My boyfriend read this as part of his classes before student teaching English, and he passed it on to me. It's "The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak.
I'm not 100% in love with all of his techniques (sometimes they work beautifully, other times... meh?), but overall.... Wow. This is just such a quirky, phenomenal and touching book that takes place during the Holocaust but somehow doesn't focus on the suffering.
It's the techniques and style that left me unable to finish this book. I got half-way through and couldn't read on any further. I can't comment on the story because I haven't finished it. It just felt like I was reading, waiting for the story to come along, and it never did.
I agree, sometimes the techniques do work very well. Initially I liked the way this book was written. There were a few confusing metaphors in there, though. Some of them didn't make any sense.
I actually really enjoyed this book (after my prof told us it was death narrating, I though it might be death but I wasn't sure XD, and after the first 20 pages). We had to read it for my english class but I'm glad we did. I liked the ending and I hated it. I'm not really sure what else to say except that I could probably disect the book for you and tell you comparisions between The Book Thief and Speak XDD. I'm now getting started to do a 10 page take home exam on The Book Thief and Speak so yeppp.
^This. To an extent I can understand why some people don't like The Book Thief because of the style, but personally I love it. It's beautiful without segueing (sp?) into purple prose. I love how Zusak showed WWII from the side of the average German citizen. I liked the ending too, though every single time I read it I can't help but cry. Whenever I read it I find myself falling in love with all of the various characters all over again, and it makes me both happy and sad because I know what's coming.
The Book Thief legitimately CHANGED MY LIFE It was a book I had to read for school, and at first I didn't want to - not to mention my sister said it was weird and really bad. But at that time, I had been going through that phase everyone hits when they're just like "Epiphany. I am going to die one day." And reading this book got rid of every fear I had. Not even joking I had such a crush on Death, I could never be scared of it again
This book made me cry SO MUCH. ;___; which was awkward as I was reading it as an e-book at work while I waited for things to load. So I really hoped that no one would come and ask if I was okay.
I want this Death, Gaiman's Death, and Pratchett's Death to all hang out with the Lady on the Grey for tea or something.
I picked it up at a Costco-it was on sale and I really really liked the summary-and I finished it in three hours. And I read it over and over again, and it's just. So hauntingly beautiful, so poetic, so...I love it so much.
Everything was just heartbreakingly beautiful. :( I teared up when Rudy died........and that ending.

I loved this book. It was both beautiful and heartbreaking. I managed to fall in love with almost every character, and the ending made me cry. I personally loved the writing style.... no other book has torn my heart into tiny little pieces quite the same way.
I reread The Book Thief for a book club a while ago, and it was terrible because I knew what was going to happen, so I was close to tear before I was even 15 pages into it... And I'd forgotten that *SPOILERS* everyone died at the end and then I was really really sad.
But I loved the book, and I love the way it's written. It's... refreshing, is the word I think. Something completely different from what I normally read.
*Spoilers I think, maybe, except they don't make sense unless you read the book... Maybe* I must say, I bawled when she was holding his accordion. And when she kissed Rudy(Yes, yes, not in that order but it was the order I thought of them). I was at school, and everyone kept asking me what was wrong. Nothing is wrong at all with that book.
I must say, I was glad Max came back but I was still heart broken. Just thinking about it makes me want to cry again.

Anyway, just felt I had to get this out.
Re: The Book Thief
I liked this book.
Have you read I am the Messenger by him? I listened to it on audiobook and it's good.

I love The Book Thief so much. I Am the Messenger is phenomenal too, though not quite so much.

Re: The Book Thief
This book is phenomenal. In my brain it fits into the same category as To Kill a Mockingbird.
