I learned about this website last year called "Wordle." What it does is take the most-written words in your novel and put it in a cloud-like structure. The more you use a certain word, the bigger it is in the cloud. So, I tried this out here: http://www.wordle.net/show/wrdl/4392507/NaNoStory Large character names and other important nouns aren't a problem and should be large, however there are other generic words you may not want to be big. For example, in my cloud I have "asked," "like," and "just," very large and should probably be a little more careful in the future of my story as to not use these words as much. I also found that I don't use the names "Race" and "Sky" that much, despite being in my story almost as much as Elliot, Quill, and Sun, so this is a good sign that they need a little more "screen time." I suggest you try this out, it's very helpful! The Website link: http://www.wordle.net/
Oh, and I've seen a Wordle thread around NaNoWriMo somewhere, but I lost track of it and searched all the pages on the Resources and Sites forum, but I apologize if this is the wrong spot/already done.
This is really cool :D The word clusters are beautiful!
Turns out the words I use the most are my main characters' names, Kalea and Anakomi, and some really common words like "know" and "now" and "much" and "one." Hooray? XD
This is great, my software Scrivener will tell me the top words, but a visual representation is even better. Sabrina is more used than Bria and Bria is way more important to the story...maybe I'm talking about Sabrina too much? The non-names are get, just, know, back, and going for the top five, so I guess I'm doing pretty well.
Wordle - Using a certain word a little too much?

Re: Wordle - Using a certain word a little too much?
I am guilty of overusing "just". Also, "know", "like", "something", and "get".

Thankfully, my most frequent words are my characters' names!!
my other biggies are "back, child, face, found, hand, time, man, one, baby"
Re: Wordle - Using a certain word a little too much?
..."Man" is the biggest word on mine. OTL
Re: Wordle - Using a certain word a little too much?
Looked is a big one for me. Next time I'm writing a blind protagonist. There will be no looking!

Re: Wordle - Using a certain word a little too much?
"Back" was the most common non-name word in everything of length I've written.
"Around" was in close second.
Re: Wordle - Using a certain word a little too much?
Aside from my two main character's names (thank goodness), the biggest words on mine were just, know, going, and like.
This is a really cool site. :D
Re: Wordle - Using a certain word a little too much?
Just like back. This is really cool :)
Re: Wordle - Using a certain word a little too much?
"Eyes" was the second largest aside from character names.
*shame*
Re: Wordle - Using a certain word a little too much?
Apparently, I use the word "now" too much, along with characters' names, "Jedi", "even", "like", etc. Boggles the mind.
Re: Wordle - Using a certain word a little too much?
My characters names are the biggest, but the word that I've noticed that I use way to much is "seemed."
Re: Wordle - Using a certain word a little too much?
I'm kind of proud that obscenities made it in! ...Five of them. Good job, characters!
Other than that, I should probably tone down the "back," "just," and "like."
Re: Wordle - Using a certain word a little too much?
My MC is gigantic! Like, half the thing! The next biggest is her best friend, followed by her pet dog.
Then, in order of size; like, think, help, following, just, know, take.
