Please use this thread for problems, confusion and suggestions.

A cluttered mind is one thing, but a cluttered chat thread is just messy.

OK, let's start with the first suggestion pre-Nano:

Make sure that all your administrative/banking/invoices stuff is in order. Seriously. There is nothing more frustrating than wasting an afternoon taking care of bills and stuff instead of writing.

Basically, rule #1 to get ready for Nano would be: get rid of everything that should be and can be done before Nano. No need for unsolicited distractions! :)

Wonderful suggestion!!!

Paid all my bills today and bought enough groceries to last (hopefully) until Thursday.
Am "glad" that next week is school vacation. Although I love my Greek classes that will be one less event to
take time away from writing. And he fact that my teacher will be absent the week after buys me even more writing time.

Rule # 2 could be to limit lunch time dates, just in case.

I couldn't agree more! I already turned down a few invitations. Now if it's a lunch with Fellow Nanowriters, then it's different as we would be talking about plots and writing, so clearly, that is a must be! ^^

The rant of the day:
I had to change my plan AGAIN. Two of my supporting characters decided to team up in order to have a more important part in the novel. And while I was giving them what they wanted, I got finally the end's plan.

Problem is: I have to change the title of my novel as it's basically giving away the whole plot...

Apart from that, I'm slowly catching up!

2,455 words to go to reach 20K!

I kinda had a similar problem today. There was a particular scene I had in mind and as I was writing, I realized it could not be realistic and I had to change it all.

Supporting characters who want a more important role - I've had that every year. Sometimes it wasn't that bad, but most of the time it was a real pain!
The title on the other hand >.< - I know it's hard when it comes to find one. It's worse when you think you got it and have to change it thereafter...

Go go go Suzanne! You'll get those 20K! :D

Looks like everyone is catching up! And You...well, it looks like you eat words for breakfast!!!
am so impressed. My highlight of the day will be sitting at the Citroen Garage in their lovely cafeteria while I get my winter tires mounted. It will take at least 2 hours. 2 hours of waiting =2 hours of quality writing time!!!

hello!
go go go everybody. you will all so so do it.

i have NONE of the problems any of you listed, but a completely different one.
i decided that my book is going to have 9 chapters: two introduction chapters where i show "good" and "bad", and then one chapter for every day of the week. so seven plus two chapters.
i tried for 'metaphorical' reasons to describe the introductive ones in great detail. and after that, i didn't manage to get out of that writing style. NOT AT ALL. i write about everything, literally everything that is happening.
yes, i am still goofing around at chapter one, which is monday. i don't know what to do. i passed the 25k and i still haven't finished the first chapter.
my characters seem to have some kind of anxiety or phobia for changing chapters. this is hell.
it's a bit like groundhog day, but worse.

also kind of funny. i have no problems at all of the kind "i don't know what to write".
it's more like "i can go on like that forever, i will just be repetitive as hell and take notice of every single fly that appears in front of my characters."

aaaaaaaah.
sincerely,

I'm of the same opinion. Just keep on writing like you do now, eventually you'll get tired of your characters noticing everything and then you'll feel like it's time to take them to the next day. Being an author also means shouting at your characters sometimes, or force them into another chapter for that matter.

Hmm my suggestion would be to keep going as you're doing it now and then just keep writing way past November until you're done? Or continue next year for Nano? Although by then your style might have changed quite a bit.

Ada> I have to say the same as the others. Perhaps maybe try not writing chronologically, at least temporarily. Start the next chapter perhaps? I did that when stuck on a scene and then about 10 minutes later managed to finish the scene I wanted how I wanted it. Sometimes you need a little break from this section, but not necessarily writing :)

And I have sad news regarding our NaNoLunch on Thursday, I won't be able to make it as I have classes to teach :( Sorry, but someone eat a chocolate dessert for me!

Hi Rose,
Too bad you can't make it Thursday.
As ML I feel it as part of my duty to delegate Suzanne to eat the chocolate dessert for you and if she chooses to do so, she may share it.
Over and out.
See you on Saturday at the Write-In then.
Have a great day.

The word count thing sucks by the way! Missed the midnight deadline quite a few times last year, so paying a little more attention to it this year, or I'm trying to just simply get done writing soon enough in the day so I'm not falling asleep at my desk hehe.

Little update on my previous reply but:

Are you sure it was past midnight that you've updated? Since the site has been having issues with the daily word count, the graphs, and everything else included. They have been working on this for at least 6 hours now since people have started notifying them of the problem (as of now, the daily word count is still messing but everything else seems to be working fine again).

Not that it really matters that much, but in case you want your stats to look correct ;-) you could post on the tech support thread about this word count issue. Otherwise.. nevermind ^-^

Hey Steph,
Thanks for catching the word count funky-ness. I have had no problem and giving Rose a soothing answer.
And since you are using Scrivener, Rose, you'll always have the ecurity blanket of your actual word count.

Take Care,
Yvonne

Clock is ticking, I'm already counting the hours til lunch (ooops, counting... not the right topic!!! XD)

I'm slowly getting stressed as I didn't manage to catch up on as many words as I did plan yesterday. Crockpot is being real slow! Will have to be a little more efficient tonight! ;)

Argh... My story was supposed to be 15 chapters long.
I can see it already stretching to 20.

Interesting fact I discovered yesterday in my story: "paper" books don't exist anymore and have been totally replaced by reading tablets (also used as computers). Real books are so rare that only a handful of wealthy people can acquire a book for their own private collection. Also, the Museum is trying hard to gather the remaining ones to lock them in safety in a Library. And whoever is caught damaging one book gets a severe punishment.

So imagine when the shock of the Superintendent (MC1) and his young Lieutenant (MC2) when they found pages that have been riped out from a book on their murder scene...

I'll just keep plugging away as much as I can until Sunday. I need to get ahead to be able to take Nov 24th off as I have been invited to a small party and would like to have fun and not hear my characters (whom I love, save one or two) calling to me from my attic.

I am glad, too, 'cause this ol' lady is soo tired. I wrote with a fountain pen last night for the last hour because I just could not focus on the screen any longer. All those late nights and early morning and not being able to turn my writer's brain on low.

I wouldn't agree more on what you said! :)
Plus, Nano teaches you how to organise your time around a big project!
(in a way, I find it interesting to be "behind", just because of the challenge it brings...)

Yvonne, I like the picture of the characters calling you from the attic! :)

Hey there! I found this link on the French forum and it's helping me a lot raising my WC :D

http://writtenkitten.net/

For those who don't know, you choose a goal in the rolldown menu (for example : 100) and for each 100 word, you get a picture of a cute kitten ^^ I'm a cat-lover and I'm loving it!

Ranting about my characters.

Two chapters before the conclusion, a botanical garden suddenly appeared, because MC2 wants to have a romantic moment with his new girlfriend (saved from an horrible death by MC3 btw).

Now, instead of writing happily and easily the end of my novel, I find myself doing researches about those garden and creating a Sci Fi version just for that couple. Seriously?????

LOL That's what I do to my characters too - even for small things. One of my characters has a haircut that's really a pain to draw (especially from the side) and so in my book, he gets picked on because of it :p

That's what writing books is mainly for - catharsis!

Hi everyone! I see how impatient you feel about Camp NaNoWriMo or next november, so I thought I'd suggest this site to you :

https://750words.com/

Some of you may know it *thinking of Maikie - I know about this site thanks to her ;)* Otherwise, it's ideal to keep the continuum until the next event. Best moment to do this is at the start of the day. I also use this as a kind of diary, to get these parasite thoughts out of my head before I start working.
