The good news thread

Hi,

I wanted to create a place where we can all shout about how pleased we are about any aspect of nanowrimo at any point along the way.

So if an amazing character has just appeared out of the blue or you are writing some killer prose, shout about it here.

I'll start; I have reached my target today despite working, having three kids off school, being ill and going to a bonfire display. Really pleased with myself I'm feeling really motivated and excited for what's to come...

Anyone else?

Did two write-ins today, made an excellent start (was going to put my wordcount then realised we don't have to as the forum software does it for us), and it's flowing well. :-)

Got another two write-ins tomorrow ...

Also, I'm trying to see how many chapters I can go without having to mention the Colonel's name. It's going to be fun.

If it's at all possible to go without mentioning his name, then leave it out altogether. It'll add a sense of mystery. My main character is only ever referred to by a pseudonym, the same pseudonym that I'm writing this post under. You never find out his real name. He has one, but that is a secret I will never reveal.

In my case, it's coffee. Having abstained from all caffeine for about two years, just one coffee (instant) in the morning gives me one hell of a kick! However empty my head is beforehand, the coffee sparks writable thoughts - in tandem with a 'What the hell!' feeling. It switches my inner editor right off - which in my case is essential to progress. (It's the reason I'm doing NaNoWriMo in the first place.) Of course, dependence on any stimulant is ultimately unhealthy ... I just hope I don't graduate to the white wine and Red Bull substitute at 6 a.m. before the novel is finished. ("That first puff/sip/snort is the preliminary step on the slippery slope to hell, m'boy ..." etc.)

Haha, like the unintended pun though!

In short, my body's got trouble assimilating sugar to begin with (not diabetes though), and I think it's my fault: I probably overdid it by only eating sweet foods in the morning then nothing (except snacks) until the evening. And of course, I did that on both Thursday and Saturday... On top of being exhausted. It hasn't happened today, if it does it again next week I will get it checked :)

Finally, productive insomnia. It's exactly half past five in the morning, I have yet to sleep, but I finally hit 10K : ) Was getting scared it wasn't going to happen this year.

I have to credit the two new characters that gave birth to themselves around midnight, whole and complete, which has given me a whole new, and very intriguing (at least to myself) aspect to my story. Writing the previous main characters was like pulling teeth : / they better hope I don't kill them off.

Hmm, sleep or write?

I am currently getting great wordcount mileage out of a debate between my two teenage protagonists on which major world religion best fits their experiences with the apparent afterlife they've been visiting. So far, the sources cited to support their arguments have been Wikipedia, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Assassin's Creed II and a holiday in Spain one of them took once.

While this may not be the deepest theological discussion ever engaged in, it has been great for my wordcount and an absolute delight to write.

I'm claiming as good news that my tactic of getting ahead in the first few days is paying off. My days are starting at 05:45 Wed-Sat this week, and the workload is heavy. 05:45, for those who don't know me, is not my natural habitat. By the time I got to the write-in this evening, my remaining mental energy only proved good enough for 1200 words. I'm sure this will be the case for the next three days too, but thanks to the buffer I've built up, if I can manage 1000 words a day for those three days, I'll still be ahead (just). :-)

I'm finding when I write tired, my forebrain filter is missing, and I can write some pretty amazing stuff. Metaphores trip off my fingers like drippy-stuff, and similies dance jigs on pointy things.
However, when I try to write anything when my eyes stick together with gummy stuff, I've waited too long, and not only lose my editorial filter, I also lose all my language skills.
It's a fine line I walk, and I usually fall off and bump my nose.

Hi Nereti : ) You're back in London. That's great.

Yes, the 5k I wrote yesterday was massively hard work, like wading through treacle, but today, I tried out the Wordcount pub Crawl in the Word Wars forum and that made it really easy.

I've been writing all afternoon and I'm not even tired. Because you're doing lots of little different sprints and wars, it really helps distract you from how much you've actually written. You should try it. It could help.

Re: The good news thread

I've falling into the habit of writing a single novel over two nanowrimos - this is the third novel I'm doing this way. I'll stick this one in a drawer until next November and get back to editing one of the others in December :-)

That must feel amazing. I envy you.
I'm still behind, but got over 4,000 words done in one day which I'm pretty proud of!

It does feel rather good.

4k in one day is great - my biggest day was 4,108 and that was five hours of writing.

Wow, that's impressive. I wanted to reach 50k in the lock-in, but I'm afraid I won't be able to make it :( (I didn't RSVP, but I had hopes until last minute).

Congrats!

Thanks! But you're pretty much on track, so even without the lock-in, the magic 50k looks to be within your grasp.

Yeah, well, I'm struggling a little... I didn't write at all yesterday, and I'm in the same track today... maybe I can make the lock-in virtually, trying to write tonigth, or I'll go to a write-in tomorrow... I don't know, I'm in a blah mood (I wanted to go to the lock-in, looks like a lot of fun).

But you're right, I'm close, I'm not gonna complain (below this line) :))

Thank you! But I don't have Skype installed. The netbook I brought to London is tiny, old and painfully slow. When I open Scrivener I have to close Firefox, and viceversa :)

But thanks for the support, and have fun!

Once it was clear I was going to hit 50k, I decided to go for 60k, just as a 'soft' goal - nothing I was going to work too hard for, but as a nice-to-have. I'm now definitely going to do that, so I declare that more good news.

I won! Eee! Oh man I'm so chuffed with myself - third attempt, first time to get further than 10k, and now all the way to the end. :D

(Now, er, comes editing and adding the scenes I skipped etc etc, but first I shall enjoy this moment.)
