Concerning Excerpts:

Novel excerpts should not be posted in the forums. Use your profiles. You can edit them there, but not in the forums (as you may have noticed).

Novel excerpts may be removed by the moderators.

In December, a forum will open for critiques, feedback, and novel swaps.

You can exchange e-mails with writing buddies, but it's not recommended to post e-mail addresses on a public forum. Use NaNoMail to exchange information.

Thank you and happy writing.

I was under the impression that "contemporary fantasy" is synonymous to "urban fantasy."

Also, I don't generally create these threads. If you want something added to the list, feel free to message me. :)

Re: Welcome to the Fantasy Forum

I do not think they are synonymous either. "Urban" means something that has to do with a city or similar populated area. Jim Butcher's Dresden Files are urban fantasy, as are the numerous similar series out there. On the other hand, a story that takes place way out in the country, for example about someone discovering faeries in an ancient forest in the modern world, would not be urban fantasy.

Re: Welcome to the Fantasy Forum

As an addendum, here is the first paragraph of the Wikipedia entry on Urban Fantasy:

"Urban fantasy is a sub-genre of fantasy defined by place; the fantastic narrative has an urban setting. Many urban fantasies are set in contemporary times and contain supernatural elements, making them a sub-genre of Contemporary fantasy. However, the stories can take place in historical, modern, or futuristic periods. The prerequisite is that they must be primarily set in a city."

Re: Welcome to the Fantasy Forum

And yet a story set in ye oldie Castletown is considered high fantasy, not urban. It gets very confusing when you look at all the sub-genres; not everyone will agree on definitions. For that matter, a lot of people can't agree on what fantasy means too.

And if you want a link to urban fantasy, make the thread and then ask me to link it.

I'm sure we could all argue about the definitions of the many many many sub-genres of Fantasy till we're all blue in the face. Although I must say that I think High Fantasy is very similar to Epic Fantasy (The two are often used interchangeably) except that high fantasy is slightly smaller (or less epic lol) in scope.

Re: Welcome to the Fantasy Forum

Since many threads have been relocated over the past several days, here's a few words of advice concerning what to post in the Fantasy forum.

-Topics within the fantasy genre (world building, magic, death/romance/whatever in fantasy)
-Threads to connect with authors with similar interests (the sub-genre forums, in particular)
-Help with your fantasy plot or fantasy characters

Threads that do not fall into one of those categories may be moved.
If you feel that a thread should not have been moved, send a message to Dragonchilde.
