Attention Teen Journalists! (Or anyone interested in creating a magazine)

Hi! I've been around the boards for a few years now, but I mostly lurk. My name is Catherine, I'm a 16 year old Junior in high school.

I just got finished with a semester of Newspaper class and I'm desperately going to miss it, so I had an idea to start an internet magazine of sorts and I knew that Nano was the best place to find those willing to be a part of it!

My basic idea: An internet magazine hosted on Tumblr. I would use blogspot, but blogspot is outdated. Tumblr is what all the cool kids are using now. :p It would hopefully have its grand opening on Febuary 1st. The content would be written by teenagers, for teenagers, about anything the writers felt like writing. There wouldn't be monthly or weekly issues, but a continuous stream of articles daily. Photographers welcomed too.

I'll put more details in the next post to keep them a reasonable length.

Re: Attention Teen Journalists! (Or anyone interested in creating a magazine)

Who I'm looking for:
-A managing editor.
The managing editor's job would be to take care of the magazine while I'm away. He or she would also have the password to the Tumblr account and would help post articles. They would also write articles.

-Copy Editor:
The copy editor's job would be to edit all of the articles submitted for error. This is a lofty task, so there could be co-copy editors if needed.

Writers!

We would have a news section, opinion section, photography section, short story/poetry section, and whatever else is suggested.

I'm willing to have up to 20 writers. If you're interested, post and we'll talk!

What I'm really looking to make is the magazine I can never find; something relavent to my life, something that deals with the issues that I and others my age are really going through, instead of the angsty, irrelavent magazines aimed at teenagers that can be found in book stores.

Hmm...Glad I was curious and clicked on this! I will most diffidently be interested in writing some stuff for this...Of course though all legal matters will have to be handled through my attorney...Oh just kidding I don't even have one of those [14 teen here] but just put my name and whatever on it. Anyways enough cheesy jokes I will be willing to do some writing and maybe a little editing if needed [Not my strongest suit but I'll give it a shot]. I'll be pressing the refresh button waiting for a reply ;]

Wow! I'm glad I'm getting such a good response. You're all welcome to join. Christina Huling, would you be interested in being the main copy editor? If so, you can "hire" others to help you.

I'm not really sure what else to say... does anyone have any questions?

Any name ideas? Once we get a name we can all agree on, I can make the blog and we can get started.

Also, if everyone would write a little bit about themselves so we can all get properly introduced, that would be nice. :)

I'm Catherine, as I said before. 16. My favorite book series is Harry Potter (original, I know) and I love Howl's Moving Castle. I'm currently in IB French class. I have one dog, Daisy, who is my plump little sausage, and one cat, Rose, who hates me.

Gogogo!

As for me, my name is Elle, I'm 17 and a senior in high school. I'm getting certified in Graphic Communications which is how I got into photography. I'm in love with Harry Potter, fanfiction, and extremely loud Alternative music. I have a younger brother named Liam, sand a German Shepard named Dakota.

Re: Attention Teen Journalists! (Or anyone interested in creating a magazine)

This seems awesome and I'd totally be a writer/photographer.
A note on the copy-editor idea: after they edit the writing (especially if its short story/poetry) they should probably send the new copy to the writer, because sometimes people purposefully have unstructured sentences(or at least I do this). That way you won't get writers all up in arms about anyone "messing up their vision" or anything like that.

Moving on: Hi, I'm Adeline, 16, Junior. I'm one of those super artsy-fartsy folk that does just about anything that has to do with expression and stuff. I don't read as much as I'd like to, but I tend to read more fantasy books although my favorites are usually realistic fiction (the Great Gatsby) or historical fiction (The Book Thief) which probably has more to do with the fact that those authors both write with great imagery and I love me some imagery. I love music, I listen to it for at least an hour a day if not more. I am always looking for more. I tend to listen to a mix of folk, soft rock, alternative and acoustic, with jazzy hints thrown in.

Toodles!

Re: Attention Teen Journalists! (Or anyone interested in creating a magazine)

I see what you mean with copy editing. Our articles and opinion pieces should obviously be grammatically correct, but in fiction rules can bend. I'm fine with fragments, and I actually use them all the time, but fair warning: I may go postal on semicolons and dangling participles and comma splices and lay vs. lie and whom. But I can see when perfect sentence construction yields its importance to dramatics and flow. Poetry is also different. I write (mostly terrible) poetry and I get that poetry sometimes sacrifices grammar for art. Poems should stay as they are except for typos.

This just turned from a general response to a specific method of grammar-sorting. How does it sound?

So you can call me Chii. I'm 15, in tenth grade, I speak German and English, I learn French and Latin. In my free time, I rant a lot about many things. Other than that, I read (mostly Fantasy, though I've started reading some classics lately) and draw a lot. Music is writing fuel to me, so I listen to it a lot. German Folk, Symphonic Metal, Death Metal (at least that's what a classmate called it...), J-Pop, K-Pop, Soundtracks. I'm also really nerdy and fangirl a lot, mostly about novels and shows.

Well hello everyone, I've already said I was going to do this but I didn't exactly weigh in. So the name's Karyssa [And yes I did spell that right, my mom wanted to be creative...] and I am fourteen and a freshman [Freaking out about exams at the moment! My music's hopeless but I might do well in everything else]. I enjoy being a fan girl to! I noticed Hikiro- Lauren's icon and just have to say LOVE IT! Hunny is just so cute!

Okay before this turns into yet another OHSHC rant I will continue. My favorite book series is most likely the Harry Potters...Not very creative but I love them and I love the fan fictions [Any one here fans of non- canon shippings?] and when I am really bored I read Yaoi fan fictions...Of some very random books and shows...Don't ask trust me on this one.

I also listen to J-Pop [A lot it confuses people and that is really funny!] as I have seen on this thread before. I want to learn Japanese however my school doesn't offer it and it's so complicated...Anyways well that's me in a nutshell. As for a title I've got nothing.

I think for poetry and even short stories because I tamper with my sentence structure all the time in those, maybe there should be recommendations for how to do the grammar but not actual changes. Oh I suck at commas so that's good for me personally (you know they never actually taught us how to use the comma correctly in school..). I strive to have more proper use of commas but I often use fragments and sometimes (I don't really know why) I just decide not to capitalize the beginning of a sentence if it's poetry on purpose, you are warned.

I'd be interested in writing if I'm not too old and you still need people. I'm 18 and a senior in high school from the US. I'd be fine with writing just about anything. There was a brief period in which I was a staff member on the school newspaper, but I spend more time on the lit mag. I also love Harry Potter and random bands the majority of teenagers don't know/care about. And I have a puppy. Just wanted to throw that out there.

Any of you into Asian Pop ever heard of Justin Lo? I love his chipmunk voice.

I have an idea. It's pretty simple, but it just popped into my head. Gender neutral, too.

Zero.

Just Zero.

And the url zeromag.tumblr.com isn't taken yet.

Anyone have any comments/suggestions/objections?

I don't know, I'm bad at naming things. Just look at my own blog URL. noonecanhelpme... >.>

Okay. Introductions. My name is Lec, I'm 17 this year (seriously amigawd how did I get so old let me just curl into a ball and dieeeeee). I'm taking a predominantly arts pre-college course, with focus on English Linguistics, Literature, Economics, and Math to round it off. On the off time, I try to write, but I also photograph and draw (though less frequently).

I don't say I read prolifically, but I do try to read at least 30 books a year. Most of my readings fall between fantasy and young adult, but I have been making forays into adult fiction, or taking recommendations from friends to try out new authors. -nods-

well i took your title as more of a social outcast, like were a band of socially awkward slightly if not completely misunderstood teenagers that like to write.
If you want to go with that theme I suggest Typos, because its like a typo in what normal teenagers should be and what they should be doing.

Other than that I suggest odd but interesting words as a title:
-Raconteurs (talented storyteller)
-The Nubivagant (meaning moving among the clouds)
or Scripturient (having a strong urge to write)
uhhhh, yea those are my suggestions.

I suppose if they're teens, it is absolutely no problem. :D

I feel like doing a mini-series, where I just post for example 10 tips for editing, 1 tip per post, per day. Or something. Smaller and easier to read, less scary to look through. And when all 10 are posted, consolidate them into 1 post and post that as the 'masterlist'.

Is that a can do?

And I would also love to be a writer, perhaps opinion pieces? I need to practice essay writing, so if you're willing to have someone write what could be considered totally awful writing, this would be a fun way to do it and get my opinions out there. :)

Wow! This sounds like an awesome idea!!

While my schedule does not allow me to contribute at this time (unless you want the thirty minute essays I've been writing for English Comp. o_O ), I will definitely be bookmarking the link and checkin' in every now and then. =D

One question, just for clarity..
What sorts of topics did you envision for "news" and "opinion"?

They just seem like rather broad topics.. perhaps narrowing it down would help people get a greater sense of what you want to see.

I'm excited for all y'all!

I would love to participate in this as well! I was originally going to say I could help out as a copy editor, but it seems like a lot of other writers have already expressed an interest in that. I could maybe be a managing editor if you were still in need of one. I have a lot of spare time since I'm not working on any other serious projects right now. And then, of course, I would love to write!

Hi, I'm fifteen.
I don't know if I could commit to a continual editorial or writing job, especially since I don't really know anything about the subject of your magazine. I've already got my plate full writing for magazines as it is.

I think News might not be possible, just because it's so different for everyone. For the opinion section, I'm thinking about current issues, politics, world events, book and movie reviews, rants, etc.

Ali123, you can have the position of Managing Editor if you're still interested. Just send an e-mail with your picture or a picture that represtents you and a bio to the e-mail above. ^^ :)

AdMalouf, you don't have to be a full-time writer to participate! If you wanted to send in one of two things every once in a while (or even just one time), go to the submission section of the website or send it in an e-mail. There are no obligations.

This sounds really interesting! I'm opinion editor at my school paper, so I can't commit to any full time thing, but I could definately do an article every few weeks! Also how are you editing back and forth? And you should consider finding someone who can do art! (Either to go with the articles or as stand alone pieces, I don't have a tumblr so not sure how that would work) This sounds like a great idea though, I'd love to be a part of it.

@Hikiro-Lauren- If you wanted to make a logo, that would be incredible. Seriously incredible.

THIS is an important message for anyone who has expressed interest so far:

I'm going to be frank here. This project can't get off the ground without submissions. I'm currently working on a few myself and someone submitted a mini-series type of thing already, but without more than just that the project will stall. Which I really don't want.

I'm decent in HTML/CSS, and I've made my own themes for my own Tumblr before. I'm pretty minimalist when it comes to design, but I can create a theme with whatever you'd like.

Hi. If you needed help for anything let me know. I'm a 21 year old English major/Communications minor with plans to become a novelist and high school teacher. I'm currently a junior in my second semester and like to focus on women, feminist, fantasy and historical literature and films. My writing is usually in the thriller/horror, action, drama, fantasy, or historical genre with a focus on young college or late high school students. I unfortunately, do not do much with html but do have an understanding of both blogger and wordpress types of blogs.

Hi! Wow, I found this really late. Oops!

If you are still interested or need a slot or back-up or something like that, I would be interested in it! Copy-editing sounds like a lot of fun to do on a consistent basis. If there's one thing I learned this past NaNo, it's that I love to edit ^_^

I'm 16 years old and a Junior in high-school, too. Anyway, if you are interested, send me a NaNo mail! If not, best of luck with this idea - it sounds awesome!
