Death falls in love

So, I had this idea pop in my head. Where it came from, I have no idea. The very depths of my brain I guess. Anywho, I saw this scene, and a story fell into place. A world where Death is a man. He knows exactly who is going to die, when, where, why, etc.... If he touches someone, they will die. So he lives a very lonely life(as in no friends, family). And then one day, walking down an alley or street, a door bangs open in front of him and a girl tumbles out. He moves out of the way just in time, a breath's space between them, so he does not touch her and kill her. She looks at him, and that's it, he falls in love. The problem, he can't touch her or she will die.

Idk, it's just this scene that keeps playing in my head.

This sounds cute, like maybe the girl is kind of ditzy and really nice and fun. And Death is like, erm... he's like death. Great unlikely romance story idea. You should go for it. (I don't know what kind of response you're looking for here but I give this a thumbs up.)

I think Family Guy actually does a joke version of that :) I forget the episode, but death is in love with a pet shop owner, and actually ends up touching and killing her at the end.

I think it's a cute idea. Sort of king midas-ish.

Re: Death falls in love

Oh, and Pushing Daisies. The guy there can bring people back to life with one touch, but then they die again the next time he touches them. He brings the girl he was in love with back to life, but can't touch her ever again or she'll die irreversibly. They have a really cute romance with kissing through plastic wrap and stuff since they can't touch skin to skin. Maybe you can use some of that too in the romance part? Of course, being formerly dead she knows she'll die again if he touches her, which your other one might not, so that would be interesting to try to explain.

I understand! Yeah, my current novel had to "stew" for about a year before i was ready to put it down on paper at all. I need to get a feel for the characters (and then I get to know them a little too well...) and the general plot. I like to run through scenes in my head before bed at night, then I get wild dreams X-D Yay! Good thing I don't write horror... LOL! But how exciting :) I was just thinking about your idea right now, and it sent a chill down my back. Thinking about loving someone without being able to touch them... that's actually really really sad :(

That's what I was thinking too, about not being able to touch them. How would he rescue her, in a case where he might have to(like if she was drowning. it was just a scenerio(spelled right? hmm) that I came up with), kiss, hold hands....a definite challenge indeed.

It is a good thing you don't write horror, or you may never sleep :)

Have you ever read "On a Pale Horse?" It's not exactly the same idea, but it is about the person of Death and he does fall in love. It's a pretty cute read if you're looking to see what's already been done (and what hasn't). I think most libraries have a copy.

Good luck with the new idea!

Yep. This is supposed to be a comedy. And what little I have so far is pretty good. The head Death is Japanese, and despite having centuries of learning other languages, he still has troubles with them. He also has the worst handwriting out of everyone. "I have come to reap your... soai? What the-? Hey, you, can you read this? My boss can't write to save, or reap, a life. Soul? Oh, yes. That's it. I'm here to reap your soul."

Yeah, this could get really bizarre...

Sooo . . . what happens when the ex-boyfriend shows up? This could be really fun as they try to have a "normal" romance. Meeting the parents, going on dates . . . how awkward would going to a dance club be?

Perhaps gloves would work? Depends on how you decide the "touch" thing works. Then you'd just get the "your boyfriend always wears gloves...that's...quirky" comments.

Re: Death falls in love

Good point. We all imagine Death as male, or at least most people do. I think the Greek god of death, Thanatos, has something to do with it. I know that I have Deaths in my story that are women, but again, Death is a business in my story. If you want a more typical "There's only one Death", then who says it has to be a man?

...I feel like a feminist for that last sentence, and I'm a guy. Weird.

Lol, quite the feminist. Seriously though, that is a good point both of you bring out. I immediately thought man because, well, that is what my imagination saw. But if Death was a woman, perhaps that is why the girl stumbled out of the door so quickly, because She almost touched someone. She almost collides into the guy who sees her and becomes pulled in. But She can't touch him. *Sigh* Now you two have me thinking.... :)

I like this story idea ... although I don't fairly like the western manifestation of death that much (Grim Reaper etc...) I really like Shinigami like the ones in death note ... if I remember death note had a subplot with a human/shinigami relationship...

What about if he traded in being Death, but the price is he can only live a year, or some small amount?
Reading books about Death being anthropomorphized is always interesting (and i probably didn't spell that right, but thats the term Terry Prachet uses.)

Sir Terry Pratchett uses the term anthropomorphic personification, so I think the word you are looking for is personified. Anthropomorphism, which anthropomorphic derives from, means "the attributing of human shape or characteristics to gods, objects, animals, etc."
