Literary "psychological" thrillers

Can anybody name some great character-based literary thrillers, and why they worked or didn't work so well for you? I seem to be writing in this genre, but I'm spending a lot of time on my character development, less so on plot. I don't usually read books in the thriller/suspense genre because they're too plot heavy. Even a well regarded "literary" thriller like Briarpatch was all plot, it seemed, and I had no idea or cared who the narrator was. Apparently it's a bold thing to attempt a non-page turner psychological thriller.
