So yeah, I love me some Zelda. :D I've played a bit of the original, Minish Cap, most of Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, and have just begun Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask.

YEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSS
Legend of Zelda is SO. GOOD. (Even if, for pretty much every game I've played, I needed to consult a walkthrough every ten minutes ...) I'd say I've played most of the Legend of Zelda games in existence. Ocarina of Time used to be my favorite, but now, it's definitely Twilight Princess. I recently did a play-through of Majora's Mask -- I don't really know why everyone thinks it's so bad. I loved it. Well, aside from some of the creepiness. I'll never get over Tatl saying, "Even though they're lovers, they look just like a mother and child!" Oh Legend of Zelda, you and your incest.

Re: Legend of Zelda

I am so behind on Zelda games. I only got around to buying Twilight Princess last month. =3c I love Majora's Mask and Wind Waker, though. Both have characterization which I felt was lacking in OoT. Majora's Mask is so dark and haunting, and the minutely-plotted world of the three days is so alive. Wind Waker's vibrant colors and daring art style just charmed me, and for once the puzzles were easy enough that a clumsy gamer like myself could get through the game with only the scantest help from a strategy guide (which was bought for me along with the game as a present). I've heard great things about Twilight Princess and can't wait to play it. I also think that one day I'll need to play Link's Awakening again. I got to the final dungeon and was stuck there.

LE SPAZ! I love these games. I really do.

The main characters of my novel were all OCs in a Zelda fanfiction at some point in my life (A.K.A. middle school). I enjoy walking around in my Zelda T-shirts, because people give weird looks to the little happy sunshiney optimistic girl walking around in a T-shirt with swords and arrows on it.

Also, I'm RESISTING the temptation to get Skyward Sword in November.

Actually, even if I did get it, I would never play it during November, because I'm busy writing, duh!

My favorite Zelda game is Twilight Princess. It's so PRETTY. And shiny. And I really like the character design, especially the costumes.

My favorites are Ocarina of Time, The Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess. I always have a hard time deciding between those three which is the best, I think I lean in favor of Twilight Princess.

GAH!! I forgot Skyward Sword comes out in November! D: What am I going to do?? I like your idea, Trethsparr, about rewarding yourself at the end of the month with it. Perhaps that is what I shall do. Hmmm...

Re: Legend of Zelda

Beh - Skyward Sword, as mentioned, will be on the Wii - it's an origin story for the Master Sword, and, it looks like, the Royal Family (Zelda isn't a princess in it). Of all the games released so far, it's the earliest (not saying that there won't be earlier ones, you never know!). I'm a Hyrule history geek, so I'm stupidly excited for it!

...So, anyone doing Zelda fic this year? I did it for the last two (actually, I did two in 2009!), and while my main one this year is original, I might do another Zelda fic if I manage my time well enough.

ZELDA <3

My one and only game love. Not not really but Zelda is the only series that I can play over and over and over and over again and still be excited. I'm actually going on another playthrough of Majora's Mask, which is my absolute favorite, without playing the song of inverse (or I believe that is what it is called) so this should be a challenge!

Sadly, I haven't played WW, TP, and I won't be getting my hands on Skyward Sword so at least my word count won't suffer. But really, this game is amazing, I love it. And the fandom is amazing. I especially like writing from the POV of the characters in Majora's Mask, there's so much creepyness and sadness in the game that makes it so beautiful.

I love Zelda, it is my true love of video games. Although I admit Portal is challenging it for the top spot.

I don't know how I feel about Skyward Sword, though. It is probably the first Zelda game I will rent rather than buy immediately. I really loved Twilight Princess and I'm not that interested to go back to a cell-shaded style. (I liked WW too but I thought keeping that series on the DS was a solid choice). I'm also not totally sold on this idea that they are throwing out the overworld/dungeon format? That is Zelda! Last time they messed with the format we got the second game and that was awful. ):

However... I also heard that there is going to be a touring Legend of Zelda orchestrated concert for the 25th anniversary next year so I am all over that.

I love Zelda, it was (besides Kirby for Gameboy) my first videogame ;) But Wind Waker wasn't that.. It was good, but when I talk about the Zelda I love I mean Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, Majoras Mask, Minish Cap - not the toon link.
Still, Wind Waker was pretty good as well.
I really am excited about Skyward Sword and I hope it'll be more difficult, Twilight Princess was waaaay to easy. It doesn't have to be as difficult as Majoras Mask, but at least OoT niveu would be cool. Hopefully I can stop myself from playing the game hours and hours, I still have to think at my NaNo novel.

Twilight Princess was the first Zelda game I ever played, and I loved it. I dressed up as Midna for Halloween that year. >.>

We don't have a Wii yet, but I'm not too sad about that. I'm actually wary about SS (yes, boo and hiss). Sorry, but after Twilight Princess, I'm biding my time before I chase down Zeldas.

My fav's are the Oracle games, ST and MM, in no particular order. My NaNo's mainly gonna draw from Ocarina of Time and Minish Cap, with a few refs to the other games. Windwaker is also high on my list. Yes, I couldn't stop laughing when I saw they gave us toon link, but the story and game play were pretty good. I mean, if anything in that game can actually scare people (You know you jumped when the Re-Deads screamed, too), then they put some effort into that game.

Can't wait to start writing, so I'm biding my time with "Hero mittens" (I knitted the Triforce of Courage into the left one) and figuring out how to knit a reversible Triforce hat. Made my guy a link hate the other day.

You're not alone; I'm not that sold on SS yet either.

Honestly I sometimes consider selling my Wii and just getting a gamecube again. I have TP for Gamecube so that's not an issue. I have Okami for PS2 so that's not a problem either. The only Wii game I have that I might want to play again is Smash Bros: Brawl, and... no one else will play that with me so it's kind of useless as well. There are just no good games that I want to buy for it, and I've owned my Wii for four years. ):

I will probably keep it long enough to play Skyward Sword and then just sell the console.

Okay, so I'm not the only one. I just think they started to get lazy when the graphics improved and the gimmicks piled in. That's the main drive my favs. Yes, ST depends on the mic and the stylus, but it's in a way that fits. Actually I loved how the final battle played out with both screens.

Re: Legend of Zelda

Well, I just thought it was odd because they seemed to have developed a system of realistic games = console and cel-shaded games = handheld. That seemed to be working for them, and let them play with both timelines and produce more games. Spirit Tracks wasn't my favorite, and I didn't think it was quite as good as PH, but it was still a fun game with some really nice music and interesting new mechanics.

I think I read somewhere that they had to go with simpler graphics in SS because of something to do with Wii Motion+? There was a reason.

But I'm just very leery of any game that changes the fundamental setup of the games. Nintendo tried this with Link's Adventure. It was awful. I think I played that game half an hour before I threw it against the wall. Twilight Princess was amazing, I wish we would get more like that. I mean, I heard people complained about the graphics but I thought they were gorgeous. The world was expansive and fun to explore, which is really all I want from a Zelda game.

I'm willing to try SS, but I'm definitely going to rent it rather than buying it outright. :/

Re: Legend of Zelda

It's not because of Motion+, the graphics - it's because they knew the Wii couldn't do hyper-realistic graphics, so they went with something more stylised and artistic. And it really is gorgeous! It's like being in a painting :) (There's a filter on it so stuff on the distance looks more impressionistic, it works REALLY nicely.)

And did you mean Link's Awakening, the Gameboy game? Or Adventure of Link, the NES game? AoL definitely had problems, but they mostly had to do with gameplay and being FREAKING IMPOSSIBLE, not the structure (let's put it this way, I have a friend who can finish LoZ in three hours flat... who has never finished AoL). LA is actually really well-loved.

And I do honestly love TP, it's in my top three - it was expansive, but parts of it were pretty... empty. Gorgeous scenery, not much to do in it. SS has a smaller geographical range, but it's more dense - there's more stuff to do in it, and there's stuff that keeps you going back. Like finding entirely new areas after getting new items. It's not, 'poke around in one area for ten minutes, find everything that can be found, never go back again'.

Do give SS a try! It looks completely amazing :) It may not beat Ocarina for me, but I think it's going to come pretty close...

Re: Legend of Zelda

I'm not asking for hyper-realism like any of the XBox stuff has, because I find all those crisp edges hard to look at. But I thought Twilight Princess was a great balance in realistic but not too perfect, and I'd like to see more of that. I don't mind the cell-shaded style, but it does work best on small platforms like the DS. I don't know.

I meant Adventure of Link, yes. I've played Link's Awakening, it was a cute little game. Not the best, but then, I started out with OoT and have trouble with the top-down style.

I thought TP had a decent enough amount of areas where you could find hidden places with later items, like the spinner. Mostly I love it for the story, though. I want more Midna. ):

I will try it, like I said, I'm just not immediately in love with it as I have been before with Zelda games. That and the Wii being kind of a useless system for me are what is making me reluctant to buy SS new.

That's fair enough. I really do love the style of TP, but I also love SS - it isn't really cel-shading so much as it looks painterly. Not realism, but gorgeous in and of itself.

And right, okay. AoL definitely is a black sheep - and I know what you mean about top-down games! I canNOT get to the second temple in LttP without almost dying, and I didn't even get to the first one in LoZ. Sob.

And yeah, true - although its sparseness has come up quite a bit. If you consider TP to have enough content, SS is apparently going to blow your MIND ;) It's supposed to be just... packed with stuff, weird hidden places, all sorts of stuff! And the story is supposed to be amazing as well.

But yes. Games are subjective - I think SS looks amazing and fully expect it to end up in my top three, but not everyone has to think the same.

Well, there's one advantage to the Wii over the Gamecube - with virtual console, you can download hundreds of old games, including at least five Zelda games (LoZ, AoL, LttP, OoT, MM). The Gamecube doesn't have anything like that.

Re: Legend of Zelda

Yeah, except... OoT and MM are already available on Gamecube via earlier ports/promo discs, which I have. I've got LttP for GBA, and I'm not really interested in the first two games. So there's no reason to pay extra to download them again. The Virtual Console is just massively limited-- it's been forever since I checked, but when I first got my Wii I got 2000 points for the VC and did not ever spend them because I couldn't find anything I wanted to download, which was mostly classic N64 games. I think I finally downloaded Mario Kart 64 (but then never played it) and they don't seem to have games like Banjo-Kazooie that I would really like to replay.

Compare this to XBox and all the fun, original games they have in their Arcade, with new releases coming out all the time, and I have no reason to even look at Wii's sad little Virtual Console. It's even worse now that OoT is available for 3DS (and they seem to be re-releasing other N64 titles there as well) which gives you portability and classic titles.

I love Nintendo, but they really did massively fail as far as online play and downloadable games go. That's not necessarily a problem-- they are targeting casual and non-gamers-- but it does mean the Wii is much less appealing to me than other systems. I'm really only keeping it for Zelda, and I probably won't buy the Wii U at all.

But "why have a system when you don't use it?"-- that's pretty much exactly why I'm considering getting rid of the Wii.

I do still have all my Gamecube games, and most of the games are still cheaply available at places like GameStop... although I admit I was shocked when I saw WW listed new on Amazon for something like $120. o_o

Heh, true XD I still think, though, if you mostly play Gamecube games, and you have a system that plays Gamecube games perfectly well AND the other stuff that you can only get on the Wii, then it'd be better to keep that instead of going through all the fuss of selling the Wii and buying a Gamecube. Unless GBA connectivity is really important to you, I guess...

$120? o.O That's nuts!

I know! I'm pretty sure GameStop still has GC games like that for at most $30. o_o

Okay, so I read the review in game informer, and it does look pretty cool.... Okay. It might be worth it, but to get a Wii so late...? For one game...? I mean, we already got a Gamecube.

Course, as of yesterday I've no idea how I got through TP a second time. I thought it had a slow beginning, then I watched my guy playthrough it... I seriously was about to whip out my DS and say "Lemme know when you get out of the intro, dude." I know there are games that have a longer intro than 3-4 hours, but still...

It definitely is a slow intro, though you can get through it fairly quick if you work at it.

I understand the sentiment, though... I keep wanting to replay Kingdom Hearts II, but I flat-out refuse to go through that awful 3-hour section with Roxas again. D:

I'm up to the first temple, and while it's taking me a while to get used to doing really precise sword swings (apparently I twist my wrist a lot unconsciously when swinging?) and thus got the world's most embarrassing Game Over to a DEKU BABA, I am loving the hell out of it.

Who knows? Maybe, next year, I'll be doing Skyward fic instead of Zelda fic!

So you have to slash precisely to hit things? Is this the Wii Motion+ stuff? Do you need an extra controller for that or something? Because I still have my original Wiimotes and never bothered to get whatever upgrade they offered. (Never bothered to buy those stupid Wiimote condoms, either. They look awful.)

I'm a bit surprised because most Wii games I've played have you flail wildly and then the character on screen does whatever. I don't know that I want it to be more precise... Okami would have been better in some parts if the Wiimote was more forgiving about the reception.

It doesn't have to be too precise, and you don't need the little thingy-ma-bob to go with it either!!!
But flailing doesn't work fo' sho'. It's REALLY GOOD.
So far, the MOST AMAZING THING I HAVE LAID MY EYES ON!!!!!
It sucks though because I'm letting my little sisters play too so our batteries are dying AND they don't let me play it because I'm farther than them!

You supposed to have the Wii Motion Plus thing for it to work properly, but I think they are pretty cheap. And there are also controllers that come with them built in now, which is a lot less annoying than having it sticking out on the bottom of your controller. It supposed to move with how you move, but it does not work as well as I would like which makes sword fighting difficult. :/ Maybe I just need to get more used to it.

I can’t wait to see what the storyline is like in the Skyward Sword, I’ve read it is the pre-sequel to the Ocarina of Time! It sounds very cool. Me, my brother, and my sister are busy saving up...
I just found out they are also making a Manga adaption of the Skyward Sword, (like they did with some of the other Legend of Zelda games, like the OoT, MM, and others)!!

For MotionPlus, you can get a little attachment to go on the end of your Wiimote (they're pretty cheap, I believe), or you can get Wiimotes with it built in. If you get the special edition bundle, for instance, you get a gold MotionPlus Wiimote with the Zelda logo on it :D And yeah, it does take a bit to get used to, but once you've got good at it, it's pretty damn fun!

Basically they revamped the first one, twice, and gave ALttP a sequel. There's no way to buy it (or it's impossibly rare), and it was only released in Japan via satellite. Interesting little idea that Nintendo never utilized again. :/

I was watching my guy go through map one on LoZ. He was done with the first objective crazy early, but he had a lot of fun with it. Because each game was broadcast during a certain time, you only have around an hour to beat each part of the game, unless you get the version that plays out like a regular Zelda game. In at least one of the "the ALttP sequel), there's side quests that you only have minutes to find and do. A very interesting concept that I think I would like to see in a mainstream LoZ title (just cuz I reply them a lot, anyway).

Re: Legend of Zelda

Okay, so I finally rented SS and then even went out and bought the stupid Wii Motion+ thing (would really have been nice to know that was REQUIRED, Nintendo. Still mad about that.) Played for 2 1/2 hours or so-- just about to leave the Sky City.

So far? Really not seeing why this game deserves the hype it has gotten. All the characters are bland bland bland, nothing like the interesting relationships we had in TP, the art is...eh? Okay I guess, although Link's face is weird. He looks like a girl. And the controls...

I don't know, maybe it's because this is the first game I've really played with motion-sensitive controls, but I find everything less intuitive rather than more. Thank god the "race" was rigged because it took me like half an hour to flail my way around enough to even have half an idea what I was doing. I still didn't have any finesse at it, so then it took me another dozen tries to land in the middle of that stupid target. All I really want is a proper standard controller that doesn't require me to think in three directions because I'm awful at that. D:

All in all it was a frustrating experience-- I've decided I'll play through the first dungeon or so, but currently I'm not actually looking forward to playing more, and this may be one Zelda game I leave well alone. Maybe I'll just watch a Let's Play to get the story-- there are some interesting Hyrule history nuggets buried in there, but thus far the rest of the game has not made it interesting enough for me to play just for that.

Okay, I played another or so and at least some of my frustration has abated. Although I admit, I was pretty pissed off when I almost got my ass killed by a pair of *Deku Baba* because I didn't know you had to slash them in the matching direction of their mouths. That is the kind of thing that upsets me. I just want to kill things! I don't want to think about what direction I move my hand while doing so!

However, the fights went well enough once I figured things out. It's still a steeper learning curve that I would like. I still can't figure out how to properly 'balance' on the rope bridges and find it all a bit unnecessary. But whatever.

The forest area shows off the art style a lot more, and I do see the appeal in it. Link looks a lot better in his standard green outfit, too.

Still not a fan of the stamina bar. That's probably my biggest gripe so far. Not sure how I'm going to survive boss fights if Link is constantly folding over and wheezing for breath. :/ And I miss being able to constantly roll my way through the countryside. But the rest is slowly growing on me. Those little penguin-dekus are pretty damn adorable.

Ok, I finally started playing today, and I got through the first dungeon. And I love this game so much. The way it looks is amazing, and the music is awesome. I will admit the controls can take some getting used to, but once you do, they aren't too bad.

Also, in regards to the rope bridges, what I do is I just move the wiimote to the side I want Link to go to, and keep moving it that way until he's there. Hope that helps out a little.

And the only enemy I've had any trouble with is the Skulltulas. And maybe the gold Deku Babas. But not the regular ones.

And the stamina bar is incredibly stupid, and it feels pointless.

Re: Legend of Zelda

I finally figured out the rope bridges-- you control it by holding the wiimote vertically and tipping it side to side. I kept trying to hold it flat, pointed at the TV, and tilting it that way, that's why I kept failing at it.

Skulltulas are annoying.

I got to the first boss fight yesterday; took a second try and buying potions to beat him. It was quite a tricky boss. D: Now I'm doing sidequests to avoid running around in the lava area.

So far I'm getting the vibe that this game is, hmmmm, like a weird mix of TP and WW. It's very like WindWaker in that it has sidequests everywhere-- but they don't seem to be quite as spread out, so they're less annoying. It's also got obvious ties to TP in its use of place names-- specifically the Lanayru/Eldin/Faron regions.

I'll admit, most of my curiosity for this game is how its going to set up and expand the mythology. Why do they refer to only one Goddess when we know there are three? (And there are powers later on clearly named after the three goddesses?) Just when and how does the kingdom of Hyrule come about? These are the things I am interested in. I hope they give me some interesting answers, because none of the characters are all that interesting-- except maybe the Demon Lord. He's creepy.

I'm not immediately entranced by the game the way I was with TP, still-- there, I was genuinely worried about the fate of all the characters, but I feel no connection to anyone in SS. I find Fi more annoying than helpful-- her boss advice is good, but I really DON'T need you to tell me every time I'm down to 3 hearts or my shield is damaged, thanks. :/ I'm not sure she's quite as annoying as Navi, but she's certainly nowhere near the awesome that was Midna.

I'll probably play through the game and complete it, but I doubt that I will bother to actually buy and replay it. Like Majora's Mask, it'll probably be a game I only play once.

Re: Legend of Zelda

Fi is definitely helpful as far as boss fights and enemies go, especially since this game changed all the rules, but.... she's not really a character. Or at least, because she is an emotionless spirit of a sword, she's a very flat character. Maybe this becomes more interesting as the game progresses, but one of the things I liked about Midna, besides her trickster personality, was how much you could see an actual relationship develop between her and Link throughout the game. When Midna is nearly killed and you have to run to Zelda to save her... I was genuinely worried for her and rather upset. There was emotion there, which got me very invested in the story and the world.

That emotion is something I'm finding very lacking in SS. Even the people Link is supposed to have relationships with are pretty flat and there's no real connection. Granted this isn't too different from most Zelda games, but I really liked the directions TP went in and I'm disappointed to see a return to the uncaring NPCs.

tl;dr -- Fi is better for tactics/utility, but Midna was a more interesting character overall.

I do hope that Fi becomes more interesting... like I said, I'm curious about how this game is setting up the other games' mythology. I heard that this game was supposed to be about how the Master Sword got created... I do want to know about that. I don't even mind that Fi is so flat and scientific since she's, you know, a sword, it's just that no one else has any character either so her flatness is even more obvious.

FlameRaven, don't worry - the latter parts of the game get in to the mythology in a BIG way! There's parts that are generally gasp-out-loud surprising.

And some of your complaints, I think, are YMMV-type things. I love strategising about how to stop each enemy! The Beetle, I think, is my favourite item of any Zelda game to date. The stamina thing adds a BIG challenge - you'll have to work out how to utilise it in a big way later on. And I adore the characters - I think they have a lot more life than other Zelda characters. You mentioned feeling genuinely worried with Midna was dying? (Believe me, I sympathise, I had a D8 expression the whole time during that sequence.) That's how I feel about saving Zelda this time around. Gotta get to my girl!

.... you know, telling me that this game only gets that much *harder* as it goes on is not actually going to encourage me to play more.

Quite honestly, I just about threw down the controller in disgust at the stupid find-5-pieces-of-the-key to get into the Earth Temple, because pieces #4 and #5 were incredibly difficult to find. I don't even know if I'm going to make it through this dungeon. Maybe I'll struggle through, but... honestly? After that I think I'm just going to go find a Let's Play or video walkthrough and watch that. This game is too hard and my frustration at the difficulty is outweighing any enjoyment I'm having. I can only convince myself to play an hour or so at a time, which because there are so many sidequests and everything is so hard means I only get through tiny pieces of the game.

It's just not fun, and it's not worth the time and effort it takes. So... yeah, I give up. I tried, but I just can't do it.

Re: Legend of Zelda

Clearly I should stop making posts whenever I'm stuck at a part of the game, because I always feel bad about it later.

I think the challenge level of this game just threw me for a loop because I didn't expect it. This is Zelda. Zelda games have been running on mostly the same formula for 25 years. This game is changing up a lot of the formula and it caught me off-guard.

I guess I should make it clearer that, even when I am screaming in frustration at the screen, I do appreciate that they are doing some cool things. The Beetle is very neat, especially the Hook Beetle. I really like the fact that you can fill up your bomb bag with bomb flowers instead of always having to run into town. I do like that they are integrating the treasures system from WW/PH/ST into a more 'realistic' style game, although I do feel like SS achieves what WW wanted to be. I am mildly impressed that the game is managing to mostly have new weapons like the Beetle and the Bellows, rather than the stock weapons that always show up. The new puzzles ARE quite innovative, even when they make me confused and angry.

I've been doing better since I started looking up video guides on Youtube. I'm currently about 3/4 through the Lanayru Mining Facility and much less angry at the game in general. I'm having a lot of fun collecting goddess cubes and gratitude crystals and generally procrastinating on dungeons. I do wish the puzzles weren't *quite* so weird, but I can probably get over it.

I'll admit, part of what convinced me to keep going was that I managed to beat LIMBO, which, although much shorter, was way more brutal in its puzzles. If I can do that, I'm not going to let a Zelda game beat me. >_>

Anyways, if I may have a few minutes of everyone's time to do a small advertisement, which I promise is related to the topic. From Dec. 16-19, a group of people known as The SpeedGamers will be hosting a 72 hour long marathon of Legend of Zelda games to raise money for Rockin' H Ranch. Their marathon will be including all of the Zelda games released to date, including Skyward Sword. You can find their website here. Please help support the cause.

Anyways, back to talking about Zelda normally, it looks like motion controls will be here to stay. Opinions?

I think I'm going to finish the game before I say yes or no to motion controls in general. Right now I'm still slightly annoyed leaning towards neutral.

It may be a moot point anyway since they'll have to make the Wii U REALLY impressive for me to even consider buying it.

Mostly... I think I'd be okay with motion controls if they tone down the precision swordplay. That's okay for boss fights, but I am constantly getting killed by those goddamn yellow deku baba that require two different-direction sword slices. I've taken to simply bombing them instead because I just don't want to deal with that crap. Most of the other stuff is okay though. Although I do hope the stamina bar goes away after this game.

Re: Legend of Zelda

Ok, here's something I didn't know about until after my play-through. Apparently, once you get to the part where you have to speak with the three dragons, if you speak with the Lanayru dragon first, then talk to the Goron after completing that quest, and then save, the game won't trigger the events for the other two dragons correctly, thus rendering the game unwinnable unless you start from the beginning. Easiest way to avoid the glitch is to speak with the other two dragons first, since you can speak with them in any order. However, Nintendo is also planning to release a patch to fix this. If you have internet enabled for the Wii, it's just a simply download. Otherwise they're asking that you send in either the Wii itself or an SD card.

Also, in other news, there's going to be an official artbook released in Japan, titled Hyrule Historia. No word yet on an English translation yet. What do you guys think the odds are that it will get translated? Personally, I think the odds will be good, considering the series has a sizable English-speaking fanbase.

Someone on my Facebook mentioned the Hyrule Historia book. As I told him, I think it's likely the book WILL be translated in English, especially since Nintendo is going to the trouble of doing a 25th anniversary symphonic tour across the US, and that book is very much the kind of thing you could sell along with the symphony tickets. I mean, Zelda is one of the three pillars of Nintendo, so I think it will get translated.

However, I also think that there is very likely to be a fan-translation and scan of the book up within, oh, probably a few weeks of the books release. That's just how the internet rolls.

Hey, at least it's in your state. I'm just hoping that I get lucky and they do a symphony in Chicago or something (3 hours away) because I have little hope that they will actually come to Indianapolis where I live. ):

Although, we did get the Video Games Live concert because we host GenCon here so.... maybe Nintendo will be clever and realize they could schedule a symphony event in a city where 20,000 gamers visit every year~

I can hope.

Re: Legend of Zelda

Hmmm. Well, I admit, I ended up going through the last 2/3 of the game by watching Youtube walkthroughs; I could not bring myself to play through Farore's Silent Realm. Seriously, what sadistic jerk at Nintendo thought up those challenges?! That's just mean.

I'm nearly to the end, and... yeah, unless the final boss/cutscenes are overwhelmingly good, I can't agree that this is the "best Zelda game ever." I'll probably do a more detailed review of it once I've seen it all, but it gets good marks in everything except story and characters. Unfortunately, those two areas are the most important areas to me, so I will have to forever hold Twilight Princess as my favorite, as that was the game that did the best in those areas.

I don't think it's a bad game, really, and it certainly is doing some interesting things, but... my frustration constantly outweighed any fun I had with it. When I can enjoy the game just as well (or better) watching it online as I can playing it, something is definitely wrong.

Re: Legend of Zelda

I wonder what Retro will do for the series, if Nintendo opts to let them have it? I loved Metroid Prime 1 and 2. 3 was a bit "meh" for me, but I guess I was unused to Samus suddenly having colleagues and such.

As far as waiting, I think Miyamoto said no one minds how long a good game takes, but everyone remembers a bad game. I don't mind waiting if they come up with something really innovatitve.

Slightly off topic: Am I correct in thinking they only had one bad chick "main" boss in the series? I'm not counting OoT's Twinrova even though you fight her in an OoX linked game. Veran or Oracle of Ages is all I can remember and I kinda liked her. You could see her messing with the world throughout, which I think only happens again in Minish Cap (no, I still didn't play SS so I can't say). Think the series could use another bad chick?

I wouldn't mind if the series had another villainous female, but considering how often the series introduces entirely new main villains, and the number of bosses that are human at all, I doubt we'll be seeing it happen anytime soon.

As for what Retro would do with the series, who can say? But considering their other works have been well received, I'm confident we'd be getting one of the best Zelda titles in the series if they were allowed to develop a game for the series.

Re: Legend of Zelda

It's not that uncommon for Zelda games to take several years to develop. I think Twilight Princess was announced in 2003 but not released until late 2006.

Main console games were:

1998 - Ocarina of Time
2000 - Majora's Mask
2003 - Windwaker
2006 - Twilight Princess
2011 - Skyward Sword

The gap between TP and SS was a little extra long but we did get both Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks in that time. I enjoyed both, although I thought ST was not quite as good as PH.

I'm wary about upcoming Zelda games... it seems like Nintendo wants to release the Wii U within the next few years, so any major Zelda game would be on that platform. I have zero intention of buying the Wii U, and I don't see any point in buying a 3DS, since there are still dozens of games I want to play for the standard DS. So it seems unlikely I'll end up playing most future Zelda games.

Re: Legend of Zelda

Well, considering the main boss is Ganondorf like 85% of the time, it's not surprising.

They have female bosses sometimes... although Gohma and Koume/Kotake/Twinrova are the only ones I can immediately think of. I think the Zelda manga might have tried to claim that Volvagia was female, but I don't remember.

It is true that the ladies don't usually get a very prominent role in Zelda games. It would be nice to see a little more feminism in future games, although honestly that is a problem that most video games still have. For some reason companies cannot seem to understand that women play video games. :/ Very sad.

I just hope that Nintendo goes back to making good games instead of enforcing gimmicks all over the place. Don't get me wrong, motion controls, touch controls and the like can still be incorporated in a game and have it feel natural. I just don't want to be forced into them, you know?

It's kinda sad that I'm still wary of SS even when a Wii was almost given to us. My mom only bought the Wii cuz she thought I'd be home to play it (despite me telling her I planned on moving out with my guy), so she wanted to give it to us. I didn't want it cuz I can't see having yet another console for only a handful of games.

I just finished powering up my sword! Finally going to find Zelda. Though I do wish that the story was deeper, I have a feeling that I'm near the end now. I don't want it to end yet; and I want to know Fi's backstory.

Oh, and for all those almost at the Eldin Flame - try not to play the boss battle around family. The cutscene beforehand is a little awkward. (Like the Skyview Temple cutscene, only a little more dramatic)

I've followed this series for years and this is the first time where I'm just like, "No." It wouldn't be so bad if they weren't aware that this one was made 25 years after the first (they even refer to that ingame).

A story from DL's pov is cool. One, we only see him in three games (OoT,FSA and a non essential fight in ST. Maybe 4 if AoL counts), so it's a fresher pov. Two, outside of the FSA manga, no one "officially" explores him, so the possibilities are endless.

I should have got the gamecube version back when it came out, but at the time I thought I might actually get a Wii, so I waited. It was only after I actually played on a Wii that I was like "DO NOT WANT." I guess I'd better check if my gamecube still works (it's been gathering dust for a few years now). Maybe Beyond Good and Evil deserves a replay, now I think about it...

Re: Legend of Zelda

I'll probably be getting the Wii U as soon as I'm able to do so after launch, but that's mostly just for the sake of having it around for the gems that come out for it as opposed to any actual interest in the system itself.

And they most likely are planning a Zelda title for the Wii U. After all, we're talking about one of Nintendo's most popular franchises. However, with the fairly recent release of Skyward Sword, unless the system gets delayed past 2012 or something, I doubt we'll be seeing such a title around launch time. But I'm going to be optimistic and say that when it does get released, it will be worth the wait.

Here is a question. What are your favorite characters (besides Link and Zelda...) in the Legend of Zelda? What do you like most about them?

Re: Legend of Zelda

Hmm... There's a few.

Midna. She doesn't seem to care all that much that Link's the hero at first, but she's not a jerk about it. Plus, I like how her friendship grows over the course of TP. I was genuinely sad when you got to the game.

Linebeck. He's awesome. Period. Wasn't crazy about PH, but I liked him.

Happy Mask Saleman. He's just so odd. Course, the main reason I put him on here is the scene in the beginning of MM where he shakes you. I love that part.

Oooh. People! (Hi, everyone, I haven't been to the forums in five months. Whoops. Just signed up for the August Camp NaNoWriMo and thought I'd poke my head in...)

Favourite characters? Sheik (who I view as a seperate character), Groose (hands down, favourite character in Skyward Sword!), Midna, Telma, Saria, Navi (yes, really!), Byrne, Alfonzo, and Shad. ...I like a lot of characters, heh.

For the Links and Zeldas, incidentally, they vary. A lot. Favourite Link, hands down, is Ocarina, followed by Skyward Sword, then Twilight Princess. Favourite Zelda is aaalmost a three-way tie with Ocarina just edging out over Skyward Sword and Spirit Tracks. Some I just am not very fond of - Twilight Princess Zelda is kind of... lacking in personality, I find.

Re: Legend of Zelda

I'll be majorly hyped up about the Wii U if the third parties cooperate more(some seem really eager about developing for it, unlike for the wii).
It seems kind of like a whole different console, except that you can still use the wii remote. And the graphics might actually be up to standard with the rest of the next gen. Rumor is the next xbox will be only 20% more powerful. Plus Nintendo wants the hardcore crowd back.
The controller looks clunky, but they might change the design. Testers say it's comfortable enough.
I also saw the demos for it online, and what it's capable of in terms of innovation and that's what really excites me. Imagine if third parties got more involved, you could have a game with mindblowing gameplay mechanics.
I'll probably get it because it's Nintendo, and that means more Zelda :3
