100 Sketches, 100 Days http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/forums/nano-artisans/threads/41042 ZoraSkywalker So, I was thinking the other day, after NaNo I'm probably going to need a creative outlet that isn't writing for at least a few days after November, and one of the first things that came to my mind was drawing. Now, I am not very good at drawing, but before NaNo I was enjoying spending a little bit of time trying to improve on it. The problem I keep running into, is the more of a perfectionist I am on a drawing, the less likely I am to ever finish a drawing. I can spend ages trying to make a teeny, tiny little section look the way I want it to. The problem with this is that I do more erasing than drawing, and while I'm now a master at erasing, my drawing still needs more work. I mean, I've improved on it a lot, but don't want to stop trying here. So, between that and the fact that I love NaNo style challenges, I've decided to try this challenge. Now, while I sort of came up with the idea myself (and entirely because of the NaNoing plot bunnies dancing madly in my head), I'm sure a Google search would prove that somewhere out there there's a site for this sort of challenge. But, I'm posting this here because I know that if anyone would be interested in joining me, it would be my group of lovably, crazy writers here. I currently don't have any hard and fast rules set out. I was thinking about taking whatever I draw on Day 1, I'll redraw on Day 100, to see if I've improved any. If you care to join me, you can draw whatever you want, be it anime/manga-style or realism, fanart or original. Heck, you can choose to do little paintings or oekaki or photoshop collages instead. I'm pretty flexible. Basically, if it's something you want to improve on, I say go for it. Also, if there's a day when you just can't draw, I'm cool with making two in a day or extending the challenge to day 101 or something, because come finals week, I know I'll probably need it. I don't have any set date for it at the moment. I mainly just want to see if there's interest. I was going to go ahead and start December 1, but then I realized I will probably be sound asleep all day, so that wouldn't work. Also, I haven't figured out where the best place to post everything would be. I thought about DA or creating a blog for it or something, but I'm open to suggestions. I'm not expecting to suddenly get drastically better at drawing, I'm mainly just wanting to get into the habit of drawing more regularly and not being such a perfectionist. I'm glad to see that more people are still interested in this! And I definitely like the prompt idea! I hadn't even thought of that. What I will probably wind up doing is coming up with 100 prompts and releasing them like ten at a time for those who want to use them and then make it optional, so if there's a day that you just can't come up with anything to draw, then you can go and try to use a prompt. They'll probably be pretty general, because there's so many things people can draw and some things just won't really work for a particular style. I like the idea of having a separate thread for adoptables and prompts, I just want to see how many people participate once the date arrives, because let's face it, dead boards are no fun. If by the end of the first week it looks like a decent number (I'm talking like ten not, NaNo numbers obviously XD) than I may go ahead and make us our own forums of some sort or another, if people are interested in that. I think for now, we can probably just post a link of where we're posting our work and check in here sometimes. If someone can't/doesn't want to scan their work in, than it will, of course, just be honor system and they can just say, "Oh, hey! I drew an oak tree today!" or whatever it is. I usually feel very lacking in the inspiration department and then stop drawing before I've even begun for lack of ideas, and the prompts definitely would help with the creative process that way. Not sure how viable this idea is, but it would be awesome if there was a place where everybody's work could be archived after the whole thing's over (or even on a day-to-day basis, if there's enough people, which it looks like there might be)--like a tumblr/photobucket/flickr (not sure which would be the best for this kind of thing), maybe. Mainly I'm putting each one up on dA as I do it, so the fact that everyone can see it makes me put more pressure on myself to maintain a minimum standard of quality...i.e. I can't cheat myself and do a crap sketch one day because then I either have to force myself to upload it to dA and cringe, or know that there will be a conspicuous GAP on that day. :-D At least I'm caught up until yesterday. You don't have to share if you don't want to. Right now there's no centralized way of sharing other than this thread. It's pretty much an honors system :-D However, if you do want to share, you could always create an account at deviantArt (I created one after I joined this), or put pictures up on tumblr, or photobucket, or wherever, really. I am doing this with a partner, and we came up with our own prompts (freakin' impossible ones, because we're evil and sadistic! =( ). I think everyone is pretty much sort of doing their own version of 100D2 according to their own skills and needs and time. =P This thread is actually pretty quiet, except for a couple of people who keep checking it. ...Aaaah, I ramble. I mean, of course, we could always have a thread, or blog, where people could just add to a huge list, but that would mean that people would have to scroll through the whole thing if it became huge. It would be awesome if we had one place for everybody to drop in prompts, sort of like a black box (or a real jar!), and then someone who wanted a prompt could just press a button and it'd spit one out. I know there are a million topic and idea generators out there, but it would be awesome if we could have our own. It would be an awesome feature to have if this ever became a separate site. ....I am toootally rambling here. Today is the first time I've actually sat down to do something since the first day. :( I just did a few graphics, adding text and changing the color scheme a bit. I think that this is going to be less of an improvement thing for me and more of a consistency. I'd definitely be interested in a Proboards group. It is at 100sketches.proboards.com It is very much in a beta mode. Please let me know, on NaNo or the proboards, what you would like to see on our proboards forums. For now, there is a general forum and a forum entitled "Personal Albums," in which you can make a thread for yourself and post your drawings on your thread. This was the best way I could think of to make it work; please tell me if you have a better thought! :) Hoping to see you all there!!!
