I'm writing something that involves concert pianists around the time of Betthoven up into the late eighteen hundreds and I was wondering if and when women were discouraged from performing or playing the piano. Thanks.
In her day, Clara Schumann was considered the best pianist in the business, male or female.
On the other hand, at around the same time period, Fanny Mendelssohn had to have all of her compositions credited to her brother Felix. (Some music scholars estimate that as much as half his published output was actually his sister's!)

Re: Women in music
This is the first entry that pops up when you Google "female concert pianists."

You can easily examine some of these women more closely to get a sense of their experiences.
