Wikiwrimo challenge to Nanoers!

So some of you may have seen the Wikiwrimo page linked on the Procrastination Station. Right now, the site is around 850 pages. It is also full of a need for pages! A lot of pages are just plain missing, like some of the forums and regions. Surely there must be someone out there that can say things about Role Playing and Communal Story Building, Lazette Gifford, or Rome, GA.

So I'm issuing a challenge. Wrimos, let us show our love of facts and talking about things we like and try to get Wikiwrimo to break the 1000-page mark before the end of the year. I think if we put our minds together, we can fill in a lot of the gaps. Maybe someone doesn't know Flint, MI but knows about Last Post. Maybe someone else has never been to Writing 101, but can help with the Germany page.

I am also issuing a secondary challenge to get the list of Stubs down below 100. Right now, that means we would need 26 pages to be filled in with enough information to be a full page. A lot of these are region pages that just need some fleshing out. And surely there's someone out there that can talk about the importance of fingerless gloves, handwriting, or can dig up some fun facts about Chris Baty.

Let's get editing, guys! :D

You know I heart you for this, right?

But yes! One of the BIG things that no one can do by themselves is the freaking humongous regional directory. If everyone writes something about their region, that'll help so much. For reals.

And by the way, people reading this: You know more about NaNo than you think. Really.

I see you guys are stunned into silence by the magnitude of this project. Don't be! If we get 50 people to contribute 3 pages, we'd be there. You can do three pages, right? I'm betting your home region doesn't have a page, for one - you can write something about your home, right?

C'mon, let's see some hustle!

Re: Wikiwrimo challenge to Nanoers!

Hi Keladryie, there's a section on writing about regions in the Wikiwrimo Guide to Editing, which includes a link to the Atlanta region page (the most complete one at this point). I considered making the region guide a separate page, and it probably will be eventually, but I could never figure out a good name for it. However, there is no template for regional pages at the moment, probably because there are regions of all sizes, including brand new regions with not much history. This may change if a good template falls into place, but for now I'm rolling with whatever users contribute.

And don't worry about finding the blank page intimidating--I still find it intimidating sometimes, and I created the site!

I ... am far too clueless about the details of NaNoWriMo to be much help in building the wiki, however much I want to do it. ;) (That's kind of sad considering my first NaNoWriMo was in 2004, but I was never really a forum junkie...)

Still, I shall bookmark this and ponder. ;D

Re: Wikiwrimo challenge to Nanoers!

Tia's exactly right. The regional directory is a great place to start contributing since no one can write about all the regions. I created the site, so it's safe to assume I know quite a bit about NaNo. :-) Still, it's also pretty safe to assume that you know more about your region than I (or most other Wrimos) do!

There's also a Scratchpad linked from the front page with ideas for articles, lists and other long articles that aren't hard to contribute to, along with other ways to contribute. One big thing: Most of Wikiwrimo was written during the 2010 NaNo season. Guess what? There are probably still a lot of articles wrongly using the present tense. That's really easy to fix, but it's a pain in the butt for one person to fix.

Well, does your region have an ML? Did it have an ML last year? The year before? That's info that can go on the page! If you don't know about the region's history, you can ask your ML or someone in your region who has been there forever. There's usually someone who has done NaNo for ages and can tell you everything, like popular places for write-ins, traditions, that sort of thing.

So, I understand from reading above is that you want us to go to our region's page and write about our region (places people write and places that would be cool to get together and write at). I feel I'm missing something here though.

Re: Wikiwrimo challenge to Nanoers!

Coffeetailor: Congratulations, you've just found the bug that is driving me absolutely nuts in the site. tl;dr safe_mode sucks and I can't wait until PHP6 comes out.

Basically, there's a parameter that won't send mail from the site, and basically you need to delete the fifth parameter in the call to mail() in the source, but holy balls there are so many files in the source and searching for what I need to find is helping me, well, not at all. [If anyone knows what file you have to tweak for this, please let me know. I have no clue what this is.]

There's also a huge MediaWIki user forum where I could go ask for help, but when I try to register, my registration is denied for spam reasons. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. Contacting them has done little (probably because my legitimate email has gotten blocked as spam), so now I'm tinkering with things and hoping I don't break anything. So yes, that's what has been going on. Trust me, I'm very well aware, and yes, your email address is just fine. It's broken on my end, sadly.

And iliamarie2001, that's exactly what I'd like to see. Just sign up for Wikiwrimo, navigate to the Region page, and click through to your region. If your region is a new one, you may have to create a link to that page before creating the page; I haven't made links to all the new regions yet. But yes, history of the region, who the MLs are, regional traditions, that sort of thing. You got it! And of course, anything else you'd like to add to the rest of the wiki. :)

Sushi: Do they have a user support forum? See if someone has implemented the fix and has the files available for download.

Here's an example of something people may know about: Who here has done the Year of Doing Big, Fun, Scary Things? I know they gave out a certificate the first year (2007), but did they do that in subsequent years? Does anyone have any of these certificates that can upload them? (I used to have the 2007 one, but my hard drive is currently telling me "lol no don't know what you're talking about!") Who's moderated the forum aside from Dragonchilde? (For some reason I think essbee was a moderator this year?)
