Re: WriteorDie or Written? Kitten!

Okay, having now tried out Written? Kitten! I must say that the motivation to get a new kitty picture is surprisingly effective...except when i already have a perfectly adorable kitten picture as my last reward. Then I don't want to keep writing because it'll make the kitty go away! O:

Seriously though? I actually really like it, and the positive reinforcement is nice. But the lack of pressure to *keep* writing (as the pictures don't disappear if you just sit around) removes the most important factor of write or die influencing my productivity - that it forces me to concentrate.

So for me? Write or Die for my daily word sprints; Kitties now for when I'm on a more leisurely pace :D

Re: WriteorDie or Written? Kitten!

I actually found Written? Kitten! to be highly effective for a word sprint--I wrote 500 words in under nine minutes because I set the word counter for the new image to 500, so I didn't actually GET a kitten photo until I was finished with the word sprint.

I do agree, it's not good to keep me productive, but the fact that I can set it to give me that first kitten photo at 500 or 1,000 words is definitely a motivator.

Oh, I'm so torn! I just took a sneak peek at this writtenkitten because this is the first time I've heard of it and I thought, "Pfft, cute kitten pictures wont encourage me to write faster." BUT then I saw the cute kitten and my heart melted slightly and now I find myself torn. I'm very much behind on word count and have been relying heavily on writeordie since the start of Nano. For some reason writeordie terrifies me. I don't even go all kamikaze on it, just the annoying sounds, but the wailing baby cries, car horns and sounds of Hanson's repetitive "Mmmm Bop" are playing on my last nerves.

I think I'm going to give this writtenkitten a test drive tomorrow, so I still can't say which one is better. I think like someone else said, I might rely on written kitten when I'm doing a more leisurely writing pace and writeordie for the more, insane, panicked fits I go into-which is a lot lately-.

Written? Kitten! works better for me. It may not make me faster, but I enjoy the process. I can crank out 500 words in Write or Die pretty quickly but it isn't fun for me--it's just stressful. I keep W?K! set to 100. 100 is so manageable. And ooh, kitty picture! Then another easy 100. Then kitty. And so on, so forth. I enjoy the writing, even if it takes longer.

And since I'm playing catch-up, it's helping me to think of my word count deficit as 85 kitten pics I *get* to see as I write, not 8.5k I *have* to write. I sure won't be counting those kitten pics, but I'd be counting every difficult word of that 8.5k.

Re: WriteorDie or Written? Kitten!

I never even tried Write or Die because I already know that any stress at all is deleterious to my writing process. Even when I get all excited in a positive way because my writing is going really well, the stress of my increased heartbeat, etc., usually derails my writing soon after hitting that high. It took me years to work up the nerve to do NaNo, in fact, because I was so afraid of all the stress entailed.

Written? Kitten! is great—I immediately took to it. I don't need a reward, especially, but the layout of the page is relaxing in itself, and the kitten photos are surprisingly calming. But like anything else where your brain habituates to an image, the calming effect wears off after a while. The timing of having a new one pop up every 100 words is just about perfect for refreshing the feeling of calm. And calm, for me, is what it's all about, in getting writing done.=smile=

I think maybe all I need is a word counter in the corner and a bit of motivation and I think kittens win out for me over threats, so kittens on Written Kitten it is should I need a writeordie/writtenkitten kind of motivation.
:p
My cellphone is on hand should I need an added boost of motivation (set time on timer) or want to know how long I've been writing (stopwatch).

I've just tried out 'Written? Kitten!'.

I've used WriteorDie for a couple of years now, both online and with the desktop edition. Personally, the threat from WriteorDie works better for me. That said, my desk has a few pictures of my cute dogs on it, so I don't feel the need to write in order to see adorableness.

Also, with the desktop edition, I have it set up so I'm Rick Rolled every time I stop writing for more than a few seconds. xD

Write or Die uses the Skinner principle of the carrot and the stick, while the Written? Kitten! approach uses the principle of positive reinforcement and praise. In my humble opinion, at least.

I have to say, I just found out about Write or Die two days ago, and I just found out about Written Kitten 20 minutes ago, but I'm going to have to go with Write or Die.

I actually find the pictures of kittens to be distracting, and my problem with writing is not that I'm not motivated, but that I take long pauses between paragraphs to think about what I'm going to write next. Write or Die doesn't let me do that, but Written Kitten does.

Having said that, the kittens on Written Kitten are sooo cute! Squee!

The kittens on Written? Kitten! are adorable but it doesn't really motivate me to write more, personally. I find it's better for me to write with a time limit and a goal, but it's probably because I'm used to doing a lot of sprints like that last year!

I think someone should put the two together. If you stop writing, the kitten disappears and then it gradually goes red screen of death, but there's still the reward. So it's a carrot+stick situation.

I haven't tried written kitten yet but I think I will. I like write or die though because it forces me to sit there for 20 minutes so I can get 1000 words. Though I will admit I haven't done kamikaze mode since I lost 200 words to it last year (I paused and when I unpaused it ate all my words) but normal and the annoying sounds work well. However I do often time either have my volume off or I'm listening to music so I don't hear the horrible noises. I'm worried having a cute picture will distract me too much.

I... had actually never used either of these! WriteorDie appealed to me when I tried it a few minutes ago, but since I'm a generally skittish person and also just read a little bit of scary stuff online (n-not that I was procrastinating or anything) I was sort of terrified that something was going to freak me out and I quit before anything happened. xD Maybe I should try gentle mode? Any recommendations from fellow weenies who use this? o:
Anyway, for now it looks like it'll be kittens for me!

Write or Die kamikaze mode has always been useful to me, since I'm a terrible procrastinator. D:
I'll try Written? Kitten! now, to see if it gives me some motivation. A nerdy version would also be good.
[OK, I've tried it and just seen my first kitten. I love it! :)]

But mainly I just use the word processor I made, so I hear an alert when the time is up. Writing with my eyes closed is the only way it seems to get 250+ words out of five minutes. I don't know why... but it works.

Right now my favourite seems to be Written? Kitten! at the moment, but it all depends on my productivity.

The problem with write or die is that I actually stop to find out what the music is and then I start over again to find out what the next music is. Right now, for instance, I am listening to some terribly scratchy violin. My neighbors are outside, wondering, I'm sure, why in hell I have this loop of terrible music playing, but I have a strange affinity for the terrible.

Kittens, it is. I just want to get to a cuter kitten. Much more effective.

I've tried both, and while neither are particularly effective in boosting my writing speed, I'd guess that WoD is a little better for me. I think kittens are cute, but I'm not sure that they drive me to write enough to see the next one.

On the other hand, if all else fails, I can write after my kids are in bed (on the other side of the wall from my computer) with the fear of waking them up with the god-awful sounds from WoD.

Hmmm, this actually looks like it's helping. Maybe because on WriteOrDie it gives you the red squiggly lines under a misspelled word (in my browser, anyways, Google Chrome) and therefore I have to backspace (kind of a psychological thing). But Written?Kitten! doesn't have that. Not only that, but the kittens are cute as all get out, too :D I'll probably use both.

I dislike Written? Kitten!...it's not motivating at all. I couldn't really care less about the next kitten picture. Write or Die is much more effective to me, since it's the reminder to keep writing - the pink darkening to red screen - that motivates me mostly. I rarely get to the point where I'm listening to the bad noises or having my words eaten - I just need that pink screen to remind me to keep my fingers moving. Otherwise, it's so much easier to just stop and ponder over what I'm going to write next instead of actually writing what comes next.

I do like the combination that somebody suggested up there..although I'd be happier with a piece of candy every 500 words than a picture of a kitten every 100.

WriteorDie is annoying (which I guess is the whole point), but rather than motivate me to write, it just motivates me to close out the tab so that the sound goes away. WrittenKitten on the other hand just gave me three adorable pictures for three hundred words. So, kittens it is!

I found Written? Kitten! when it popped up on my twitter feed and thought 'yeah, kittens, don't think so' and forgot about it until I was bored a few days ago and checked it out. It totally works! I kept writing just to see what random cute/funny pictures would show up next :) And after almost a week of not writing I got through nearly 2500 words in no time at all.

Brilliant idea.

When I don't have any motivation, or thoughts, or ANYTHING AT ALL - written kitten is the WAY TO GO. I just was linked to it, and it's already helped me write 500 words in under ten minutes. THAT IS FIVE KITTENS, GUYS!!!! Think of your plot in kittens. 50,000 words? OH YOU MEAN 500 KITTENS!!!!

The neat thing about W?K! to me is that you can change it to serve up whatever pictures you want. puppies or sheep or squids or Snape or whatever. I haven't played around with this feature too much but the fact that you CAN do it means extra customization.

I've used both and I love Write or Die - got 1700 words in half an hour there today. But topping off a day with "extra" words is much nicer on W?K! :)

Whenever the red screen and the sounds of doom came up during Die I'd always curse so loudly my cat Moo would come into the room to see if she had to call 911 for me. When I used Kitten Moo was sitting on the back of my office chair, and when the kitten popped up she sat up and stared at the screen, so I guess she likes that better. I do too.

Write or Die works so much better for me. The time limit is what gets me writing, as well as the threat of my words being deleted. For something like Written Kitten I just end up ambling along, getting distracted, writing a hundred words or so and the giving up. Write or Die forces me to churn out a couple of thousand words in just over half an hour. :D

Oh, I forgot to mention, you can change the word count partway through, too. So you can get to 1700 words by doing a 1,000 (or two 500s), three 200s, and a 100. Or three 500s and one 200. Or one 1,000, one 500, and one 200. There are a lot of different combinations you can do depending on how often you want to be rewarded.

Plus I like the fact that with Firefox, it will save my work if I accidentally close it out. I can imagine that if you have the time to be able to do so, you could probably use it several times throughout the day so that the prize of the kitten photo is always fresh and new.

Writeordie's kamikaze mode terrifies me so I don't set it on that, heh, but:

When I'm in a real rut and write or die doesn't even motivate me I tend to just hit spacebar or something when it goes red on it, and sometimes depending on the sound I don't even really mind just letting it go banana phone or the music (not the violins) bit, maybe I just tune out or hit mute (or a key). Think from now on I'll be switching to written kitten though :p I tried it out and think it better serves my needs -- the goal oriented motivation rather than threat and the ability to change wordcount goal in the middle of writing plus no count down timer (I use my phone's timer and/or stopwatch instead when I want a timed run; with writeordie I have to reload/reset it after the timer runs out if I still want to see the minutes/seconds tick by).

Agree 100% with this ^ I can look up kitten pictures in my own time, the Internet is 90% cats anyway. The negative reinforcement works well for me, and it has a timer and word counter, what more do I need?

Seeing the screen turn pink is enough to remind me to keep writing. Kamikaze mode is brilliant because I know it's there lurking, and I never get to the point where words start disappearing. Gentle mode is useless to me.

I think they should definitely introduce electric shock mode.

Re: WriteorDie or Written? Kitten!

Here is the info I read about it:
writtenkitten.net

It is based on the idea of write or die, but it rewards you for writing instead of punishing you for not writing. The original uses adorable kittens, but you can also modify it to show squid (writtenkitten.net/?search=squid) and just about anything else. Just replace the word squid with whatever you want pictures of.

I am trying it now with shoes, but my computer is acting sort of funny and I can't quite tell if it is working. I hope it does, though.
