I'm doing a story where one of the side plots is basically Snow White, and one of the side characters is Snow White (though I gave her a normal name). The thing is there is no place in it for the seven dwarves so I was wondering if that would annoy you as a reader or if you think it's fine. Please let me know!

Were the seven dwarves a Disney invention, or am I thinking of Sleeping Beauty and the three good fairies? Disney does invent things from time to time, or they took a very specific adaption of it.

One re-telling of Snow White, mirror and all, is Gail Carson Levine's story entitled "Fairest". Except instead of dwarves, the not-too-attractive young lady ends up running underground in the cover of trolls or goblins or someother such underworldly creature, however they appreciate her beauty more down there. But that's a minor part of the plot in comparison to the wild insanities caused by the new queen of the throne forbidding singing in a culture that revolves around it since she's consumed by her magic mirror.

You don't need dwarves for Snow White, just a whole lot of jealousy. Their absence would not annoy me, but having miniature old men around does make for comic relief.

The original grimm verison does have the dwarves. Thanks for your opinion btw

It wouldn't bother me, but I'm hardly ever bothered by things in stories, so...

I've heard of versions of the 'Snow White' tale where the dwarves weren't dwarves, but they were seven brothers.

Without the "dwarfs", you dont really have a Snow White story, you have something else.

As someone above stated, they wouldnt necessarily have to be actual "dwarfs" (nor 7 in number); depending upon your spin.

But its a pretty essential part of the story that SW has to be in some place "away" from the Wicked Queen where SW has integrated into the community and where the WQ comes to search her out.

Yeah, they don't have to be dwarfs - there's a movie actually where they're simply woodsmen.

Equally, there's always Snow White and Rose Red. With the bear and the gnome. People always seem to forget that one...

But Rose Red is an entirely different story with shapeshifting princes! It's just the name they have in common.

I know... But it still totally doesn't get the love it should...

Yeah, Red Rose is a different story. The thing is it's more of a side story and my MC wouldn't necessarily know where she was once she was away. I might work the dwarves in, in some fashion, but it would probably just be a brief mentioning of it.

It doesn't have to be a twist on Snow White, since you said it was a side plot. It could just be a reference, and a reference doesn't have to go all the way with the original.
I've referenced to a lot of fairy tales, but very few of them follow through with every detail of the original. I've had Red Riding Hood but it's not her grandmother she's visiting, or The Little Mermaid but it's not a sea witch she gets help from.
So I'd be totally ok with it. :)
