Hey all, I'm Emilia (prefer Emmi, but it's cool either way) and I am here to bring you
the officially unoffical NaNoReMo thread (Part ONE?!).
This is just a place where people who signed up for Redemption Month
(over here: http://nanowrimo.org/en/forums/life-after-nanowrimo/threads/46064?page=1 )
can chat while writing their novels. Anyone can come in and chat as long as it's about writing!

I created Redemption Month after losing NaNo for the first time this year (so tragic...) and I thought I might as well see if anyone else would be up for redeming themselves (or finishing their NaNos or writing short stories or etc.) and a whole lot of people signed up. Anyone can join, and you don't even need to write 50,000. :)
This is just a supportive community for those of us who are still here and writing even though NaNo has been over for two months now (two already?!).

In order to prompt discussion, I have a question to ask you all:
Who's your main character this January?

Smartiez101
50141 words so far Winner!

Yay!! I was going to try for a NaNo in December but failed miserably so this sounds great.
Answer: I'm going to finish my Trapped series, and this time around it's Kristen, Raevin, and possibly Trinity? Wow, three and they're all females! o.o

Smartiez101
50141 words so far Winner!

changing storyline. the Trapped series will only be for the camp nanowrimos and next NaNoWriMo in Nov. Those always help me with writer's block...
So, I'm working on The Drakkon Reborn series first book but I don't know what it's called yet...
FMCs: Aria Yang and Willow Subin
MMC: Truvik Survik
I <3 my characters...
:3

Smartiez101
50141 words so far Winner!

foo, I forgot to add... I'm doing 55K since the last few days of December I worked on it and ended up with about 4K. I know it was more than 4K but less than 5K, and then I started working and completely forgot to check how many words. So I'm doing 55K to be fair.
So far I have 9K out of all 55. :3

RedBanjo

My main character's a battle mage called Stan Regas. He's on the quest to stop an army of undead from wiping out the last know human realm. Can't give you any more detail since that's all I have right now, lol.

So far I'm 2k in... and struggling! Woo! Roll on Feb 1st.

Tempest is my main character. She's fiery, yet cautious. And on the run with a guy she just met.

If anyone was wondering (which you probably weren't, but hey, whatever!) my main character is Reva June and so far she's attending high school in Oklahoma. :D

Jacklyn "Full Metal Jackie" Taylor: a SWAT sniper/ Mohten Reisr (Destroying Monster).
Victor Taylor: Swordsman/ Tesho Majir (Blade Mage)
Jinx: Bookstore worker/ Tanor Majir (Spoken Word Mage)

I should probably add the Scout (a monster similar to the Japanese kamaitachi, or sickle weasel), but as I have little in the way of him, I'm leaving him out for now.

KatiePoet

Hey all!

I'm here to finish my Nano. 108,917 words, and still not done. Can we say long winded? LOL. Hopefully this month I'll finally type those magical words -- "The end!"

My MC is a mad scientist named Dr. Benjamin Brutus. He's unbelievably sexy and fantastic, but when his wife dies, he kind of spirals into a depression. So he does what any self respecting mad scientist would do -- he brings her back to life.

Angryman
1107 words so far

I thought his name was Brutus, not Frankenstein. ;)

KatiePoet

LOL yeah, I know -- it's a modernized version of good ol' dr. frank -- with computers instead of monsters :) :) :)

maggiep

Good to see you here KatiePoet!

KatiePoet
56139 words so far Winner!

Yep! Glad you're here too, Maggie, and chugging on with that novel. Persistance is key. We'll get through this! LOL. How goes the world building?

maggiep
15973 words so far

May be a little battered and bruised when I get through, but I'll get there, Lol. World building is going great, thanks for asking. At least with the character department. I have vague ideas as to the world itelf. But getting the characters' personalities helps give a glimpse as to the place they live in. How are things going for you?

KatiePoet
56139 words so far Winner!

You know, for me -- characters are really what makes/breaks a book. I always remember my favorite characters from books, sometimes little else. So if your characters are good, your readers will fall in love with them and that's half the battle right there :) I remember being in high school, so in love with Mr. Darcy. Could I tell you the plot/scene of Pride and Pred? Nah. But I can describe Mr. D to you to the T! LOL.

Anyway -- my book's limping along. My FMC and MMC had a very romantic scene yesterday, which is fun for me to write :):):) Today, I'm limping along, I think because I know FMC has to die in a few scenes, and I'm going to miss her ::Tear:: ah, I'll get over it.

maggiep
15973 words so far

I am right there with you with Mr. Darcy. Except for me, my first preference is Captain Wentworth(Persuasion) *sigh* :)

And I agree too, if the characters are not exciting then it doesnt matter how the houses look or where the houses are at all....

Aw, I love romantic scenes(they are so hard for me to write though, but I still love them :) ). I understand limping along knowing your FMC is going to die. It's so hard writing those scenes. In my last book, my FMC died, I knew she would from the very beginning(it was based on a headstone, so death was obvious), and still, I was bawling when she died. I tried to make it as heroic and romantic as possible though, to give her death a meaning. I hope you can get through the limping stage without too much trouble.

I'm Katie! I'm so pumped for NaNoReMo. I've got a great twisted fairytale on my hands and I'm working out the details. Aury's the best nickname I've come up with so far for Aurelie and I have no idea how she and Charming are going to get stuck together but I'm confident. P=

I have faith in you RedBanjo! You can do it!

I'm trying my hardest to finish off a short story that I started last April so it's very much a 'redemption' month for me! At some point I need to go back and sort out the mess that is my past NaNo novels as well, but I figure if I start small it will be harder to fail. *sheepish grin*

Main character is Meg, short for Megan (last name unknown) and I'm roughly 3k into a planned 8k story. I feel silly having gotten stuck at what amounts to a Day 5 wordcount-- You'd think after NaNo this would be easier! :P

Sometimes its the ones that would seem the easiest(or at least be easier) to do that get us stuck the most.

Just hit the 10k mark. Maybe I shoulda made that my goal for the night :) 2k more to go....

Congrats! Good going! Knew you could do it :-)

Wish I had the same success... I got to 14,512 words before I couldn't keep my eyes open any more lol. But I'm ahead of my daily target :-) Aiming for 18k today

maggiep
15973 words so far

Thank you. I didn't want to disappoint you, and it feels nice having part 2 done. And hey, you did great. When your eyes start rebelling and closing, its time to sleep. It's good to be ahead of your daily target, that's great :)

My goal today, hmm....if nobody comes to the store I could get more done....Let's say, 15k? Yeah, 15k.

RedBanjo
64609 words so far Winner!

Well, I've disappointed myself. I didn't have time to write at all today and only managed to get to 15,600 :-( will make up for it tomorrow. Promise.

You reached 15k? If you do, we'll be on a par then and can race each other ;-)

maggiep
15973 words so far

Well, so far you are winning. I just brought the manuscript up. Wouldnt it figure, the day I thought I'd get a lot of writing done, all the women want to shop. So I'm still holding at last night's mark. Planning for another long night.(I gotta at least get to 15,600 right? :) )

RedBanjo
64609 words so far Winner!

I won't be winning for long! I'm working all weekend (next day off is wednesday) so not got many hours to write... Did you reach 15,600??

maggiep
15973 words so far

(I am hanging my head in shame) I didn't even get to 15k. I think Thursday's all nighter did me in for yesterday. I got a little over 14, maybe. I don't remember. I really had to push to get that and finally gave up and went to bed.
But....since you're working all weekend....which means between now and wednesday, I might get there, lol

RedBanjo
64609 words so far Winner!

All nighter? Ouch! You did well. If you're aiming for 50k this month, 14k is more than you need right now.

I'm at 17k, but I'm flagging. Long shifts at work don't help :-( won't happen, but I'm gonna aim for 20k tomorrow... *starts to cry*

maggiep
15973 words so far

Aw dont cry. Here, have a cupcake(this is when you use that imagination and pretend I made you a cupcake and all is good now : ) ).

Yeah, I've decided to take the weekend off. Tomorrow I'm going gaming with friends(have no idea what we're doing, but it'll be mindless, hopefully). I'll get back to the story after that.

RedBanjo
64609 words so far Winner!

*Greatfully accepts the cupcake*

Thanks! You're a good cook :-P Enjoy your weekend off! I'm beginning to hate my story atm... don't know if it's generally rubbish, whether I've reached "week 2" so soon, or whether I've set too high a goal for myself (80k is a lot more than 50k). Only time will tell...

maggiep
15973 words so far

Thank you. Next time I'll do cookies, if the need arises again :)

Ah, the "i hate my story" stage. I hate the "i hate my story" stage. It slows things down. Don't worry, you'll get over this brick wall, or smash through it, whichever method you prefer.

RedBanjo
64609 words so far Winner!

Lol, I just have done! The story itself was boring me, so I decided to go wild and do something crazy... And it worked! Things have just taken an unexpected direction and i'm loving it. Inspired by the crazy, I've managed to catch up (again) and am now sitting on 20,652 words :-)

Oh, and I wish I could cook. I once burnt toast twice in a run! (True story)

maggiep
15973 words so far

Yay for crazy :) You are so ahead of me, dangit :)

I can't cook. I love baking, but not cooking. Can't say as I've burnt toast twice in a row, but I've burnt pancakes(while still gooey inside. I was so bummed.) Still can't do pancakes. I hope your toast attempts have been better.

KatiePoet
56139 words so far Winner!

That's great Maggie! :-D Kudos!

Glad it's flowing along.

I've been keeping steady at about 2k per day lately...

been working on a poetry project too so that takes up about half my brain, leaving the other half for my nano. Balancing projects is fun X-D

maggiep
15973 words so far

You're doing great Katie! It's nice you can do a variety of writing. I tried poetry. Didn't go so well :/

KatiePoet
56139 words so far Winner!

Ah, poetry's great... where ever single syllable counts. Takes a lot of practice, though, and for course reading. I've been writing/publishing poetry for about 5 years. Actually, I'm MUCH more comfortable writing poetry -- fiction is my secondary "spec" heh... something new I'm trying just to stretch my imagination. I don't know if I can write fiction, but hehe that's not stopping me from trying.

maggiep
15973 words so far

According to your word count, you wrote something worthy :) It's always good to try spreading the wings further. What we think we can't do, may become our next passion.

RedBanjo
64609 words so far Winner!

Decided to reply down here instead of up there because the trend's leaning to the right a lot, although I'm quite curious to know how far right we can go :-P

So, we're around 9 days into the month. How everyone's doing with their novels? People still on track? Emmi (Ellipses), are you still in this??

@maggie, I'm getting better at cooking I'll have you know. But I'm staying away from anything as complicated as toast :-P

KatiePoet
56139 words so far Winner!

I'm doing pretty good -- about 19K since New Years.

Don't ask me how far along I am on my plot, though X-D Word count wise, I'm on track. Umm... plot wise? I'm always behind.

RedBanjo
64609 words so far Winner!

You're at over 100k and you're behind on plot?!? How?

Well, it's the words that count anyway (until you come to edit) - that's what I keep telling myself because my plot sucks. So at least you're not behind your target... like me again...

maggiep
15973 words so far

I was wondering too how far it goes :)

I'm glad the cooking is better. I try to stay away from the oven(unless its for cupcakes and cookies, any dessert thing). Although I did a quesidilla the other night and it came out good. Toast is a very tricky thing, just how high does one put the switch for toasting????

RedBanjo
64609 words so far Winner!

New word learnt: quesidilla. Can't say it. Don't know when I'll use it. But thanks. The worst part about toast is spreading the butter. I mean, you need a masters degree to figure that out!

You'll be happy to know I did 577 words yesterday, giving you a chance to catch up. Currently at 21,229. Not going to write much today either :-( I've also come to the conclusion that I'm not a fantasy guy. Why I decided to write fantasy, I don't know. After I finish this novel, I'm going to stick with sci fi.

maggiep
15973 words so far

It is pronounced(hopefully I get this right for you)- kay-suh-dee-uh (definitely not like how its spelled)

Lol, ah yes, the butter spreading. I have to admit, I am like my grandfather with this. We are both freakishly obsessed with getting every centimeter of bread covered, smoothly, evenly. It takes time and practice. Mom and Grandma roll their eyes at us. They could be halfway done eating and we are still spreading.

I am smacking myself cuz giving myself the weekend off has only made me slack. So, seeing as you are now at, or rather over, 21k, I'm getting back. Seriously, bringing the document up now. Mmhm, yep.(21k?! oh man. can't you slow down for me? :) )

Fantasy can't be too hard for you, seeing as you are at 21,229 :)

Carolf
65544 words so far Winner!

It is spelled as it sounds ... in Spanish!

It translates as : a little cheesey thing

RedBanjo
64609 words so far Winner!

Fantasy is hard. I can't find a way to make it as gruesome and as scary as I'd like, and the problem with the story I've written so far is it's far too complicated. Because I'm not used to writing fantasy, I'm trying too hard, and therefore messing up :-(

I love lots of butter on my toast. And jam. Mmmmm... jam toast...

maggiep
15973 words so far

That's how my grandma made it for me when I was little, and now I love it. Raspberry jam is my favorite.

maggiep

Carolf

Jumping in: I'm in rewrite stage for my Nano effort. Was out of town last week, but still managed a critical reading of the thing, and got all the easy changes done. Then I came down with bronchitis. Right now, I'm not doing much but sleeping. But as soon as I feel better ... watch out!

Main character: Brian Whitlowe. He's a techie nerd programmer, who finds a programming error that pits him up against an international cartel operating on the moon.

RedBanjo
64609 words so far Winner!

Sounds interesting. My curiosity peaked when I read the "on the moon" part :-) are you rewriting from scratch, or editing when you've got?

RedBanjo wrote:

I'm editing what I have, mostly. I'm adding scenes where needed, moving a few around. That's the intermediate stuff. Then I have some real character and plot issues to work out -- that's the hard stuff.

Whether or not I do a complete rewrite will depend on what I have when I finish this draft.

My hero ends up on the moon accidentally on purpose (not his) and spends the first third of the novel there, trying to cope and get back to his regular life. The second third takes place in Chicago, where he does more research into the problem he found on the moon, and where he blows the whistle. The final third has him hiding out in Ann Arbor from both the bad guys and the good guys (they don't know he's a good guy, yet), finally ending up in jail. That actually ends up being the best break he's had since he landed on the moon. While he's on Earth, his friends back on the moon are aiding and abetting him all the way.

I have to admit, it's been fun working this one.

RedBanjo
64609 words so far Winner!

Lol, 'accidentally on purpose'. I bet you had fun writting it!

When I edit, I struggle when it comes to moving scenes around. I might have one scene really early in the novel that is full of action and drama that deserves to be towards the end of the novel, but I can't bring myself to move it. I get scared of messing up, so I leave it and hope for the best.

In some cases, it's pretty obvious I need to move things. Frankie can't re-route Brian before she learns how to do it, so I have to include a scene where she figures it out. On the other hand, Brian will still be a wanted terrorist until Strathcockle's aid gets him off the hook, and that happens after Strathcockle resigns, so the resignation scene has to move back. That kind of thing.

Since this is my first novel, I'm not as facile as I'd like to be with recognizing good pacing. The kind of scene exchanges you're referencing fall in that category. I had a lot of problems with that at the start of the novel. I think I've switched out at least three scenes in various combinations before I hit on what I think works.

maggiep
15973 words so far

I just typed a sentence, finishing the word count at-21,229 :) That was not planned :)

RedBanjo
64609 words so far Winner!

Wow, you've caught up! I had a day off yesterday to recharge my batteries, so we're even now :-) but I have three days off now so you've got your work cut out for you lol.

Decided my target of 80k is too much for a novel I don't care about anymore. I really, really, really want to go write sci fi now. But at the same time, I don't want to quit. So I'm gonna aim to finish this novel at 50k, and start another sci fi novel... counting the words of both into my total of course :-P

maggiep
15973 words so far

Yeah, I'm not really sure how I did it. But I'm not gunna think too hard on it. I'm not sure how long the story is, figured originally around 25k, now thinking a little closer to 30k. Short, I know.

I hope it turns around and you start liking your story again. Isn't it rebellous to count two stories as one word count? :)

RedBanjo
64609 words so far Winner!

Awww! I wanna count the two together :-P Fine, I'll count them seperately.

Today's been another wasted day for me now... Except I've come up with the idea for my sci fi book :-) tbh, I think I'm gonna start that instead. I know I said I'd finish the fantasy one first (and I'm feeling really, really, really guilty for not finishing what I started) but it's just not happening. I'll keep it to one side and maybe come back to it. And, as penance, I'm going to write at least 50k from now til the end of Jan (eek).

You may be ahead of me (since now I'm technically on 0,000) but watch this space...

maggiep
15973 words so far

Well, I'm not gunna judge how you count. If you want to combine both, that's your choice(technically Im just annoyed that I didnt think about that for November :) )

It's been a wasted day so far for me too. Busy morning, now doing tax stuff. Oh, the joy. Woohoo. But I will get some writing done. I will.

I'm happy to hear you have the idea for your sci fi, that's proof today hasn't been totally wasted.

Your poor fantasy characters, pushed aside, being forgotten. I can hear them crying now....Poor things. Tsk tsk. :)
Maybe it's for the best right now though, maybe some space is needed.

And on my end-I'm now 21,229 words ahead of you, yay! :)

abbyyoyo2
9274 words so far

I'm gonna jump in on this too. I'ditn' finish my NaNo in November and only worked on it a little durring December, yesterday I hit 8k Very proud it's hard to find tiime to write around school work Blah!

My Main Charaters are Skylar an escaped convict and known Rebel, Evan a hardcore prision gaurd/goverment security officer (severly to mildly insane), and Bradley a trainee cop who is caught between helping the goverment he's been taught to respect or Skylar the only person to show him respect and friendship.

I think it's a kind of cool story, it's like Si-Fi action-y thing. annnyywway i better go the bell just rang. lol Nanoing at school.
