I love horror movies in general, both Gore and Psychological. Plus, you can't pass up a classic!

I did get a chance to spend a couple nights on the real Elm Street though. I went to college there! It was pretty cool.

Re: What's Your Favourite Horror Movie?

Having to choose is difficult indeed. I can do a list but that's about it.

The Thing- The original. While the prequel wasn't all that bad it can't compare to this movie.

In the Mouth of Madness- Kind of low budget so the effects aren't great. But as a whole I enjoy it.

Poltergeist- Classic

Children of the Corn- Also classic

Hellraiser 1-3- Great gore-horror with excellent one-liners. The first one is probably the creepiest; they became very different movies beyond that point.

Strangeland- One of the scariest 'it could happen in the real world' horror movies out there. One of the few movies that has made me want to look away from the screen now and again.

Audition- The whole film may be a build-up to the last few minutes, but its so worth it.

Re-animator- An excellent zombie movie that's based off of Lovecraft? Can't really go wrong there.

Onibaba- Definitely another classic. I originally watched this film in Japanese without subtitles but the plot is so simple you can still follow along well enough and the movie's good enough that it still kept my interest with only a minimal understanding of the language.

Psycho- I don't think this one requires an explanation. :p

I could keep going but those are the ones that come to mind right now.

Re: What's Your Favourite Horror Movie?

Horror:

1) John Carpenter's The Thing (nothing beats its tension)
2) Hellraiser I & II (the rest of the series is way less unnerving, check out the comics though)
3) Alien & Alien3 (the second is action, these two are unnerving and disturbing)
4) Stanley Kubrick's The Shining (just creepy)
5) Event Horizon (Hellraiser in space)

More thriller... (and apparently involving serial killers):

1) Silence of the Lambs (classic)
2) Se7en (bleak & depressing)
3) The Cell (disturbing peak into the mind of a serial killer)

-The Excorcist
-Children of the Corn
-Reincarnation

Re: What's Your Favourite Horror Movie?

Man do I ever feel outta the loop here; I'm not a big fan of the 'classic' horror movies. But I think that's because logic and science prevent me from enjoying stuff that looks cheesy. I also kind of have a thing against Nicholson and Kubrick.

If Marble Hornets doesn't count, then I'll be sad. Poor Tim. ;_;

I'm also a huge fan of shockspoitation films (I love to be disturbed), and of psychological, 'is-it-really-happening-at-all' movies. Sooo... a brief list~

Jacob's Ladder (One of the first movies to ever make me seriously uncomfortable without heavy gore)
Human Centipede; First Sequence (... ... Explaining this will just make me sound really creepy. It's the science, I swear.)
The Shrine (The acting is a little weak, especially in the main female, but I find it interesting anyways).
Battle Royale (Seriously. Kids fighting each other to the death? What else needs to be said?)
Haute Tension (... I kind of have a thing for foreign movies. Plus the twist is played out so well.)
Audition (Stalkers are scary. End of story.)
Jenifer (Technically part of a TV show, Masters of Horror, but still creepy and amazing.)
The Fair-Haired Boy (See above.)
Suicide Club (One of the first foreign films I ever watched.)
The Blair Witch Project (This movie gets such a bad rap, but I genuinely love it. The fact that they're being stalked and toyed with by something we never actually see is way scarier than movies where you never have a frame away from the killer...)
Insidious (This is probably one of the only new Hollywood movies I can stand. The plot has a couple of holes in it, and I wish they'd spent more time developing a number of characters, but it's pretty enjoyable, and damn interesting.)

Re: What's Your Favourite Horror Movie?

I watch quite a few horror movies, but I can't seem to say I could say which ones are my favorites. I can say Silent Hill is definitely up there somewhere. Just the creepy atmosphere it gives off. Or maybe it's just me.

I can also say I do really like The Blair Witch project. The only thing that really kills me for that movie is that they were trying to say it was real when it was pretty obvious it wasn't. Though it's been a while since I've seen it so I'm not sure if it was the movie makers themselves who actually claimed it or if it was everyone else saying it was real.

Poltergeist is another good one. I've only ever really seen the first one, though. I think I tried watching either the second or third and just did not enjoy it.

Those would be my ultimate favourite horrors. I like most horror movies.
Except for Drag Me To Hell. That so should have been put in the Comedy section. I was disappoint! <.<

Finally, someone else who appreciates the Silent Hill movie!

The Blair Witch Project was meant to seem as real as possible. The makers tried to fool the audience by giving real fear (the actors were literally dumped in the woods by themselves) and by making a fake interview section (friends of victims, scene investigators, news stories, etc.). The effort they put into making the movie seem real is ridiculous, but I don't really see the point of it.

There's so many! Let's see....

-The Exorcist -- it's such a good, classic horror movie. It scared the hell out of me as a kid and still gives me a thrill now.
-Paranormal Activity Trilogy - I just saw the latest one, and I'm loving the fantastic creepiness of the really subtle scares. It makes it feel more "real" than the over-the-top gore and special effects that some movies use.
-Saw movies - And now I'm going to contradict myself by mentioning the torture/gore fest that is the Saw series.
-Final Destination series - Do these count as horror? Gore? Something in between?
-Scream movies
-Silence of the Lambs

There are so many good movies listed in this forum. Now I want to go find them and watch them all.

Constantine - It's amazing, I love the way everything comes together, the devil was portrayed so much better in this movie, it had a bit of excorcism in it. The story just carries on getting better, and Keanu Reeves isn't the everyday hero, which is a change.

I find that nowadays very little constitutes "true" horror (at least according to my definition). What is in the cinema/tv is usually only about the gory/torturepart of horror, which I find totally uninteresting and not scary at all - it's just gross for the sake of being gross. I like more the eerie stuff like, for instance:

1408
the mist
the descent
cat people

(just to name a few titles)

but I also enjoy the type of horror that also uses humour, like:

evil dead
drag me to hell
child's play
nightmare on elm st.

Seven years later, I still have trouble getting to sleep if I've even been thinking about it. But I love it, because it's affected me so deeply.

I have watched horror films ad nauseum, looking for something that will scare me, but one after the other, they all disappoint. I still enjoy watching them - horror is one of my favorite genres, regardless - but they just don't scare me. Saw, however, scares me on a very primal level. The idea of being hurt or killed by an external source isn't scary to me. But the idea of having the choice between staying chained to a wall and dying, or sawing my own leg off and maybe living, is horrifying.

The Saw franchise was called a "torture/gore fest" a few posts up, and I have to say a few words in defense of the original film. While the sequels were, indeed, injected with sometimes gratuitous gore in order to bring in the bucks, the original film was not. It wasn't even meant to be a horror film, but a psychological thriller. Like most first films in what becomes a franchise, it was honest and real. Then Hollywood came in and screwed the sequels up. The original filmmakers - writer Leigh Whannell and director James Wan - were very minimally involved in the second and third films, and not at all in the rest, which is a big reason, I believe, that they got so Hollywoodized and so far removed from the raw, honest quality of the first. The original is a masterpiece, in my opinion.

Somewhat redundant with many already listed, here's what I like.

Of the classics:
Nosferata – gotta love the first vampire flick (and wonder where it all went wrong)
Wolf Man – the original with Lon Chaney Jr.
Psycho
The Wicker Man
The Exorcist
John Carpenter's Halloween
American Werewolf in London

Of the 90s and later:
Silence of the Lambs
Sleepy Hollow
What Lies Beneath
The Craft
Shadow of the Vampire
The Ring
28 Days Later
The Haunting in Connecticut

I'm not a huge fan of horror films (which, obviously, makes it a good idea for me to write horror), but I absolutely am in love with Event Horizon. Not as well known as it deserves IMO. Larry Fishburne is fantastic in it (as are Jason Isaacs and Sam Niell), and it's just the sort of terrifying I'm aiming for. :)

I don't watch the "real classics" I guess, but I love the 90s horror films. The new stuff seems so over the top and full of special effects and it ruins it for me. I've never been scared by them though, except for when I was five and had to rewatch Chucky over and over again. But I was five.

-The Ring (I watched that when I was a little kid and thought the girl climbing out of the well was so cool.)
-Scream (I thought that was a perfect blend of comedy, horror, and getting a message across.)
-Nightmare on Elm Street series (Freddy is my hero.)
-Halloween (an old favorite)
-Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Who doesn't love chainsaws?)
-Dawn of the Dead (I watch this on repeat for hours)
-Black Sheep (I love it when the sheep eat their guts)
-Chucky (The original one...the only movie that made me piss my pants.)
-Shrooms (Very confusing, but I figured it out before the end.)
-Silence of the Lambs (Lector was cool but Buffalo Bill's part made me almost piss my pants. I still refuse to watch it all the way because of his nipple ring.)
-Exorcism of Emily Rose (That made me fascinated with the Catholic Church.)

At the moment, it's probably Carriers. I suppose something about the theme of brotherhood and the death of humanity caught me at the right moment. Also, it reminded me of the first bit of The Stand miniseries, which I loved when I was a kid, so that helped. I also quite like May.

I should also note that Paranormal Activity is one of the few horror movies I've seen that actually scared me enough to give me nightmares, so that's got to be on the list.

It's actually a really bad horror movie that inspired the NaNo novel I'm writing this year... One of the actors in it was too good for the movie, and made the character more interesting than the script did, which got me to thinking about what I would've done with the character instead... It went from there!

I like a lot of really horror movies, and find James Whale's "Frankenstein" and "Bride of Frankenstein" to be utterly brilliant. I also have a lot of love for "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari," the Frederick March and Spencer Tracy versions of "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," "Dracula's Daughter," Roger Corman's "Masque of the Red Death," "I Walked with a Zombie," and the original version of "The Wicker Man." For more modern horror, I deeply love "Company of Wolves," and found a lot of the dream imagery of "The Cell" to be incredibly popular. Also, the Svankmajer movie "Little Otik" has probably the most disturbing monster I've ever seen in a movie.

Re: What's Your Favourite Horror Movie?

I'm not really one for over the top gory movies, so my list of 'horror' movies tends to be kind of tiny. Still, since AMC has been playing some good ones lately, I can't help but think of some.

Into the Mouth of Madness--Yeah, not your state of the art effects, but anyone who is a fan of the Cthulu or Old Gods myths definitely should see this movie. 'Did I ever tell you my favorite color is blue? >:3'

1408--The only movie to ever make me call an inanimate object, let alone A ROOM, a naughty word. >_>

Silent Hill--Loved it. Loved it almost as much as the games. And I don't care who knows it.

REC--The original Spanish version, (not the American remake known as Quarantine). I think this one freaked me out the most because you weren't sure what was going on. It could have been a zombie outbreak, or it could have been something supernatural. Plus, people screaming in a language I can't understand kind of makes me nervous until I read the subtitles. XD;

The Thing (original)--Nothing like Kurt Russel fighting monsters with a ridiculous amount of fire based weaponry, lol.

28 Weeks Later--Now I know, most people consider this kind of a crappy sequel zombie flick. Still, I give it props for even attempting to rationalize the zombie infection as an ACTUAL viral epidemic with the potential of having 'carriers'. Plus, the editing was quite nice, particularly in the beginning with the background music. I appreciated it so much that FOR ONCE in a horror movie the camera wasn't pressing against an actor's face and the camera wasn't constantly shaking. (I'M LOOKING AT YOU, CLOVERFIELD. Thanks for giving me motion sickness so I couldn't watch the end of you. >___>)

Mad Respect to all you said. REC and REC 2 are explosively awesome. And 28 Weeks Later is amazing. Check out BOOM studios 28 Days Later comic series that seeks to fill the time gap between the films. Truly epic.
In the Mouth: true classic. Lovecraft's best homage. ( Oddly enough Michael De Luca who wrote In the Mouth, was the dude that wrote Freddy's Dead as well as the bulk of the Freddy's Nightmares tv series...)

I just played through & finished Amnesia today ... There were a lot of times where I found myself thinking, "This is too much. I need to stop."

The only reason I made it through was that it's Halloween weekend!

Films:
REC
The Descent - Specifically the first half of the film, but when you stop to think about the ending it gets even better. So claustrophobic.
The Last Exorcism - Mainly because of the lead actress.
Army of Darkness - B Horror at it's finest.

For games:
Amnesia
Bioshock - more creepy than scary, but the sheer atmosphere when I first started playing it made me stop for a month or two. I couldn't deal with the spider splicers.

Poltergiest
Silent Hill
It
Pet Cemetary
The Ring
Paranormal Activity 2 - I hated the first one. It was such a let down.
The Haunting in Connecticut
House on Haunted Hill - both the original and the remake
Let the Right One In

I know this one is extremely cheesy, but Joy Ride scared the crap out of me when it came out. I don't know why this one got me so bad. To this day I won't walk into a truck stop by myself LOL

-Child's Play 2
-Evil Dead 2
-Return of the Living Dead

I'm also a fan of older horror films, like the cheesy ones from the 50s and 60s, especially an early horror comedy called "The Undertaker and His Pals".

Scream 1 & 2 are the best ones, 3 wasn't to bad & i thought 4 was ok.

Saw, the first 2 films, The first Saw film was one of the only films at the end i was thinking, no way as Jigsaw gets up off the floor, if you haven't seen it sorry if i ruined it.

The Fog (1980) not so much a horror film but has some good supernatural element to it, staying with John Carpenter films, Halloween has to be among my favourite films, a classic film, the Rob Zombie remake was ok but didn't really add anything new to the series.

I have other favourite horror/supernatrual films but i'd be here for a while naming them all.

I am a big fan of Stephen King movies. While they are generally not as good as the books they are based on, they are usually streets ahead of most other films.

And of those, I'd say "IT", "Carrie" and "Firestarter" are my three favourite.

I'd have to say The Blair Witch Project and Marble Hornets. I don't like slasher movies; yes, it's visceral, and has shock value, but it's not necessarily frightening. Marble Hornets and especially The Blair Witch Project engages me on a more psychological level; they both delve into the fear of the unknown, which is one of the oldest fears mankind has. The fact of the alien nature of The Slender Man or the Blair Witch is what terrifies me; you can't reason with them, you can't appeal to their emotions (they aren't human) and once they decide to get you, you're gone. It's a lot like what H.P. Lovecraft was trying to get at in his stories.

Happy Halloween. ;)

I have watched The Shining over a dozen times and still get scared and have to cover my eyes. It scares the bejeebuz out of me. I also really liked the miniseries of it, too. Even though the original is scarier, I prefer the newer one because it is more in tune to the book.
I also love Poltergeist 1 and 3. When I was moving I flat refused any bedroom that had a mirrored closet door. It still freaks me out.
