So I'm coming up to the very end of my novel, and I'm torn. I have two possible ways to end it, and I can't figure out which one to do.
1: I can have the demon get banished and the curse on the property lifted. Good guys win and despite some casualties, life goes on.
2: I can have the good guys think they win, but the demon actually hopped a ride out in someone's body.
Both work for the story, and while the happy ending my be cliche, the bad guy ultimately wins version has been quite the trend of late and therefore is also becoming cliche. Gah! Help!
I suppose it depends. Do you want to really freak your readers out? If so, have the demon possess a main character, but don't reveal that until the last couple lines or so. That way, the reader thinks everything's good and over with until you reveal the twist at the end. Have you ever read those books where the ending makes you go, "No way!" and then pull your hair out because you never saw that ending coming? That's how it could happen.
If you want to make it more tragic, have them win with the loss of some people. If you want your reader to go away thinking that the ending was sad, but it was wonderful that the good guys still won, then write the first ending.
How to end it?

Hope that helps.

Demon hitched a ride....leaves room for a series :)
