This genre is vast. What sets it apart from all others is the inclusion of the impossible. Magic and mythical creatures abound. The only limitations are the ones you choose. Want to ride on a gryphon? Battle the legions of the undead? Discover the high school custodian is some kind of legendary creature? This is the place for you.
Because fantasy is so vast and varied, we will include links to threads on some of the possible sub-genres, so you can find writers of similar themes or milieus, as well as the most popular threads.

I do not think they are synonymous either. "Urban" means something that has to do with a city or similar populated area. Jim Butcher's Dresden Files are urban fantasy, as are the numerous similar series out there. On the other hand, a story that takes place way out in the country, for example about someone discovering faeries in an ancient forest in the modern world, would not be urban fantasy.
As an addendum, here is the first paragraph of the Wikipedia entry on Urban Fantasy:
"Urban fantasy is a sub-genre of fantasy defined by place; the fantastic narrative has an urban setting. Many urban fantasies are set in contemporary times and contain supernatural elements, making them a sub-genre of Contemporary fantasy. However, the stories can take place in historical, modern, or futuristic periods. The prerequisite is that they must be primarily set in a city."
And yet a story set in ye oldie Castletown is considered high fantasy, not urban. It gets very confusing when you look at all the sub-genres; not everyone will agree on definitions. For that matter, a lot of people can't agree on what fantasy means too.
And if you want a link to urban fantasy, make the thread and then ask me to link it.
I'm sure we could all argue about the definitions of the many many many sub-genres of Fantasy till we're all blue in the face. Although I must say that I think High Fantasy is very similar to Epic Fantasy (The two are often used interchangeably) except that high fantasy is slightly smaller (or less epic lol) in scope.
Since many threads have been relocated over the past several days, here's a few words of advice concerning what to post in the Fantasy forum.
-Topics within the fantasy genre (world building, magic, death/romance/whatever in fantasy) -Threads to connect with authors with similar interests (the sub-genre forums, in particular) -Help with your fantasy plot or fantasy characters
Threads that do not fall into one of those categories may be moved. If you feel that a thread should not have been moved, send a message to Dragonchilde.

Re: Welcome to the Fantasy Forum
What about urban fantasy?
Re: Welcome to the Fantasy Forum
I was under the impression that "contemporary fantasy" is synonymous to "urban fantasy."
Also, I don't generally create these threads. If you want something added to the list, feel free to message me. :)
Re: Welcome to the Fantasy Forum
I've never heard the two used interchangeably until now.

Re: Welcome to the Fantasy Forum
Plus I've heard Urban Fantasy being applied to Fantasy in any urban area in the last 100 or 200 years, Which is far from contemporary.:P
