I watched the show over the summer and I absolutely loved it. Pinkie Pie was my favorite until Luna returned, but she's still best pony out of the mane six. I think the reason why I like this show is everypony is treated as a character first. They all have dreams and ambitions as characters, which can lead to conflict as much as outside forces can. Seriously, "Suited For Success" is my favorite episode. So Rarity is my favorite pony, as well as Twilight, because I can relate to her awkward social nerdiness (and that she has Impostor Syndrome, based on someone else's speculations on another pony forum), and then Pinkie Pie for her breakdown episode because again, I can relate to not knowing whether people actually like me or not. And Dash is just so much fun. Also, am I the only the who doesn't like Fluttershy? Some focus on conflict between characters because of their personalities clashing, others pit the ponies against outside antagonists. Writing is the goal, and don't let silly things like pre-made characters keep you from telling YOUR story. Trying to not spoil anything, but I don't think Pinkie is going to have much resemblance at all to her show character/s at first in my story. Let the story and characters flow where they will, and have fun. Quick suggestions that I follow, though, if you really are worried: 1. Even though you're doing a fanfic, draw from other sources too. Who do the cast remind you of in your own life and in other media, and can you base reactions and dialogue off of their interactions? 2. If you deviate a little, consider it character development. Fluttershy had learned to "hop, skip, and jump" by the time Feeling Pinkie Keen rolled around, and though Rarity still hates being messy, she's learned to cope a lot more ("Afraid to get DIRTY?!"). 3. Alright, not sure if this is just something I do or if it can be learned, but when writing dialogue, listen to the lines in your head before writing them out, and do so in your mental approximation of the character's voice. If you can't hear the character saying something like it in your head, then that line should go to someone else. (Quick example: I remember an interview with the writers of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and they spoke of a scene where they felt Xander was talking too much, so they gave a line of his to another character. When Joss Whedon read the script, he stopped at the line and said, "You wrote this for Xander, didn't you?") A character is a feeling, more than a list of characteristics. Trust your gut, and at the end of the month hopefully you'll get a ear-flop/knee twitch/eye-flutter result (e.g. beautiful rainbow) in your mind for what you've accomplished. It's the sort of thing that would stand out quite strangely on my desk, given how spartan and academic it is. I did however order a pair of propaganda posters for the Solar Empire and New Lunar Republic. Those will make fantastic additions to my collection of 1917 Bolshevik propaganda. It's amazing how prolific and easy to integrate MLP is into pretty much any other setting. I've never seen a fandom write so many enjoyable crossover stories like this one has.
