I'm a rebel because I finished half of my novel for Camp in August, have been sitting on it for a few months, re-reading, realizing what I don't like about it, but not adding anything. I want to edit the first half and finish the second by the end of the year, and this seemed like the greatest opportunity/motivator.

Oh, I should not reply to threads uncaffeinated.

I'm a rebel because I'm doing a previously started work as well. Plus it's fanfiction, which, while there IS a place for it here, makes me feel very silly. But it's personal for me (something else against the rules) so I'm going to finish it.

Re: THIS is why I am a rebel! Why are you?

I'm a rebel because I need to re-learn the skill of putting words on screen. My motivation, inspiration and self-confidence have been on steady decline for the past few months, to such extent that I can't even write a Facebook update without second-guessing myself. I know too well from the previous experience that Nano-drafts remain in the virtual drawers forever, and digging them out results in an outrage of embarrassment and guilt, which accumulates with each year of formally "winning" and not doing anything with the draft afterwards, because looking at it makes me want to scratch my eyes out.

Having stumbled upon a book on creative journaling, as well as upon a challenge of blogging every day for a month (NaBloPoMo), I've realized that blogging could be the first step of recovery. And so I'm here for a fresh new start.

Re: THIS is why I am a rebel! Why are you?

I'm a rebel because it -always- takes me longer than 50k to finish a novel and I've stopped being able to justify starting something new every November just to follow the rules to the letter. My NaNovels from 2006 and 2007 remain unfinished, 2008 only got finished because it was a christmas present so I carried on to DecNaNoWriMo on my own. 2009 would be unfinished if I hadn't been continuing it last year and this year by rebelling.. and I -hate- having unfinished projects. Also 2006 I'll probably not ever redo (my writing from those two years was so lousy I wouldn't continue - I'd have to scrap it) - 2007 was an excellent plot but I'd have to do a TON of research about Elizabethan living that I didn't do and completely redo it.

so.. I'm a rebel!

I'm a rebel like many others because I'm continuing a story already begun, with about ~9K of very rough material done. I haven't really touched it in well over a year, but it's calling me this year, despite being involved in editing something else, and I'm listening. As others have stated, the existing work won't count toward my 50,000. That count is about to start. And it's 12:03 - time to begin!

I'm a rebel because my muse wanted to start writing earlier...and after years of writing nothing, I didn't feel like ignoring her just to fit the rules. It's a good thing too, I got at least a third of the way into the story during October, and I can still probably pull out another 50k words for it in November.

Re: THIS is why I am a rebel! Why are you?

Why am I rebelling?

1) My co-writer husband has a great, well-developed idea that needs to be on paper.
2) He has a mental block with word generation, so despite previous efforts has not written this story.
3) I'm a pretty good writer but his idea rocks way harder than mine.
4) I tried but didn't make it last year. There were many reasons but one was that I hit an idea wall.

The answer to all those was to REBEL and co-write.

I'm a rebel because I'm writing a 'NaNo Collection' of my current projects. It's part brand new novel (Zero Degrees Kelvin), but I know I'm going to be far too stressed this year to do just one thing. The ADHD doesn't help. Part continued NaNo (I wrote 50,000 words of Contra Utopia in 2009, another heap last year doing this same sort of thing, and plan to keep it going to its conclusion). Part continued other project (Unsanctioned is a long fiction that I eventually aim to get turned into a comic, or at least illustrated). And finally, part whatever else fiction-wise that I decide to put into it.

That said, I have this story I've been writing for several years and I really want to finish it. I hope this will be the last year working on it!
I decided historical fiction is not my genre, but humor is. I thought the words would flow faster if I did my memoirs No one would read them, but that's ok - I crack myself up. Well, I wrote the excerpt yesterday - haven't written a word since!! Need to finish whatever I'm doing by 11/29, then I'm off to Europe.

I'm a rebel because this is the first book I've ever cared enough about to lay out individual scenes for, which I've found convenient even though it is a memoir. I do not currently have a craving to write fiction, so I'm celebrating the craving I have to write anything at all.

I'm also a rebel because I wished everyone in my memoir class a "Happy NanoWriMo" specifically so that I could tell the many who'd never heard of it what it was. Muha!

I'm a rebel because I've decided I can't do 50k words while teaching 4 classes and throwing a ridiculous Thanksgiving (feeding 10 people will be a challenge for me!). I've also decided that I want to work on short stories to edit in December and send out in January. I've decided 2012 will be a year of dedicated trying to get published and short stories are a great way to start. So 3 short stories of at least 20 pages in length is the goal. I'm only shooting for 15k words but it's plenty for me!

Re: THIS is why I am a rebel! Why are you?

My wife died in May. Every year except for the last one (she was sick last November), I typed but she was there reading my story and giving suggestions and encouragement. And heck, she was the one who mailed in a short story of mine that won this contest, just when I'd given up on the "getting published" notion as being so much moonshine.

If I've written anything, it was because of her. And I was all set to write a fiction about a tough gal on a space station riding a victorian bike. It was the kind of story she'd like. I'll still write it someday.

On November first, I had lunch with a friend who survived stomach cancer, although she lost 75% of her stomach in the process. She asked me what I was doing, and I told her.

She shook her head and said, "You have to write about her. For her. And for you." Funny how we don't mind cliched dialogue when it carries truth. When it's real.

So, here I am. Writing a non-fiction. Yet another story about a cancer victim, I know. Probably damn near impossible to pitch. But it's our story.

And it makes me a rebel.

She'd have liked that.

Hugs back at you, Tabitha. The son of a friend of ours was born preemie with a hole in his heart. They went through heck, and made some major life sacrifices. But you know, he's a bit pale, but other than that a typical bouncy four year old kid who unfortunately is well aware about just how cute he is.

You ain't been through nothing, as the saying goes. We're all doing the best we can with the thing we call the human condition.

Re: THIS is why I am a rebel! Why are you?

I'm a rebel because I'm writing a non-fiction psychological/analytical series of texts based on simple day to day events that I hope someday will coalesce into a story. Everyone keeps telling me to just keep writing, so I do. I write the things that come out of my head, and it seems like once those things are out, I have a lot more room to start thinking about how they all tie together. Or, possibly, what the real story is.

I'm under the firm belief that the story I'm writing is just waiting for me to step up and write it, and I think I have to find it first. It's not my job to create it... it's my job to tell it.

Really, it seems like I'm writing about the answer to the question of "Why?"

I'm a rebel because prose is occasionally painful to write, pushes a decent number of my anxiety buttons if I'm not careful and is daunting at the absolute least. Poetry, though? I've written poems. I've FINISHED poems. And I want to see if my poetry is decent enough to captivate others the way my favorite poets captivate me. Plus, a ton of my friends are doing NaNo and I want to play too! :D

Re: THIS is why I am a rebel! Why are you?

I've only ever completely outlined ONE novel in my life. Well, that's not strictly true. I've only completely outlined ONE that I plan on writing. The second one I outlined for two younger friends of mine to write together. Awesome set up, I get to plan a book and see it written without all the hard work, and they get to write a book without the hard work of plotting it up. =D But back to this novel I've outlined for myself... I wrote the first 3k to submit as my final project for a Creative Writing class a few months ago. Then, I let it gather dust until mid-October. Feeling pretty excited about the upcoming November, I decided to do some practicing. I brought my word count up by 24k in two weeks. Then October ended, and I found myself in an impossible dilemma. Either quite out on my novel which I was really into and excited about to write a bunch of unmotivated junk for Nano, or wait until next November and just keep working on my 27k novel. In the end, I decided I couldn't possibly put my novel down. I was right at the midpoint climax, what could I do? ;D But I figured I could still write 50k in a month. Finish this novel, and begin on book 2. I wasn't going to validate my word count or declare it as "official", and so I was a bit disappointed. Disappointed, but okay. I've never gotten more than 10k into a novel before, so I couldn't be THAT sad! ;D But anyway, yes! I was very glad to stumble upon all this Rebel business! =) I feel so much more welcome now. ;)

It's called A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words, and in it I will be designing covers for other wrimos, fifty covers, in fact.

I'm a rebel b/c I've already started my project and I want to see it finished. Actually its been in the works for over a year now but my Muse went to sleep at the tale end of last year due to pregnancy and delivery of my daughter. Thankfully about a month ago my Muse not only woke back up but she can out with a fiery vengence to write and to finish this book. So I'm going toe to toe with my characters and working hard to get the 1st draft done. Sadly with a young daughter at home and full time job I write normally during my lunch break, so doing 50k words in a month will be impossible, but every little bit helps.

Ultimately my goal is to finish the book by the end of the year.. wish me luck. :-)

I started off with every intention of not being a rebel but IRL circumstances caused me to have to rethink that on day 2. I had to more or less stop writing from the 4th of November through the 10th and that got me far behind and I decided to say the heck with it and start using some old notes I'd previously written for this idea. So far, I'm at 14,041 words thanks to using older writings and slugging away at writing fresh stuff. While I really would love to get 50K by the 30th, I'll settle for having this book in a somewhat sensible format by then so I can edit it and whip it into (hopefully) publishable shape.

It is a decent article, it reminds me of Edison's famous saying "Genius is 1% inspiration, and 99% perspiration." But I disagree that Facebook and Twitter are analogous to the Marshmallow experiment. In the marshmallow experiment, children can have one marshmallow now or two if they wait. It isn't that waiting itself is good, only that waiting is beneficial when you get more by waiting. If I use facebook at twitter (I don't use twitter) I'm getting instant communication, but the analogy fails because there isn't some delay by waiting.

I'm a rebel because it's the only way I'm going to get this done. For various medical reasons (medication mostly) I've lost a good chunk of my attention span, my memory is shot, and I have a really hard time expressing myself. Last year was the first year of dealing with that and the first year I ever lost. This year is more or less just to prove that I still have it in me. In 2008 I started my novel the night I got married! And I finished early! I rocked that thing! So it really hurts that I'm just not rocking it anymore. :/ I think this may be my last NaNoWriMo (or maybe I'll just take a year or two off) so I refuse to lose... even if I have to bend the rules a little.

1. Finish the first draft of my 2008 Nano novel
2. Structure a nonfiction book I've been thinking about for a few months
3. Compile notes for a future project, a memoir

So far, I've been able to keep up with all three plus, a short story snuck it's way in PLUS the makings of a murder mystery novel is also in development.

They're all words, they're all new words, so therefore, they count in my warped little world.

I am a rebel because:

- I started late (about mid - month)
- The horror 'novel' I started from scratch ended up plotless - guess it's a not - very - scary short story
- I want to keep writing until I generate 50,000 words
- I decided to write the fantasy I used to keep myself sane (?) driving in big - city traffic in the summer
- I already had 1600 words in unrelated scenes
- It's fan - fic - ish so I'm working it as a frame story
- Thus I'm leaving in my in-line notes

Readable? Probably not. Funny to me though, so, viva la revolucion!!!!!

I don't know about rebelling for NaNo officially, but I like the idea of rebelling for Camp NaNo. I'll have a lot of time on my hands (it's summer break, and I normally do nothing in June), so I think I can do 50k - and then some.
Mwuha. Rebellion time. So, what am I going to do?
1) Finish the novel I started now - I have 3130 words already, and I'm not dropping it to comply with silly rules.
2) Continue 2011's NaNo, which failed epically. No, I won't continue it, I will finish it.
3) Write whatever comes to mind.
4) Finish some projects - I have a backlog of three books and a musical, all either partially written or ready to write.

I'm starting the June camp session at midnight on May 1st. I want to try and get a 100K word draft but I know it ain't happening in a month for me. May is most likely gonna consist of the first part of my book and I'll hopefully wrap it up by June.

Re: THIS is why I am a rebel! Why are you?

Cool article. I was worried about the first part; to be honest, I have no self control. But I was happy to read this part:

<em>"Self-control was also an influential factor, but not as reliable a predictor of success as grit, and not a completely necessary factor. That is, there was a subset of kids who had poor self-control but a lot of grit, who still performed very well." </em>

I don't have a problem seeing things through to the end when I am passionate about them. Writing, unlike other things, is something I _never_ have trouble dedicating myself to.

As far as your original question, the answer is simple. I am a rebel because I have a story that I need to write. It just so happens that I wrote some of that story already. But this is something I _need_ to complete now, and so I will. Perhaps that's that grit they were talking about? :-)

Re: THIS is why I am a rebel! Why are you?

I'm a rebel because I'm using this year's NaNoWriMo to write a query a day, pitching my 2010 NaNo Novel. At the end of the month I should have sent at least 30 query letters to agents and publishers. I've assigned an arbitrary 300 words for each query to use in the word count.

Re: THIS is why I am a rebel! Why are you?

Because I'm actually trying to bring my word count *down*. Rather than start from scratch, I'm rewriting a very messy incomplete draft I'd been working on since last summer. My ideas and motivation ceded ground to another story (part 2 of a trilogy), but I got a second wind of ways to resolve my problems in the last week of October, so I put the other one on hold, and here we are. This month is rewriting to bring a rambling half-finished story of 50K words down to a snappy half-finished story of 35K in three weeks, followed by nine days of traditional NNWM plowing ahead.

I wish you well, I've had two preemies and that was scary to say the least but a born sleeping baby bean. I can't fathom the pain and suffering you must have gone through. Rebel away, her story will be an inspiration. YOUR experience will help others. You just inspired me beyond what words can express.

You are amazing!

I don't know if there's a way to "learn" to tell stories except by putting down words to say the things you need to say. :) If it becomes a story, wonderful! If it turns into something else, like a poem or a nonfiction memoir or a screenplay or even just ramblings on a page, that's wonderful too.

The important thing is to start, and then keep going until your heart and head are satisfied that you've said everything you need to say.

It takes just as much stamina to write a business non-fiction as it takes to write a novel. Only less imagination. I wrote one too ages ago. Anyway, we can't live on non-fiction-computer-translations from Japan. Those are impossible to understand. I pull my hat and bow to you.

When you're researching low-priced motherboards for the computer you're planning to build a family member for Christmas a month and a half before you need to. When you have to battle the urge to run to the farthest computer parts store you can think of, just so you can buy said motherboard for a dollar less than you can obtain it online. When you start reorganizing your desk, or world-building your personal hell.

That was me yesterday.
