I figured I'd start a thread for one of the best book series ever! So.. any fans around? Which is your favourite book/movie? Who are your favourite characters? Snape: Yay or Boo?

jenifar_kd
50547 words so far Winner!

Favourite book: Goblet of Fire
Favourite movie: Chamber of Secrets
Favourite characters: Severus Snape, Arthur Weasley, Luna Lovegood, Harry Potter, Draco Malfoy, Lucius Malfoy (in that order)
Snape - Yay or Boo? : Yay! The true hero of the story, hidden behind the smokescreen of Harry

Silliest scene in the movie version that forgets character's motivations in the book: Deathly Hallows Part 2, Harry confronting Severus in the Great Hall. So, why didn't Severus cast legillimens right there and give Harry the memories he needed instead of waiting until the Shrieking Shack? In the book Severus was busy fighting McGonagall, in the movie he was just standing there being dramatic.

Legilimens reads the target's mind, it doesn't allow the target to read your mind. Snape had to give Harry his memories in a physical container, which would have been a little difficult with everyone watching.

True. But it can also be used for communication - eg images of the ministry, Snape and Dumbledore's silent conversation on the Astronomy Tower.

So, having been in Harry's head many times before, there's no reason I see why Snape couldn't have blasted Harry with a Legillimens message. 50 words and Harry would have all he needed to know.

It wouldn't have worked as well as the memory dump. But once the film makers changed the scene, Snape saying nothing is out of character

It can only be used for communication if BOTH parties know it, so they can read each other's minds (whatever Snape said about it not being mind reading, that's what the word means). And I thought Snape and Dumbledore weren't actually having a conversation, just mentally reviewing what they both already knew. Having a conversation in the same sense that an old married couple can have a silent conversation.

Favorite Book: Prisoner of Azkaban
Favorite Movie: Order of the Phoenix
Favorite Characters: ((in no particular order)) Albus Dumbledore, Severus Snape, Remus Lupin, Luna Lovegood
Snape? Total yay. I especially found myself relating to the pain of his penseive memory in OoTP

Favorite Book: Prisoner of Azkaban
I LOVED the clean, neat theme of the book as fear. And it always gives me super hope for Harry.

Favorite Movie: Honestly, I don't like that many of the movies, but I did like the 8th DH Part 2. To me, it was the most well done, even though there were definitely parts that made me angry.

Favorite Characters: SIRIUS BLACK. HAGRID. James Potter. Ron Weasley. The Twins. KREACHER.

Snape: Mixed feelings. I get that he's got a tragic tale and he's all courageous spying on Voldemort, but to me that doesn't excuse the torment and bulling that he put Harry through.

Favorite book: Prisoner of Azkaban
Favorite movie: Deathly Hallows Part 1
Favorite characters (more or less in order): Lupin(!!!!!!!), Sirius, Snape, *Bellatrix*, Dumbledore, McGonagall, Tonks, Dobby, Luna, and Mad-Eye. I think Dobby really was important; he wasn't the Jar-Jar Binks of the HP world.

Snape: YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Favourite book is probably Sorcerer's Stone. Favourite movie is probably Half-Blood Prince, closely followed by Deathly Hallows, pt. 1 and Chamber of Secrets. Favourite characters... Fenrir Greyback (and he was barely in the movies, D:), Barty Crouch Jr. (hello doctor, *fans self*), Lucius Malfoy, and Mr. Ollivander. That last one is the only one I legitimately love, Fenrir I like because I love werewolves, and I love Barty and Lucius near entirely because of David Tennant and Jason Isaacs' portrayals of them. And Snape is fine. I don't have strong feelings for him either way, but I thought his flashbacks in the movie were done really well, so I'm probably a bit more 'yay' than I was when the book series ended.

I'm a big fan! I'm rereading the books again as we speak, it's they only books I can read all over again without getting bored. And I'm happy that I kind of grew up with the books, it hadn't been the same thing if I had read all of them at one time. All the waiting and longing between the books was a big part of the experience, all the theory discussions and such! How I miss that!

My favorite book is Prisoner of Azkaban, not so much because it has the best content but it gave me the best reading experience of my life. I have never experinced that awesome feeling again, that I had when I just had read it for the first time. When it comes to the movies it's difficult... but I go with Deathly Hallows Part 1, it's very slow but I really love the feelings they have captured, it's on the spot!

My favorite character is Luna Lovegood, because she is just so sweet and weird. She is actual one of my role-models in life! Snape is a great character and I never lost my doubt for him, even when it seemed the darkest. But I don't like him as a person.

Read the first book when I was like, what, eight or nine. Loved it. I think I've read the first four books at least five times each, the last three two or three times. I love them, my favourite book will always be Chamber of Secrets because it's just so intense, and it holds emotional value. AND I love Gilderoy Lockhart and Lucius Malfoy.

Favourite movie must be the same, because of same reasons. Other favourite characters of mine include Luna Lovegood and Harry himself. Snape is a definite yay, as well.

I just picked up Book 1 again; I haven't read any of them in ages.

My favorite book is Prisoner of Azkaban. I'm not entirely sure why, and maybe going through and re-reading the entire series from start to finish as an adult would change my opinion on that, but.... *shrug*

My favorite movie is Deathly Hallows Part 1. I think they did a really good job of sticking to the plot of the book, for the most part, and it was just... well, it was that movie where they transitioned from being kids into being adults. I'm not a shipper, but I thought the scene with Harry and Hermione dancing in the tent was terribly cute, in the "you're my best friend, please cheer up" sense. I could so easily picture Sirius having done something like that with Lily, once upon a time.

My favorite character is... well, I'm not sure. In a lot of ways, I like the concepts of certain characters more than the actual characters themselves. I suppose that's a side effect of spending years and years in the Harry Potter fandom.

"I like the concepts of certain characters more than the actual characters themselves."

THIS. This so much. Especially when it comes to Snape. I read fanfiction where things go differently and he realizes Harry isn't his father and then I go back to canon and I go "...Oh. Oh right. You really are a complete and utter (expletive). No, pining after his mother and getting mocked by his father DOESN'T make it okay."

I think it was more than that, if Snape was kind to Harry it would more than likely painted at large target on his back and would have alienated him from the "darker" parts of the book. While I can't say Snape was in the right a certain amount of animosity would have been required even if Harry had walking into Slytherin.

I do not follow your logic. Please explain. Which "him" are you referring to, and why is it necessary that he not be alienated from the "darker" parts of the book?

xxedwardxsakuraxx

I think it meant if Snape was kind to Harry Voldemort or the other Death Eaters might have been suspicious about it. Also when Voldemort was resurrected, he would've said to Snape: "Since you're so close to Harry bring him to me." Yeah, that would've been bad. Snape would have to give up his role as a spy and this Dumbledore's most reliable asset.

Also, Snape might've been more proactive in protecting Harry. This would've completely changed the events in book one. The only reason Harry investigated the stone so much was because he suspected Snape. If Snape had been nice in the first place Harry would've trusted him. Thus Quirrel could have very well possible gotten his hands on the stone :O So it was kind of necessary to the plot for Snape to be kind of a D. xP

I think a major treason I like POA is that my favorite characters include Sirius and Lupin. :D I also thought DH1 did an excellent job of telling the story and sticking to the plot. At first, I though Harry and Hermione's dance was weird, but now I see it differently. I think it's the sort of thing Harry would do.

Harry Potter is my favourite series ever. It's reallt a toss up for favourite book between Prisoner of Azkaban, Order of the Phoenix, and Deathly Hallows. (And, well, Philosopher's Stone, which started the whole thing off.) All three have amazing story lines, adventure, betrayal, danger, and pretty much everything you would want from a book. I love Ginny (I cosplay her a lot, she's so awesome), Luna and Tonks (those two girls rock!). The twins, of course, will always hold a place in my heart. As for Snape, my aunt and I had the theory that the only reason Dumbledore trusted Snape after he came back to the good side was because he loved Lily. We had that theory since, I believe, book 5. So, we called it. It was actually quite spectacular, because my uncle told us we were mad, that it would never happen. Cut to a couple years later with him throwing the book across the room... Anyways, I do like Snape, but I think the way he treated his students was horrible. Yes, Snape, I understand all you see when you look at Harry is James and his abborent ways. Yes, I understand that when you see Hermione, you think about how Lily was the top of her class, always having the answer. Yes, I udnerstand that you see James' friends in Ron. Yes, I understand that when you look at Neville, you think about the possibility of what would have happened if Voldemort had chosen to go after him instead of Harry. I get it, but that still doesn't give you the right to be a total dick to the students. So, yes, I like Snape, but I don't like how he acted throughout most of the series, and I don't think that the fact that he turned out to be good in the end should make everyone forget how horrible he was through most of the series.

I'm an adult Harry Potter fan that grew up with the series {I was 11 when I got Philosopher's Stone for Christmas the year it was published} and still adore re-reading the books even today.

My favourite book in the series is still Prisoner of Azkaban simply because the plot twists are so beautifully written and the last scenes in the book hold so much emotion for Harry and Sirius because Harry believes that he's going to get a chance to escape life with the Dursleys forever. It's also the book that introduces Lupin.

Speaking of whom; Lupin is my favourite character in the series because he's the paternal figure that's been missing in Harry's life. He's the one to offer support, both educationally and emotionally and is the only adult who truly treats Harry as the person that he is {Sirius saw too much of James in Harry and Molly is a touch too overprotective}. I was disappointed that we never got to see his death in Deathly Hallows, but maybe that's not such a bad thing, after all there was a war going on and pointless deaths are par for the course. Plus Harry simply wasn't present when it happened.

I'm not as attached to the movies as the books, but I feel Deathly Hallows part 2 was a very fitting end to the franchise. It packed such a wallop emotionally that I sat and cried during the reveal of Snape's memories and when Harry willingly sacrificed his life to protect everyone else. Plus all the scenes just clicked along at a lovely pace and I never once felt that it skipped out on anything, nor did I think it dragged at any point. The other movies had massive problems with pacing and I think that will become even more evident when the DVD/Bluray comes out and people start marathoning the movies.

I don't remember a time before Harry Potter!

My favourite book used to be Prisoner of Azkaban, but I think I over-read it slightly (if that's possible) and so now it's between Half Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows. That said, I need elements of all of them. Yeah. Need.

As for movie, I'd say the last one (When I call it HP8 none of my friends seem to understand me.) I have cried all three times I saw it at the Resurrection Stone scene.

Hermione will always, I think, be my all time favourite character out of every fandom. I guess she's probably my role model. But I also love Luna, just... cause. Heh. My friend started calling me Luna because I asked him if he believed in Nargles...

Favourite Wizard Rock song: I Believe in Nargles, The Whomping Willows. Just sayin'...

Snape... Snape. When I re-listened to POA over the summer, I found myself hating him. He was horrible. But it took the name 'Sev' to make stop me and make me wonder how I could. So... Both?

Last thing: I'm told that our family first got really into Harry Potter one Boxing Day. On BBC Radio 4, they'd given the whole day over to Stephen Fry reading the first book. I was just wondering, does anyone know when this was? I'm quite curious...

Big wave to all fellow fans!

Favourite book: Order of the Phoenix. I know lots of people dislike Harry in that book, but that's actually when I sympathised with him the most. There was just too much for him to bear, and those who would have understood and helped were not around. Then DH, then PoA.

Favourite character(s): Bellatrix, Hermione and Minerva. Oh and Tom Riddle/Voldemort

Favourite film: Deathly Hallows, both parts. In my opinion, they were the only films that managed to capture the real soul of the books, the reason why I love this series more than any other novel.

Snape: I'll be the first Boo-er :/. I appreciate what Snape had done to bring down Voldemort and all, but like patriciarakel, I don't think he had any reason to be nasty to Neville, Harry and Hermione.

Favorite book: Prisoner of Azkaban(I love how full of twists that book was and Lupin is just awesome).
FAvorite movie: Deathly Hallows(I count both movies as one) and Chamber of Secrets, although I've kinda over-watched it lately.
Characters" Hermionie, Ron and Luna
Snape: i wouldn't say he's even close to my top characters, but from a literary stand point I think he's a brilliant character.
