Hi all! My name is Nikki, 28, and this is my second time doing nanowrimo.. This year i'm writing a fictional memoir about a little girl who tries to kill her older sister and is then convinced she's going to hell and whips herself into a religious frenzy to avoid doing so. I'm writing it from the pov of her adult self and I'm thinking I'm going to be heavily influenced by Darcey Steinke's _Jesus Saves_ and by _The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time_. Character driven but not without plot. Sound mainstream? Would you read it? Thanks!
I would certainly read it - and will if you want to do a novel swap?! That sounds likea very interesting book, although I've only heart of the Dog in the Night Time - if you can pull it off I think it would be brilliant.
I hope to pull it off, only I have tremendous plot development issues. Always have. So we'll have to see! I'm planning ahead this year hopefully that will help. If I do manage I would like to do a novel swap! I've never done one, so that would be very interesting.
Written from the POV of a middle-aged man, he basically is finding stories about his dad who recently died. Just simply stories here are there, some from his dad's childhood, some from WW2, some from his job, and so on. I had another plot outline all set up this year but the characters were very dry. They were all the same, you know? So I'm writing this one instead.
Does fictional memoir mean you're writing a memoir based on a fictional character, or does it include taking your experiences and writing them in a fictional way?
I want to write a fictionalized version of my pregnancy and what led me to placing my son for adoption, but I'm not really sure where that falls.
I'm writing a fictionalized version of the year 2004 and (changing names) basing the plot on that one year where this girl moved in next door to me and we were best friends for a single year and it was the best - and most exciting - summer of my life :)
I'm writing a fictional memoir this year too, though mine's firmly in the parody/satire/comedy genre. I haven't written in 1st person for an age, though, so I don't know how well it's going to go.
Well, after day one of 1st person POV I'm starting to realise that my MC has a strange sense of humour and of looking at the world. But I think I can write him, so go me.
Hi, I managed to hit 50k last year with a fictionalised memoir in the third person (He did this and that...etc) and I am now going to try a similar memoir but in the first person so I can write about 'my' feelings. I've read that writing from 'I' is difficult and I am looking forward to the challenge but does anyone have any tips/insights/advice that may smooth my path to the summit?
I grew up in a rooming house. There will be much to pull from as I write a fictionalized memoir. It will start from the time we moved in and began renting out rooms - I was age 10 - until I reach 50,000 words, lol!
If it were well written I would read it. I fear that the whole main character being a kid (even if told from an adult POV) would be difficult to maintain interest.
I am writing a fictional memoir: its the fictional character's memoir but is written like a novel. She's a young woman who is trafficked out of the country. It starts off with her background: family, school, previous relationships then moves into her being trafficked then rescued to later write this novel. The preface kind of raises the question of is it really her story, or just a story that she wrote. Its based on my graduate research on trafficking women.

Re: fictional memoir
I would. I love these kinds of stories... very intriguing.

Re: fictional memoir
Sounds like mainstream fiction to me. I would read it for sure.
:D Good luck!
This is also my second year and I'm also doing a fictional memoir... weird. o.O
Re: fictional memoir
Wow! That's spooky :) What is yours about?

Re: fictional memoir
I'm curious to see how your story goes...I'm gonna add you as a writing buddy as soon as we are able. I luv your idea.
Re: fictional memoir
Mine is rather cliche' but it's about a man driving home for a funeral.
Re: fictional memoir
I guess it all depends on what happens during the trip, eh?

Re: fictional memoir
Memoir based on a fictional character.
That sounds like an interesting read!

Nice to know I'm not alone. *waves*
Re: fictional memoir
Hi, Mariana! I love satirical/comedic memoirs, the drier the better. Writing in the first person is a challenge, I agree with you there. Good luck!!

Re: fictional memoir
Did you feel like it worked in the 3rd person? That's what I am doing. Mostly I am happy with it though it seems emotionally remote.
Re: fictional memoir
I simply love the idea of a fictional memoir... I came up with an idea several years ago and just now putting it in words.
Re: fictional memoir
I guess I'm sort of doing this too. I'm doing a fictionalized version of a relationship I was in, but changing a few things.

Re: fictional memoir
That sounds like a great basis for a novel. I would definitely read it! Good luck!
Re: fictional memoir

It also sounds like a good idea, but I'm not too into religious stories.
Re: fictional memoir
This is my first year doing this project.

Re: fictional memoir
Meh, wish I could do that. It'd involve a whole lotta worldbuilding, though. I mean, around the character.
