Co-Writing - going well, but different than expected!

Well, so far we're still married even with co-writing NaNoWriMo! The weird thing is that we sort of had a plan on how we'd cowrite, and we threw that plan out pretty much on day 2. Now we are writing almost parallel efforts - the scenes are overlapping. I figure it's still words, and we'll smooth it out later. But it has resulted in weird things like a character dying in two different ways. In our outline, we had established he was going to die in battle. But I chose mace to the face and he chose stitched by arrows. I guess that is what revision is for!

Still, 15k words so far, and we're really progressing the plot. Last year, on our own, he had given up before making that count and I was more than half way through the month at this point.

What you and he are doing sounds extremely interesting. As though parallel universes are lapsing onto themselves. And as you said, you can pick and choose passages later.

I think its great you're doing a co-write. Its always something unique. That those involved may have never done on their own.

Thanks for the update on co-writing. Co-writing fascinates me, and it sounds like you are having some surprising outcomes, which is great. There is a quote about art that I like (that of course, I am having trouble remembering) but it goes something along the lines that art exists where there is a possibility for the unexpected to happen. I don't think it would be awful to end up with a novel that contains both parallel universes...or you can pick and choose.

My husband and I have never tried co-writing (and I don't think it would work well for us), but we are currently in the midst of writing separate pieces together. We've dubbed this weekend "Writing Weekend: Sweaters, Cider, Seclusion"

Well, we did it and if anything we are closer than ever. The novel is far from finished, so we have a lot more writing to do before calling it done, and then we need to start editing! As I expected, I contributed the bulk of the word count. But he was the main idea generator. It is funny how we dovetailed nicely into a single work.

My friend and I were sort of co-writing this November, except... not? We created some characters together earlier this year, and we plan on co-writing what's turning into a series of novels using them.

But since we each have characters that "belong" to each of us, it's easy enough for me to have taken my character to write about what was happening at the same time in a different place than what was happening to her character. Granted, we had some overlaps of where characters were in the same place at the same time, but that just required some communication between the two of us to make sure everything was playing out correctly.
