Literary Fiction Dares, 2011!

And presenting the mostly annual LitFic Dares Thread! Have an idea that you think would be awesome, or awesomely bad, in a LitFic? Leave it as a dare. And, assign a relatively random point value to it, just for that added level of competitiveness. Get stuck at some point? Grab a dare off our thread.

I'll get us started off. (Thanks, mattkinsi!)

A piece of artwork talking would be fantastic, and I think it would actually fit into my novel quite well. Thanks for that!

I can't think of any dares of my own at the moment, but if I do I shall post them here.

+10 if the box suddenly runs out

...and here I thought I was going to be clever by having my MC stumble across a write-in and be suckered into joining up!

(Semi-ironically, this is why I have no chance at taking baka-neko's dare from below for never stepping foot in a coffee shop. My MC is an AUTHOR, how can she NOT go into a coffee shop? and in November, all coffee shops are fair game for write-ins :)

Can I still get the points if she's going to cheat and use the novel she already has in progress?

I would love to also do the 10,30,and 50 point name dares. I will see if I can do the 200 point one since I am undecided on my title at this point. My working title, instead of being hilarious, would fall a little flat as the name I think. But not as one of the nicknames!

I want to give a main character my name... instead I just make her feel the same way about her name as I feel about mine.

Also, while it isn't "nanowrimo", 6 of my characters are writing novels as a part of a writing group, and I intend to include excerpts from each!

+5 if one of your characters is given a small, unharmed foreign bird by a cat belonging to one of the neighbors.
+10 when your protagonist steals a 1980s volvo from the parking garage of a catholic hospital and uses it to hide something important
+15 for not actually writing a novel so much as an exegesis on another novel you like from the perspective of a hypothetical person who views that novel as a divinely-inspired religious text, for example a metafictional attempt to base a ufo cult on william goldman's "the princess bride".

+ 25 on top of THAT if at one point, they don't speak in rhyme and no one understands what they're saying

+10 if the an inanimate object (the same object) appears in every chapter.

My contribution:

+5 if one of your characters has major issues with their height
+10 if this is because they are too short
+15 if they go to extreme measure to make themselves appear taller/smaller
+20 if your too short/tall character is actually an average height
double points if this is central to the plot AND remains unresolved at the end of your novel

or:

+5 if one of your characters keeps a diary
+10 if you include excerpts
+20 if the excerpts make no sense, and have zero relevance to the plot
+50 if one of these excerpts is "My mother is a fish."
and a cookie if you recognized that reference :)

That is so so brilliant. Battle of the concepts :) Could make an excellent French novels in the 60s.
I really like the +200 as I imagined a pretentious college type character who would take everything literally and because of drug abuse, ends up losing words (makes no sense, whatever)

+10 if your FMC is frequently accused of being a bitch
+15 if the FMC hasn't done anything to warrant the bitch epithet
+ 20 if those accusing your FMC of major bitchdom are, in fact, the ones guilty of said bitchiness or hostility
+ 25 if they've acted out their bitchiness/hostility in some physical way (ie throwing objects at FMC)
+ 30 if FMC thinks being called a bitch is a sign from above and makes a major change in her life
+ 100 if major change is to become MORE bitchy after which previous accusers find her to be much more pleasant

A random list because I know I'll take some throughout the month:

+10 if nothing much really happens in your novel
+15 if your title explicitly gives away the one big plot point
+20 for the inclusion of a were-dragoness (and a cookie if it serves no purpose whatsoever)

+10 for a character who constantly makes "my mom" jokes
+15 if the character makes "my mom" jokes to his/her mother
+20 if the father/stepfather thinks it's funny

+10 for an adult protagonist who thinks EVERYTHING is cool
+15 if s/he believes terrorists are cool
+20 if s/he constantly uses the expression "fondue pops for everyone!"

What a great list of dares! I think Hemingway will definitely have to make an appearance in my story. Extra points if he shows up while the MC is visiting the bull ring in Ronda?

+5 for including a quote from Jane Austen AND Chuck Palahniuk in the story
+10 if the quotes are relevant to the story
+15 if the Palahniuk quote is from something other than Fight Club

Happy November 1!
+25 for a 1,000 word, grammatically correct sentence.
+75 if it contains no semicolons.
+500 if it contains no punctuation at all.

+20 if every chapter is set in a different location

+25 if every peripheral character is you, the author (eg. MC overhears a strange conversation you once had on a bus)
Definitely going to make every chapter set in a different location! I may do the peripheral character as well since my novel is a bit autobiographical fiction anyway!

I'm mixing and matching all these wonderful dares, so thank you! Here is my contribution:

+5 MC has to make an important, but unspecified, meeting but, due to events in the novel, has to keep rescheduling it.
+50 if MC never makes it to the meeting
+100 if, in the last chapter or so, MC makes it, but the other party never shows or has to reschedule.

+5 if you have a paragraph that is 26 sentences long and every sentence begins with the next letter of the alphabet (you can start with any letter and go around the horn).
+100 if you can do this for a whole chapter
+250 if it is the climax of the novel.

OH SNAP.

I already have characters who speak only in rhymes and they make sense and are relevant to the story.:)

I might do + 25 when at one of the parody junctions in my novel when one of the rhyme characters decides to go to an open mic night and attempts free-verse.

I've taken so many from this thread, leaving:

+10 if you write a scene that explores the etymology of a word.
+50 if you do not use the word.

+10 if you write a scene in which the only action is the washing of a potato.
+20 if it does not take place in a kitchen.
+20 if the potato is not intended for eating.

+10 if you write a descriptive passage using colour terms to describe things that do not have colour as a property (e.g. colourful sounds, colourful smells, colourful sensations).
+50 if you write this passage from the point of view of a character who is visually-impaired.

oh my. I'd forgotten about Auto-Summarize. I now have one hundred words of summary, eleven of which are the word "Blue." This is only ironic if you understand that one of the main focal points of my novel is the color yellow. "Yellow" is not in the summary at all.....

Auto-Summaries never fail to disappoint in terms of amusement, at least. :D

Now to take on this dare!

Take something that normally would not be presented as slice-of-life, and present it that way.
BP: If the situations are completely unrealistic/surreal.
DBP: If no matter how odd things get, the characters act as if this is the most ordinary thing in the world.
TBP: If this is used to show the absurdity of everyday life.
