what* plugin it needs to dowload, it's not working from Chrome. I'll need to poke it later when I'm on the laptop :)

Re: How to access our regional chatroom
Original post updated with instructions for those using newer versions of Trillian (5.1).
Re: How to access our regional chatroom
I use a Mac and when I get to the bit in the instructions about that says
2) At the top of the Trillian window, click the button that says "Trillian", and click "Manage accounts".
3) This should take you to the accounts window. At the bottom, click "Add a new account", then select "IRC".
I don't get "IRC" showing up in the list.
Does anyone have any ideas, please?
Re: How to access our regional chatroom
Sadly, for some reason, the IRC connection has not been included in the latest version for Mac. I have no idea why, but hopefully it will be reimplemented soon. Sorry about that!
For now, you can access the chat room through your browser. The link is here:

Re: How to access our regional chatroom
I did a bit of digging and found the same thing, Thanks Rae
