Ooh, tough one. My plot is pretty twisty.

A couple big ones: The president of a major processed-cheese producing corporation turns out to be the reincarnation of the dog star Sirius.

His long time rival, the reincarnation of the Greek God Aristaeus, was basically the one to cause everything going on in the plot.

Re: What's Your Big Twist?

My one big twist, I just figured out the other day, might not occur for a few books (rather like the emperor in Star Wars). In the end I plan on having the villain manipulating all the crimes my detective solves as being his "late" wife. It seems she died when a "unabomber type" kidnapped her and blew up the yacht she was on. But unbeknownst to my protagonist, she lived and prospered under the tutilage of the "bomber" and has been manipulating everyone around the protagonist to commit all manner of crimes.

The first of which is a series of serial murders/rapes.
The second is going to involve a homicidal priest.

The one thing I haven't figured out yet, is her motives for doing this, when she apparently loved my protagonist. Perhaps it was money. Perhaps it was power. Love for the Antagonist. Just a bad case of PMS. I'm not sure. If there are any ideas for motives, I'd appreciate them.

I have a big twist right at the end, but I am hoping that it doesn't come as a big twist at all. There are hints all the way through the story, and while I am hoping it might surprise people, I don't want it to be a "what the hell?" ending (like "Happytown" was - that was a truly appalling example of what a "twist" can be).

The first person killed is not connected at all to the rash of suspicious deaths that follow. His death is actually an accident--the cartel hitman who kills him went to the wrong hotel, and killed the wrong guy.

All the rest of the deaths that follow are due to the machinations of the cult attempting to bring about the End of Days ;-þ

Re: What's Your Big Twist?

In the last half of the book, my main character's female friend-bordering-on-sidekick, a government-appointed official, is actually using him to discredit and defeat a political rival (who the main character dislikes, but respects). In addition, he has no way to achieve his own aims without allowing her to - opposing her would mean instant and utter defeat. The worst part is that he deliberately initiated the chain of events leading to this, knowing what would occur, thinking he would come out on top.

This might not seem like much of a twist, but it completely changes the tone of the piece from semi-altruistic to a black-and-gray perspective where nobody is in the right. Most of the twists in this piece are heavily built-up-to, foreshadowed, and almost don't feel like twists when you reach them.

My book is all about this seventeen year old kid trying to find out what happened to his disappeared dad, and I've only thought of one twist so far:

-There are a bunch of family photos of the family and some random woman. The kid's mom always said that this was his dad's sister. It turns out, though, that the woman is really someone the dad had an affair with (not his sister, no incest)

I think I want to put more twists in there, but this is the only one that I've got the sotory set up for.

The biggest twist I have so far is that when the murderer is revealed, it's also revealed that the first victim was innocent of the action the killer attributed to him. And since every other action was to cover up that original killing, it was really all for nothing.

Well my novel deals with several serial killers so there are lots of little twists.

The one I'm writing right now is that the female victim is not who they thought she was. Maybe she's the male victim's sister or minister or the woman he's having an affair with - but now they need to know why she was attacked until unrecognizable.

The big novel twist will deal with someone this detective trusts becoming so untrustworthy that she put the entire family in danger.

Re: What's Your Big Twist?

Twist One: The main character is a really good guy. The story follows just how good he is. Towards the end of the novel he is told by the mob leader that he has two days to kill his two infant children or the mob will do it for him, slowly, before then killing him. Their death is inevitable and so, naturally, he kills his children in an act of humanity.

Twist Two: The mob leader comes back, tells him he's a horrible human being because who would murder children? The mob leader is not going to kill him now because he thinks it'll be more tortuous for him to have to live with what he's done.

It's left ambiguous as to whether the mob leader was ever going to kill the MCs children, or whether he was just playing mind tricks.

my novel is the autobiography of the main character, but he refers to himself in the third person, and you only find out in the very end.

It starts: "He never wore a watch. He pulled out of the driveway in his rusted, black pick-up."
It ends:

Over the next several weeks, Cobb slowly regained his mobility. He was still in the hospital, but his brother and family spent as much time with him as they could. The whole time he felt guilty for pursuing something so meaningless, and for the massive debt that he was accruing during his prolonged stay. The physical therapy seemed more like physical torture than anything, and he ended each session with self-loathing at his inability to perform even simple tasks like lifting a cup or wiggling his toes. He began writing again, simply to pass the time, until one day, while talking to the psychologist it occurred to him how utterly strange and vivid his story was.
He began to write an autobiography. It read:

He never wore a watch. He pulled out of the driveway in his rusted, black pick-up…

Re: What's Your Big Twist?

My killer and MMC is out to get everybody who bullied him in school ten years ago. He works as a neurologist and as a result, is dating a female co-worker. While he is going to get somebody named Carly who bullied him all those years ago who turned out as a prostitute, he hears one of them yell "Go get 'em, Carly!" followed by his cheating girlfriend, dressed as a prostitute, walking up to his car. It turns out that her real name that she used at work and with my MMC was Emily, but some people outside of work called her Carly, as it was what she went by in school. And yes, he does end up killing her. Pretty messed up, eh?

The threatening notes (and the person behind them) had nothing to do with the murder. It was pure coincidence. This is not realized until the last paragraph when the MC arrives home and finds one a note for her saying it was not over.

After 32,000 words, my main character picks up a book and reads it for about 18,000 words ... Then there's a single paragraph revealing who the murderer is. Bet not many readers see that coming!
