Having abstained from all caffeine for about two years, just one coffee (instant) in the morning gives me one hell of a kick! However empty my head is beforehand, the coffee sparks writable thoughts - in tandem with a 'What the hell!' feeling. It switches my inner editor right off - which in my case is essential to progress. (It's the reason I'm doing NaNoWriMo in the first place.) Of course, dependence on any stimulant is ultimately unhealthy ... I just hope I don't graduate to the white wine and Red Bull substitute at 6 a.m. before the novel is finished.
