I've uploaded another novel I wrote since NaNoWriMo and have had a reasonable response. I was wondering if anyone else has used/is planning to use the website and how they got on.

Just went to check it out - a bit disappointed you have to be 18, but I suppose that's only one more year for me. It looks good though - bookmarked for next year.

I have joined authonomy and I find that it is a great sight for finding fresh authors and work, as well as an awesome place to support books that you want to see on the bookshelves. I love that site!

Oh, I didn't realise there was an age restriction!

Did you upload your NaNo novel? I've read a lot of amazing, and a lot of terrible work on there! Most work has typos etc (mine included) as people appear to upload unfinished versions.

I have loaded my first book on there - THe Wishing Tree. FOr a while it whizzed up the charts but I have no idea where it is now. I've not lost interest but I've not got as much time at the moment. Cool if it goes up but if it doesn't - well I'd just better stay ahead of my boyfriend that's all I can say.

The best thing about Authonomy is you can meet some lovely people there.

Take care

I'll have to check your novel out. Some people seem nice, but people seem a lot more cagey/solely focused on promoting their work rather than meeting people! I've met a lot more people and made more friends on here.

Re: Has anyone else joined Authonomy?

I couldn't agree more - that's one of the main things I don't like about it. I refuse to play the game - if my book is good enough it will make it to the top. If not ... well, it's not the end of the world. If I like a book I will help in any way I can - I'm editing Secrets of the Forest, a wonderful book by Neville Kent because I have absolute faith in it but most I read and only give 6 stars if it gets and keeps my interest. I've made 2 friends in the entire time I've been on authonomy but I can't count how many I've made from Nano! :-) This is a much more friendly group.

If you let me know what your book is called I'll take a look at it as well. I can't believe I'm going to say this, but Paul's (my boyfriend) is called Scrap the Car ... His is the only book I REALLY can't take off my shelf. I'm amazed at how many books are badly presented on there! I know mine has typos but some are not even paragraphed properly.

Take care

Me too! I don't want to have to 'befriend' obnoxious and often boring people, or spam everyone, just to get people to look at my work! I've uploaded two books - The Ski Season and A Case of Drapetomania. I'll take a look at yours and your boyfriends.

I think mine probably isn't paragraphed properly because it took me so long to upload each paragraph! I think most people probably just upload without checking the format.

Cool! I'll take a look at both of yours too (Just give me time to write my essays for class - the end ofthe week I hope - because I don't want to fail - then I'll settle down to reading your stuff).

Paul is taking Scrap down - once he has I can tell you more ... I'd be intrigued to know what you think of his book ...

My regular email address is mwinrow1(at)sky(dot)com if you want to write to me via that. Did I already tell you that? sorry - I've had 3 years with a maximumm average of 2 hours sleep a night and I'm so muzzy headed - that may account for some strange sentences in THe Wishing Tree! :-)

Don't worry about the paragraphing etc now you've told me but I'm actually referring to those who either don't paragraph AT ALL or even change their mind how it should look seemingly every few paragraphs. How long have you been a member (sorry to hijack this thread!)?

Re: Has anyone else joined Authonomy?

Basically he thinks it doesn't work and thinks it's a scam. Well that's up to him. Yes ... I shouldn't have said anything about it being made into a film because I've had some really bitchy comments but now I think people are jealous. I'll tell you a lot more soon - I'll send you a proper email too - I hate this box because it's hard to edit (I have a broken hand so I make a lot of typing mistakes .... sad when you think I used to type at 94 wpm with 99% accuracy!)

Had a strange day today - I face a HORRIBLE operation tomorrow - I have to stay awake for it. I will look at your book once the swelling in my hand goes down after the op - I have a bandage on because it swells up to 3 times its size and looks horrible, wierd shaped but I can take the bandage off when it goes loose because it's fine then. The op is to try to fix my wrist so I can work with it. I'll be scared to death but I've had it done so many times before so I shouldn't worry. The worst thing about it is the pain for the wrist part. The after effects are horrendous though. THe doctor is also going to give me an accupuncture set and see if that works...

I've been a member of Authonomy since about last summer - at one point my book rocketed up the charts. Then for various reasons I couldn't go on for a while and I slipped down. Well, as the lovely Neville Kent said, maybe it's not the time for my book to reach the top but that time will come.

Did I tell you a group of us are doing our own wri-ye? You're welcome to join us. I said I'd wait until Saturday to see who is joining us and then set it up. Everyone will work from the same score card and I would advise using a separate file for the work related to this one. All writing - fiction, poetry even, letters, journal/blogs - as long as they are bigish documents can count. For example, I have a document where I started writing 3 books at the same time - they all count towards the total. I'm not counting the first lot because it's clearly been written before this was suggested, but anything I write after we start will be counted. It's like a wri-ye - you set your own goal - it has to be a challenge but not impossible (unless you're me - I have to write 2 MILLION (you read that right) words this year ... wish me luck - that's a hell of a lot of books.

You can check out my website if you want at www.writing4oneandall.weebly.com. Say hello if you decide to do that on the contact page. The page WAS set up to publicise Paul but hasn't been updated on his part for months ... long story! I keep mine as up to date as I can but it's hard.

Look forward to reading your books on authonomy.

Love

Ah ok. I don't think it's a scam, but I think it's probably not very beneficial for a lot of people. People are very jealous of others' success on that site... Ahh, good luck! I had acupuncture before when I shattered my heel and it really helped.
Yeah, thanks, that sounds good :) 2 million is very ambitious, but i'm sure it's achievable if you set your mind to it!

Hello All... I too am on Authonomy, joined in August (I think)... and have met a lot of nice people there. I've even gotten some great feedback on the book I've uploaded -- my first novel, Terra Incognita. I really like it there and have just decided to not worry about forcing the book on people... I'll just see how far it gets on it's own and read whatever interests me.

Re: Has anyone else joined Authonomy?

Basically is a social networking website where the quality of the book doesn't matter. I've read some of the top ten books and they have grammar mistakes that people aren't willing to point out because they want a critique back and their book, which is also flawed to be shelved. If you want to spend time social networking rather than writing--this would be a good fit. If you approach the website to find other people who really want to improve your book rather than a place to publish it--you probably could find a nice niche where you could find people who really share your interest--but you'll never make it into the top ten.

It's probably easier to go through the painful submission process than try through the website. Besides, POD is at the end of the Authonomy rainbow, not a guaranteed book deal. (Look up the first 10 hits on the website name)

If you're looking for critiques, critique circle is probably the most efficient website. You get line by line critiques and though there is social networking, some of the features help to keep it to a minimum--especially since there is no game trying to be at the top of the pile nor an empty book deal promise.

I joined a few months back and uploaded a portion of my book. I think it's an alright site for critiques and making friends but stay away from the forums in my opinion. It's a huge drama box of pettiness and popularity contests from what I've seen. And the cliques are horrible. Most of the people I've seen on there are either full of themselves or extremely rude.

Then again maybe I just had a bad experience with it?
