I just spent an hour or so on this site looking around. It's somewhat scattershot, being a wiki and all, but it's also full of definitions of character types and plot devices. Worth a look if you're in a bind! http://tvtropes.org
@Aster-- Yes, it can become a closed circle that transmutes into a sealed room in the middle of nowhere then quickly morphs into a tailor-made prison... pretty soon you're hoping for a fate worse than death to distract you from the high octane nightmare fuel.
In all seriousness, though, you do have to love it -- true, it has its, um, flaws, true, it's a massive time-consumer, but at the same time, it's entertaining, it's funny, it's insightful (I've definitely learned some new things about some of my favorite shows that I didn't know before. :), and it's definitely a good way to get yourself out of a bind. That, and it really helps you learn new writing techniques, it really does.

NO.
YOU DO NOT SUGGEST TVTROPES ON NANOWRIMO.
The thing is a timesucker.
You will lose valuable time you could be spending on writing.
You will lose valuable life you could be spending on writing.
Do not dare visit that site, you will be lured...

I give anyone fair warning, that way time loss lies. That said, it's a good tool, Unspoken Plan Guarantee just totally saved my butt.
Remember, with great power comes great responsibility. Trope with care.
Re: Stuck? TV Tropes describes fictional devices and conventions
Yes, TvTropes is already infamous here on Nano.
Might I also suggest to you another deadly time trap :)
The equally infamous Limyaael's Rants. Enter with care.

Man I love TV Tropes. It's like my own personal drug habit. :D
Re: Stuck? TV Tropes describes fictional devices and conventions
TVTropes lured me in and never let me out. That said, it's a very entertaining and informative site. I love to mix and match the tropes. :D
