Hey gang!

I thought it would be nice to have a proper "chatting/floodish/small talk" thread, in order to keep the other topics clean (mainly for the potential newcomers who might want to get answer at a first glance).

So, I'm thrilled to start this post by saying that it was really, really a pleasure to have that kick off gmail party. Now I'm really looking forward to see you all on Saturday, just to put a face on your... words!

@Yvonne: I hope you don't feel *too* tired today!
@Ada: make sure you steal the computer from your mother again soon! :)
@Steph: did you manage to stop at 1h30? I must confess that I went to bed and wrote until 3am in my notebook, now I have to type everything...
@Lee: well... I can't come with something special to say. What about "Hi!" XD

Happy writing to you all (yes, that does include those I didn't mention, like... Mina for instance!)

Hi back at you, Suzanne! I was a bit quiet last night - I kept floating back and forth between the chat and writing. I am usually very good at multitasking, but last night... not so much. :)

I hope everyone got off to a great start on your novels! I'm just a few words shy of the 2K mark, and actually like a little bit of what I've written! I'd love to get a good cushion in these first days, so that when the doldrums hit later, I've got a safety net.

Keep on writing, everyone.

Hey hey,

I did!! Well, almost hehe. It wasn't all that late when I finally ended up going to bed and up early again this morning to continue, but the writing muse has kind of decided to divert into something else, but the daily count is written, I might add some more later in the day. :-)

Happy first NaNo day everyone!

Hé hé ;)

I thought I'd start at midnight, like I do every year, but I was too tired. It was realy not a good idea to do a nap before writing - and drinking beer during dinner didn't help either. I finally put down 1670 words this morning. Maybe I'll write more this afternoon, but I've more important things to do first.

Go go go everyone!! :D

Like I said in an other thread : Suzanne is our Demoiselle of Crack Idea....and also a mind reader.
I intended to start such a thread, but alas, I am working today.....and NOT enjoying it.

But I did get in 2003 words last night.....and I am paying for it. I am soooooooo exhausted!
But at least I got my writing done until this evening!

Bravo Mina and Steph and Suzanne and Ada and Lee and everyone else.

Random thought of the day:

I have a deadline on November 8th for publisher #2 who realised I was attempting Nano and is now seriously chasing me to finish my story on time.
Meanwhile, Publisher #1 is very happy because he realised that I was using NaNowrimo to write the novel he asked me to write for him.

Who said my life isn't complicated at the moment? LOL

Thanks for the support, Yvonne! ^^

So... I'm back from my meet up/write in with Larys (aka Mina) and... it was great fun!!!

Our meeting place being closed (!!!) we walked for about 25mn to the nearby town to find ourself a new place. Ended up drinking café viennois and eating pie while writing (and chatting, of couuurse!).

She is 95% convinced to join us on Saturday, so please help me support her so that she can make it!!!! :))

(and now we're looking for another "home" for our weekly Wednesdays write ins...)

Hi Mina,

I am officially supporting Suzanne's entreaty that you join us on Saturday.
For the time being, I cannot entice you with one of the famous NaNoWriMo stickers because they are still in transit.
However, if you consider yourself a brownie fiend, I will make an even greater effort to bake an extra lovely batch for Saturday.
I mean, you could just come for a brownie and a cup of coffee and a little introduction.

So, do have a chance of meeting you in person? (pleading smile directed your way :)

Brownies on Saturday? I have to bake for work for next week so I might be able to rustle up a trial run of something... No idea what but I can bake usually!

Good Morning Rosemary,

Great offer! With your baked goods and Suzanne's muffins we have spontaneously covered all Saturday write-ins save one.

I just want to mention that we need to be discreet with our brought food, as Exki sells all kinds of goodies. Some places are sensitive about this. We will be on the lower level so it should be ok. In exchange for the hospitality we would all need to purchase a coffee (or three, in my case)

This might sound nit-picky. It is just expected courtesy.

Have a great day. Off to the office I go.

Yvonne

Does this mean that every Saturday we'll have some nice baking ? Sounds like a good reason NOT to miss any write ins! :)

Then on one "free" Saturday, I'll bake some muffins! (we'll have to plan who bakes what for when LOL)

And on that note, I'm back to work today and won't have access to my Nano fix as they blocked the website... So speak to you this evening!! Have a great day!! :)

The day did go by fairly quickly, however I have now to start writing as I still have to write a full set of words... (guess what, I was really busy at the office... couldn't steal some time writing, what a shame, really, haha)

Oh, and I forgot to tell you all that if you ever need an inspiration for a character name, Mina is a specialist! She suggested the perfect name in the blink of an eye! ;)

Happy writing!

hello, everyone!
today was a really productive day for me. hehe.
i'm really glad i don't have school this week, and i also (weirdly) find this is easier that i thought.

here's another suggestion if you don't know what name to take: look in a latin dictionary or name one of your character after a (star) constellation.

that's what i've done. ;)
also, i would love to know about the names your MC and other characters have and why you chose to name them so.

mine are "Libra" and "Aulus".

best wishes,
Ada

i feel honored that you would actually let me read it. i would LOVE to.
i actually planned on naming my MC lyra, which isn't a constellation but a star. a very special star.
anyway, i didn't name her lyra because there is already one very famous lyra in fiction.
and i couldn't attempt to create a lyra as interesting and lyra-like as the one philip pullman wrote about in the his dark materials trilogy.

Hi Ada!

Great idea! I've had this nameless character in my mind for a long time (a vampire and tattoo artist, who's also my MC's best friend) - finally, I called him Leo, as in the star sign.

I've two MCs, Rory and Callum Madden, who are brothers and werewolves. I gave them Irish names as I lived in Northern Ireland when I first came up with these characters (but I started the novel only this year ^^;) and the story takes place in Britain.
I like giving my MCs names with a meaningful etymology. Rory means in Gaelic "red king" or "red haired king" - he has red hair and I destined him to a pack leader. Callum means "dove" and it also sounds like an Irish word meaning "scar" - he is a pacifist and has a very ugly scar across his face (in addition to many psychological scars).

I would have assumed they would expect us to buy something, after all, we are taking over part of the place for approximately 3 hours ;)
I can't wait now! I still have 1001 words to go today (unfortunately other things insist they need doing, and apparently are right), but I have no work tomorrow so hopefully a good chunk of Nanoing will be happening!

My own fault really, I wrote on my little notebook until late and now it's payback time! ^^

Ada: my main character is named "Eli" (and there is also a whole team around him but he is the most important) in reference (and how do you say "hommage") to a Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child character.

(just realised I have something very important to post in a different topic NOW)

That's funny, there's an Eli in the book I'm reading (and she's a vampire :[).
In case you're curious, the book is "Let the right one in" (Laisse-moi entrer en VF) by John Ajvide Lindqvist. It's very good so far.

Howdy!

Amen back. :) Crockpot!

I had the neatest, most unexpected thing happen to me today. My novel evolved thanks to a real buddy at the office. Since he knows that I am a writer, he often asks how things are progressing. Last week I explained to him how the MC sometimes throws the writer, (its creator, dangit !) a curve. Sometimes they are uncooperative, even belligerent. He thought it quite humorous. Lo and behold, my buddy slidled up to me with a bashful smile and asked me if I would please create a character based on him. He specifically asked for a rogue, mysterious, version of himself. Eureka & halleluja!! I know have a totally different middle of my novel. My MC, Trudy, is going to have the time of her life advancing from beginning to end thanks to her "gifted" supporting character.

Cecile, I think I caught a Genius here. I am so thankful.
A beaming ML

I gather from your exploding word count that you and Trudy are on a roll. Is this the way you took off?

I keep being flooded by stuff at work (subtitles for a DVD, rewrites of dialogue for the Golden Horse (animated) movie, commercials), and so I have left the writing till too late (like now, 10 p.m. after a long day at work). I keep thinking the weekend will bring a writing marathon, but that's not looking too good either.

Anyway, so glad you get to create a new existing character and work with Mr Colleague - rogue, mysterious: sounds good!

I had the very same idea, but collapsed on the keyboard before I could express myself. Non-writing activities are becoming more & more at odds with my writing (family not included). Mid-life crisis? Nah, I am simply not doing what my insides are telling me to do. B---y mortgage. So, I placate myself with the Elizabeth Gilbert 'Genius' talk'. I fall to my knees, Cecile, for sharing this jewel. In eating it for breakfast I hope to allow for much change in my writing. Cecile and Suzanne, let's hold hands. Big sigh....and a big hug for you both.

One of my short-stories has been selected to be part of the first issue of a new webzine. The organiser sent me a very enthusiastic email, mentioning that the whole jury was fond of my story. (which makes me almost happier than the fact it's been chosen, haha).

For those of you who weren't part of yesterday's lunch (SHAME on you):

I had THE most important mission today (which is the 75% reason why I took the day off - yes, you're allowed to laugh).

Tickets for a piano recital by Maestro Pollini were going to be on sale today. Website said that the hotline would be open at 8am, so at 7.30am I was already in front of my screen to book online.

They updated their website to say that the opening of the sale would be 10am.

9.55 I'm in front of TWO computers (just in case one would crash) and hoping that my internet connexion would hold and not drop dead at the wrong time.

9.59 I'm refreshing my browser every 2 seconds, getting increasingly stressed.

...

!!!
!!!!
*dances*

10.12 I printed the confirmation. I GOT THE TICKETS!!!!!!!!!!!

1.15pm out of curiosity, I checked the status of the concert. ALL good seats (were you can see the hands of the pianist) are sold out. Amazing.

And I'm already stressing about the following topics: what if the post loses my tickets, what if he cancels, what if...

Only 4 months to wait... :)

Eldarwen

Woooohh!!! You got them!! :-DD

Ah don't worry, the post won't lose them, it's probably the postman who will steal them to go see the concert himself ;-)
